June Morrison once believed the saying that ‘love could conquer all evil,’ and that was what made her fall in love with Stephen Norman Knight- a reserved, guarded, and mysterious soul who is shackled by the shadows of his family's secrets and legacy.
After a brief romance and an affair, June discovers she is pregnant and tells Stephen to run away together where his family's past would never be able to follow, but her messages get intercepted, and June is confronted and threatened by Stephen's family, who want her to get rid of the pregnancy.
Ten years later, June has built for herself a humble and quiet life as a college professor in literature and has succeeded in raising her son Adam- who is the center of her universe. But despite her effort to shield him from her past, his reality, and the truth about his father, June's worst nightmares come flooding in, threatening to not only take away her son but destroy every good thing she has, including her peaceful life.
Stephen Knight never meant to fall in love. Burdened by a family curse and dangerous feuds, he always believed that love wasn't made for someone like himself. But meeting June Anne Morrison changed everything.
Although he never reciprocated the idea of wanting to keep the child; when he learned that June after all did keep the baby and that his son was in danger, he stood as a rock for his newly recovered family and did everything to protect them at all costs while struggling to not fall for June all over again.

Despite his aloofness, Stephen is charmed by June’s bravery and stubbornness. They bond over late-night talks and share weaknesses and this leads to a surprising romance.
