Chapter 5 - First Awakening

1035 Words
The hallway slowly returned to normal. The tension that had settled after the beating faded as students began to move again, their conversations picking up in low voices. Some of them cast glances at Kai, uncertain, curious, or simply cautious, but no one stepped forward. No one said anything. Kai didn’t pay attention to them. He stood still for a moment, steadying himself as the last traces of pain settled into a dull ache across his body. His breathing had evened out, and the dizziness that had clouded his senses earlier was gone. But something else had taken its place. A strange awareness lingered at the edge of his perception, subtle but constant. It wasn’t something he could see or touch, but he could feel it, like a presence that hadn’t existed before. The system. Even though the screen had disappeared, the memory of it remained clear in his mind. Every word, every message, every error—it hadn’t been an illusion. It was real. Kai flexed his fingers slightly, testing his body. The movement felt normal, but there was a faint difference, something beneath the surface that he couldn’t fully explain. He took a step forward. Then another. The pain was still there, but it didn’t slow him down the way it should have. His body responded more smoothly than expected, as if something inside him had adjusted during the process. That alone was enough to confirm it. Something had changed. Kai walked down the hallway, ignoring the eyes that followed him. No one blocked his path this time. No one called out to him. The earlier confrontation had left its mark. Not just on him. On them too. By the time he reached the exit, the academy grounds were quieter. Most students had already left, leaving behind only a few scattered groups. Kai stepped outside, the cool air brushing against his face. He paused for a moment, then focused inward. The system had disappeared from sight, but he could still feel it. If it was real, then it should respond. “…Show me.” His voice was low, almost a whisper. For a second, nothing happened. Then— A faint flicker appeared in front of him. The air distorted slightly, and the same translucent screen from before formed again, more stable this time. Kai’s eyes narrowed as he focused on it. The interface was simple, but unlike anything he had seen before. The edges of the screen glitched faintly, lines shifting and correcting themselves as if the system was constantly trying to stabilize. Text began to appear. [Host: Kai Draven] [Rank: Level 0] [Status: Active] Kai stared at the words. So it acknowledged it. Level 0. The same result from the awakening. His gaze shifted slightly as more information appeared beneath it. [Condition: Stabilized] [Energy Level: Minimal] Minimal. That made sense. He had just barely survived. Another line flickered into existence. [Abilities: None] Kai frowned slightly. None? Then what exactly had changed? The question didn’t stay unanswered for long. The screen glitched. The text distorted briefly before rearranging itself. A new section appeared. [Error Detected] [Unauthorized Function Attempting Activation] Kai’s expression sharpened. The words pulsed faintly, as if the system itself was uncertain. Then, without warning, the message shifted. [Override Accepted] A sharp sensation ran through his body. Not pain. Not exactly. But something close. It started in his chest and spread outward, like a sudden surge of energy forcing its way through him. His muscles tensed, his breath catching for a brief moment as the feeling intensified. The screen updated. [New Ability Acquired] Kai’s eyes locked onto the words. A second line appeared beneath it. [Passive Skill: Adaptation] The moment the words settled, the sensation inside him changed again. The ache from earlier—the bruises, the strain, the lingering damage from Rex’s attack—began to shift. It didn’t disappear. But it eased. Gradually. His breathing steadied further, the tightness in his chest loosening as his body adjusted at a pace that wasn’t natural. Kai remained still, focusing on the change. The system wasn’t just giving him something. It was altering him. Improving him. Even if only slightly. The screen flickered once more. [Adaptation: Active] [Effect: Gradual Physical Adjustment Based on External Stress] Kai read it carefully. Gradual adjustment. Based on stress. His mind moved quickly, connecting the meaning. The more pressure his body went through, the more it would adjust. The more it would change. His gaze hardened slightly. That explained the earlier shift. The beating. The damage. The system had responded to it. Instead of leaving him broken, it had forced his body to adapt. A slow exhale left him. “…So that’s how it works.” It wasn’t a normal ability. It wasn’t something flashy or overwhelming. But it was enough. Enough to start. The screen remained in front of him, faint but stable now, as if it had finally found a form it could maintain. Kai raised his hand slightly, watching as the interface reacted to his movement. It responded to him. Directly. That alone set it apart from everything he had seen before. Most systems were structured, limited, predictable. This one wasn’t. It changed. It adjusted. It broke its own rules. Kai lowered his hand, his thoughts settling into something clearer. If the system grew stronger through pressure, then staying still wasn’t an option. He would have to move. Act. Push himself. A faint memory surfaced. Rex. The impact of his fists. The way he had been completely overpowered. Kai’s fingers tightened slightly. That gap still existed. Nothing had changed there. Not yet. But now— There was a way to close it. Kai took a step forward, the ground feeling more solid beneath him than before. The system flickered once more, then slowly faded from view. But he knew it was still there. Waiting. Watching. Ready to respond. Kai walked away from the academy, his pace steady. The pain hadn’t vanished completely. His rank hadn’t changed. His situation wasn’t better. But something had started. Something small. Something unstable. Something dangerous. And for the first time since everything began, Kai understood one thing clearly. He wasn’t stuck at Level Zero. He was starting from it. 🔥
