Zenobia's family
That first night of marriage was not what she had expected. Her mother had tried to explain 'love' to her. "Dear Zenobia, you will feel pain but it is only for a little bit" she said as tears of regret filled and spilled from her eyes. Her mother was not usually this emotional but on that fateful day she definitely was.
Her explanation was not convincing and definitely not comforting.
This was supposed to be a union between a man and a woman. Naturally she has had some ideas about what happens between males and females in the game of procreation and other happenings. Definitely not enough was spoken of such things especially were it came to making babies.
Some ideas was just so preposterous and grouse she just assumed it was all a big exaggeration. There was a conversation she had overheard from the servants, now she shivered from fear as tonight would be a understatement as her total sum of thoughts were not accurate information at all.
The only problem was as her mother started to explain she had felt nauseous just imagining what would happen on the wedding night. Can it be true, does men really do what she says. Zenobia's innocent revulsion was her prize Her mother knew her daughter was untouched and clean in spirit. There was no doubt that her mother did not have a happy union with her father... She scared Zenobia with stories of the male anatomy and other unmentionables.
Her mother was naturally squeamish about speaking openly about the roles of males and females. It was either that or her mother had definitely not been ready to tell her the real truth.
Even if the coming together part was a crazy notion as she was quite sure this was probably a joke or possibly something to frighten her into doing what was expected of her. She was sure she would be able to dodge the issue when she was eventually married.
What was her husband to be like, most definitely one of the most pressing issues was did he have the right political influence to change the kingdom from the darkness it has descended into...
He was handsome as a dark lord probably was. That first glimpse of him had her wanting to see him in person and not as the slinky market vendor person she had portrayed herself as.
He had stopped at the village before he came to her village, she had pretended to be a vendor. At the market she would sell things she had made.
Being a princess has had many perks but as a lonely young woman she was denied adventure and the notion of love.
She just had to know what her husband would look like. She had heard he was as fierce as a dragon. This was scary but intriguing as well.
In the market she impersonated a vendor operator, she sold her future husband a delicious pastry that she had made herself.
Her stand on the market was her secret alter ego life. She was a ordinary person for a day every month. She baked the sweets and pastries herself. The money she made was held in a scarf she hid.
This was then to be the night of the marriage. As their nuptials was declared that very afternoon when the Prince was to meet her father.
Zenobia was curious about her future life. She wanted her mother to explain everything about men and maybe her future as well. "Mother, can you explain men...?" she had asked cautiously. She knew her mother would be flustered with her questions. How else was she going to find the truth as she had been part of the woman only side of the castle most of her life.
The day he came to the castle to speak to her father she wanted to see him. "Mother would I get to meet him first before we marry? I am curious about his personality... do I have a choice" she said with exasperation as if she did not know the truth. Realistically she had as much a chance of escaping these walls as a slave did.
After all this was her life they were speaking about. Nobody told her were she would be going. She tried asking her father if she and her husband would leave or would they stay in the kingdom.
As she leaned over the false gate that was actually a wall she was able to catch a glimpse of her future husband.
He had a aquiline masculinity that intrigued her. She should have known better than to sneak a peek at him as her heart raced at a fast pace.
What would her father say if he catches her. Zenobia was sheltered as her parents was rarely seen together but having grown up believing woman should be safely tucked away had been her life till now.
Her father was the one who summoned her to the castle foyer. This was her chance to ask as many questions as she could. The castle was made from the shells of giant sea shells. This gave the walls a beautiful tranceluce of gem like quality.
The future was scary and unknown to her, she was afraid of what would happen to her and the kingdom.
As a only child she was supposed to become the next ruler of her country but the wars plus the famine was sucking the very life out of the country.
This gave other Kingdoms the opportunity to dictate their terms of just about anything where negotiations was concerned.
She has tried talking to her father as she tried to get him to stop the ruthless behavior to stop. Needless to say her father did not listen instead...
Her family was held at ransom by the monster who was now her husband. Naturally he was not really a monster, she just saw him as one. The kingdom was in a serious situation with a failing economy as drought was ravaging the land.
Zenobia's father was a formidable warrior, he had been fighting a war on the eastern front with Terris. That kingdom was a small one yet they fought fiercely for more territory. The silly wars was nonstop, that included the bickering over territory. She wanted her father to stop listening to the grandfizieur.
Zenobia knew her father could be humanized. "Father can I speak to you in private...?" She asks expecting her father to Bello angry retorts at her. She was surprised when he stepped off the throne, he led her to a private wash room.
"My dear daughter, you know we are in dire danger right now. Yes you know our family cannot sustain the kingdom any longer. You have to do what the prince wants from you." father said with a fearful look on his face.
I did not know if I could trust him or not. "Father, I will do what I can but I don't know what are you going to do about our kingdom?
