Chapter 1: The Deal
Sophia’s POV I glanced at the time on my phone, my heart racing as the cafe's closing hour approached. My new apartment felt like a temporary shelter against the chill of late fall, a constant reminder of how precarious my life had become. For months, I had been running, always one step ahead of Marcus Cross—a name that sent chills through my bones. Tonight was different. I had arranged to meet a man who might be my last chance. I fiddled with the silver locket around my neck, a small comfort containing a picture of my baby. Soon, we would both be safe—if this meeting went as planned. I took a deep breath and pushed open the cafe door, the warm scent of coffee enveloping me. I scanned the nearly empty room, settling on a small table by the window. A moment later, a man in a suit and fedora slid into the chair across from me. His hat obscured much of his face, but his piercing eyes surveyed me like a hawk. “Ms. Blake,” he said, a sinister undertone in his voice. “I’m glad you could come.” I forced a smile, trying to mask my anxiety. “And you are?” “Mr. Thompson,” he replied. “I hear you’re looking to start over.” “Something like that,” I said, my stomach tightening. “I need a new identity—something to keep me safe from Marcus Cross.” Thompson’s eyes narrowed slightly. “That’s ambitious. Cross doesn’t let go easily. If you’re willing to negotiate, I can help.” I braced myself. “What’s the catch?” He leaned in, lowering his voice. “I need you to retrieve a document for me. Once you do, I’ll arrange everything you need.” Retrieve a document? My pulse raced. “What kind of document?” “A private one,” he said with a half-smile. “You’ll find out once you accept.” Before I could respond, the cafe door swung open, and my heart sank. Marcus strode in, his eyes locking onto me, a predator finding its prey. “Sophia,” he said, a malicious grin spreading across his face. “I didn’t expect to find you here.” Thompson’s demeanor shifted, his eyes flashing with alarm. “We should leave,” he said, rising abruptly. Marcus’s gaze followed Thompson. “You have no idea what you’re getting into,” he said, his voice a low growl. I struggled to maintain my composure. “I’m not here to cause trouble. I just need some space.” Marcus laughed, a sound devoid of humor. “You think you can just walk away? Not when you’re surrounded by potential complications.” Suddenly, the cafe lights flickered ominously, plunging us into darkness before emergency lights cast a ghostly glow. Panic surged through me as I sensed the danger escalating. “This place gives me the creeps,” Marcus muttered, grabbing my arm and pulling me toward the back exit. “Let me go!” I protested, but he only tightened his grip. “No,” he said coldly. “We need to talk.” He dragged me into a shadowy alley, my heart racing. I looked for an escape, but his presence felt suffocating. “You’ve been a thorn in my side for too long,” he said, voice dripping with menace. “And now you’re under unwelcome observation. I’m here to clean up your mess.” Just then, Thompson re emerged from the darkness, his expression unreadable. “Marcus, let her go.” Marcus glared at him, releasing me but still radiating hostility. “You think you can protect her? This isn’t over.” Thompson remained unfazed. “It goes beyond her. You’ve crossed lines that complicate everything.” Tension crackled in the air. Marcus turned his gaze back to me, his voice low. “I will find you. You can’t hide forever.” With that, he disappeared into the night, leaving me breathless and shivering. Thompson moved closer, his eyes assessing me with a mix of concern and calculation. “You’re lucky I arrived when I did,” he said. “But this isn’t over. You still need to retrieve that document.” “I’m not sure I can do this,” I replied, my voice trembling. “Everything is falling apart.” “You have no choice,” Thompson insisted. “If you want to keep your child safe, you have to act.” I nodded, feeling the weight of uncertainty pressing down on me. As Thompson walked away, I realized my life had become infinitely more dangerous. Reality crashed over me like a tidal wave. I was ensnared in a web of deception with no clear way out. All I could do was hope that whatever came next would be enough to protect my child and secure a future for us both. Taking a deep breath, I steeled myself for the challenges ahead. Safety was a treacherous path I had to navigate, each step a gamble with stakes higher than I had ever faced.
