Chapter One
Rory Rory Vanderbuilt slid her fingers down the neck of the guitar, strumming electric notes into the air. The crowd jumped along with her as she confronted them with the raging song of their species' oppression. The set ended abruptly as she threw down the instrument and stormed offstage. A strong scent had overwhelmed her with nausea and familiarity. It was almost alcoholic. Definitely hints of vanilla....but what else? As suddenly as it had appeared it was gone, and she hadn't been able to identify from who it came. She slipped out the back door, eager to continue her search for whoever had caused her intuition to pique. Hopefully her parents wouldn't notice her disappearance from the event. As prominent Council members they tended to be strict and aloof. Promptly slamming into another body as she rounded the corner, she had them pinned to the wall before she could fully think. She had located their arm and had them twisted face first into the wall with their hand behind their back before she even saw their face. Lexie Lexie Binks stomped on her attacker's foot with her combat boot smashing through their shoe to their toes. The second their grasp loosened she swung her fist around, narrowly avoiding a beautiful green eye. The eye glared at her. The mouth howled as the girl grabbed her foot and winced in pain. “ Screw you! Why always the toes?!” Rory wailed accusingly. “Babe, stop wearing skater shoes. You can't be a bad ass in skater shoes.” Lexie laughed. Lexie stopped to examine her 5'5 green eyed monster girlfriend. Her hair was knotted up into a messy bun dyed to resemble a burning sunset her two thin throwing spikes holding it all together. She was wearing a worn out band shirt, ripped baggy black cargo pants, a studded belt, those treacherous shoes, and a asymmetrical form fitting black leather jacket. Her tiny septum ring connected with a rose gold chain to piercings fitted to each nostril. Rory stood up, tucked some stray strands behind her ear, and kissed Lexie's cheek- “Happy Birthday!” Teasingly, Lexie pulled the knives from Rory”s hair and watched it cascade down. “Thank you, should we go back in and get cake to go with our drinks?” She opened her caramel colored biker's jacket to reveal a bottle of spiced rum. “Yes! I can play some more sweet, sweet rock and roll for these lame wolves. Since everyone in here needs a musical liberation from- ” Eyes practically rolling out of her head in exasperation, Lexie cut her off with a kiss. “Yes, you're so cool with your musical prowess, blah blah blah. You're just lucky your wonderful partner got you such a thoughtful gift as your own little rock show.” Rory felt the peace and pure joy in her soul as she inhaled the delicious vanilla whipped cream and chai tea smell that was emanating from her lover. She felt so enveloped in happiness and the promise of the future. Lexie was wearing ripped black skinny jeans that curved extravagantly to her figure the 'leg's for days' idiom worked for her. Rory was frequently jealous...but then again, she got to enjoy those leg's as well, she smirked. She had her caramel leather jacket zipped up half way. Under her jacket was a plain v neck. On her feet of course were her predictable combat boots. Because ass kicking opportunities need not be avoided with the proper footwear. Her long red hair draped around her shoulders. Grey eyes twinkled under the building lights. Lexie's birthday was in a month, Rory would wait to let her experience the mate connection on her own. They still had their families and the Royal Werewolf Army to deal with. Rory was still befriending her wolf and learning all of the intricacies of that special bond. She had heard that little sweet familiar voice in her head first thing when she woke. Meeting the Wolf “Hello, Rory! I'm so pleased to meet you finally! My name is Arlo,” she crooned.“Oh, Lexie is so beautiful. Our mate! Oh, I love her. We must go see her. I need kisses! Let's go! Are you ready to see us become one my lovely Rory? I promise I will talk you through the whole transformation. It will hurt this time, but we are very strong!” Rory felt her body start to shiver, she felt hot and cold, pins and needles, breaking bones, spasms, ripping...the pain grew and grew until the world in front of her burst into a million stars in front of her eyes. She felt wonderfully numb for a few seconds, and then it was as if she was born again. The world was crisp, with details she had never seen, and colors she could have never imagined. There was a whole existence she had been unaware of. Almost another dimension in front of her, but made up of smells and sounds she could never register before. There in front of her was a delicious aroma...faint...a trail that Arlo was determined to follow. Together they ran, frolicked, rolled and chased this playful mouthwatering scent. The trail lead her right to Lexie's door. She took a deep breath to satisfy Arlo, but then chided her gently. “Arlo, I want to wait until Lexie's birthday. I want her to feel all of this, and just make it so beautiful and romantic when we both know that we're mates. I want to be there when she meets her wolf, and hold her while she transforms for the first time. I don't want to tell her yet. We have to go home.” “Fine. If we must.” Arlo whimpered pathetically. “But we're going to make sweep her off her feet. And I get extra kisses.” Rory agreed and they turned towards the woods for a run. After thinking about Lexie for so long it was go for a long run, or take a long cold shower. The run sounded a lot more fun. Garrett Garrett braced himself against the sink, staring himself down in the mirror. His steel colored eyes were defined by deep circles of exhaustion and stress. His six ft 2 broad frame was sagged in on itself as he splashed cold water on his face. His hair was a dark auburn, pure deep red in some lighting. It was shaggy and in desperate need of cut. The shower he had taken had barely removed the grime he felt after being out all night. He had started a pub crawl at the pack's local lodge, and moved through a few different establishments on his search for some inner peace. He had briefly listened to some music at one, but the anger in the songs had just riled him up. He left before finishing his drink. He was almost 18. It was time. He had been planning for so long- revenge against the pack that had murdered his family and torn apart his own pack. He had only known for a few years, that he wasn't the biological son of the Alpha and Luna Hazel. It made him sick how they had just acted as if he were thei r own. His brother's were pure Hazel blood, and one was soon to be crowned the new Alpha. He held no ill will towards them, they were good men. In fact, he was finding it hard to find blame for his mother and father-but no, they weren't really. They were murderers. He would move forward as planned and let the hatred continue to fester in his heart. His plans were well thought out, he had been training for a year. The only complication he could foresee were the other associated events of his eighteenth birthday. Meeting his inner wolf, and the mate. He had never been in a relationship or been with a woman- around the age those things would've began to interest him is when he had found out the truth of his past. He had been so heartbroken...that had sat with him and tainted his daily life, eventually growing into a weight he couldn't hardly bear. So he had formed his plan, and vowed to never mate. Nothing could be more important than his obsessive revenge, and no one deserved the leftovers of his heart and mind at the end of the day. However, he pondered, there had always been this gnawing sensation of loss. Like a chunk of him was missing. He didn't necessarily lable it as missing his mate or as a s****l unfulfillment, it was just a certain sadnesswas always there. It left him feeling more empty than anything else. He swallowed the somberfeelings down and wiped the emotions from his face. Steely reserve stared him back in the mirror. He plastered on a fake smile and prepared to join his 'family' downstairs for breakfast.
