We listened to some Ed Sheeran on the way home, one of Sawyer’s favorites and a happy concession to the pop music both Santiago and I usually avoided. We weren’t ten minutes into the drive when Sawyer fell asleep, and given that he was now such a sound sleeper, I didn’t even try to wake him. We’d just carry him in when we got home. But when we pulled up to my driveway, home suddenly seemed so far away. Someone, apparently with a very heavy-duty vehicle, had rammed the gate to my house hard enough to bend it and pull the post to which it was chained halfway out of the ground. The sheer force of the hits revealed just how angry or determined this person was, and it was terrifying.
