Chaoter 4 - System Error

1027 Words
Darkness lingered longer than it should have. Kai wasn’t sure how much time had passed. Seconds, minutes, maybe longer. There was no sense of direction, no sound, no weight. Just an empty void that pressed in from all sides. Then came the pain. It returned suddenly, sharp and overwhelming, dragging him back into awareness. His chest tightened as air forced its way back into his lungs. A rough breath escaped him, followed by another. His body felt heavy, unresponsive, like it didn’t fully belong to him yet. The ground beneath him was cold. Rough. Real. Kai’s fingers twitched against the floor, scraping faintly against the surface as he struggled to move. His vision was still blurred, shapes forming and dissolving in uneven waves. Slowly, the world began to come back. The hallway. The ceiling lights. Shadows stretching across the floor. He was still at the academy. A low murmur of voices reached him, distant at first, then clearer. “…is he still breathing?” “I think so.” “Someone should call—” “Why bother? He’ll be fine.” The voices overlapped, some uncertain, others completely indifferent. Kai tried to push himself up. His arms shook under the effort, barely holding his weight before giving in. He dropped back down, a sharp ache spreading through his ribs. His breathing grew uneven again. The pain was worse than before. Not just from the beating. Something else. Something deeper. A strange sensation spread through his body, like heat building under his skin. It started faint, almost unnoticeable, then slowly grew stronger. Kai’s eyes narrowed slightly. He could feel it moving. Not randomly. Deliberately. His heartbeat picked up. The sound of it echoed in his ears, steady at first, then faster. Thump. Thump. Thump. The heat intensified. It crawled through his veins, spreading outward, reaching every part of him. His muscles tensed involuntarily, his fingers digging into the ground. “What’s wrong with him?” “His body… it’s shaking.” Kai heard them, but their voices felt distant again. The sensation inside him grew sharper. Unstable. Like something was trying to force its way through. His vision flickered. For a brief moment, everything around him distorted. Then— A sound. Faint. Mechanical. “…ERROR…” Kai’s breath caught. The voice didn’t come from outside. It came from within. “…SYSTEM… ERROR…” His eyes widened slightly. The world around him froze. The hallway, the people, the light—everything seemed to pause, like time itself had stalled. In front of him, something appeared. A faint glow. Distorted. Unstable. Like a screen struggling to load. Kai stared at it, his thoughts momentarily blank. The glow flickered again, lines forming and breaking apart before finally stabilizing into something clearer. Words. “…SYSTEM INITIALIZATION FAILED…” The message glitched, the text warping slightly before correcting itself. Kai’s breathing slowed, not out of calm, but because he didn’t understand what he was seeing. “…REATTEMPTING CONNECTION…” The glow intensified. More lines appeared. More errors. “…HOST STATUS: IRREGULAR…” “…RANK CLASSIFICATION: UNKNOWN…” “…ATTEMPTING OVERRIDE…” Kai’s fingers tightened against the ground. This wasn’t normal. None of this was supposed to happen. The system everyone else received was stable. Clean. Predictable. This— This was breaking apart in front of him. “…ERROR DETECTED…” “…ERROR DETECTED…” The messages overlapped now, repeating rapidly as the glow flickered violently. Kai felt the heat inside his body spike. A sharp pain shot through his chest, forcing a strained breath out of him. It felt like something was being forced into place. Or torn apart. He couldn’t tell which. “…FORCING INITIALIZATION…” The moment the words appeared, the pain intensified. Kai’s body arched slightly against the floor, his teeth clenching as he struggled to endure it. His vision blurred again, the edges darkening. The voices around him were gone now. Completely gone. There was only the system. Only the noise. Only the feeling of something changing. “…SYSTEM… CONNECTED…” Everything went still. The pain didn’t disappear. But it shifted. Settled into something deeper. Something heavier. The glowing screen in front of him flickered one last time before stabilizing. Clear. Sharp. Unmistakable. A new line appeared. [Welcome, Host.] Kai’s breathing slowed. His eyes fixed on the words. For a moment, he didn’t move. Didn’t think. Then another line appeared beneath it. [Broken Ascension System Activated.] The words lingered. Heavy. Unreal. Kai’s fingers curled slightly as he pushed himself up, ignoring the dull ache spreading through his body. This time, his arms held. Barely. But they held. The hallway came back into focus. The students. The lights. Everything was moving again. But something was different. The screen didn’t disappear. It remained in front of him, faint but visible. No one else reacted to it. No one else saw it. Kai’s gaze hardened slightly. So this… was his system. Not normal. Not stable. Broken. Another line appeared. [Host Condition: Critical] [Initiating Emergency Adaptation] Kai felt the heat inside him shift again, spreading outward in a controlled wave this time. The pain didn’t vanish. But it became manageable. His breathing steadied. His vision cleared completely. Slowly, he pushed himself to his feet. The hallway fell silent. Not because of the system. Because of him. Some of the students stared. Others looked away quickly. No one spoke. Kai stood still for a moment, his balance slightly off, but stable enough. The screen flickered again. One final message appeared. [Survive.] Then— It disappeared. Like it had never been there. Kai remained where he was, his chest rising and falling steadily. The pain was still there. The memories were still fresh. Rex. The beating. The laughter. None of that had changed. But something else had. Something deeper. Kai lifted his head slightly, his eyes no longer as dull as before. There was something new behind them. Something sharper. More focused. He didn’t say anything. Didn’t react. But as he took a step forward, the weight in his movement felt different. Not lighter. Not stronger. Just… different. And for the first time since the awakening— Kai didn’t feel like nothing anymore. 🔥
