Blurb

An icy unfamiliarity crept up Scarlett's spine, its assault on her senses propelling her into action. Bursting through the door in a sudden rush, she hoped the element of surprise might provide an advantage. Swiftly confronting the intruder became imperative; she desired this night to reach its end.The room before her appeared empty at first glance, bathed in the faint glow of the solitary bulb swinging lazily from the ceiling. Scarlett's keen senses, however, detected a presence, an otherworldly energy lingering in the air. She scanned the corners, her eyes adjusting to the dim light, seeking any sign of the intruder."Who's there?" Her voice reverberated, tinged with a mix of authority and caution.A shadow shifted near the far corner, drawing her attention. The figure emerged slowly, a silhouette taking form amidst the darkness. It was unlike any werewolf she had encountered—a peculiar aura enveloped the entity. The room seemed to shrink around them, the air growing dense and suffocating.

Chapter 1 The early summer breeze caressed the leaves, coaxing a gentle dance from the trees. A handful of birds took flight, their wings cutting through the air in graceful arcs. She traced their fleeting path with her gaze until they vanished into the sky's expanse. The serenade of their chirping had always been a comforting companion during her hours of work. Leaning against the window frame, Scarlett released a sigh before retreating to her chair. A sense of weight tugged at her, a burden she couldn't easily shake off. "What's up with you today?" Zayn queried between mouthfuls, his demeanor radiating positivity, a stark contrast to her own. "I don't know. I'm feeling a bit stressed," Scarlett confessed, shaking her head in an attempt to dispel the mental fog. The task before her felt daunting. The decision on whether to greenlight a new hypermarket for the town was proving far more arduous than anticipated. The piles of paperwork and endless discussions were overwhelming. And the prospect of it being managed by humans felt like inviting more chaos into an already intricate web of dynamics. Pushing aside her intrusive thoughts, she directed her attention to her steadfast Beta. Despite his repeated disregard for her instructions, she found a sense of camaraderie with him. "I've told you countless times, no food in my office!" Stretching leisurely on the couch, he nonchalantly shrugged, strands of blond hair shimmering in the sunlight that streamed through the window. Scarlett was his Alpha, yet he never displayed the usual deference or fear. Zayn, Cloudranch's notorious Beta, often evoked suspicion and prejudice from other Alphas. He was a wildcard in their world. "I brought lunch and thought I'd join you. But if you prefer solitude..." He picked up the packaged food, feigning departure, though a mischievous glint betrayed his intentions. How typical of him to play this game. "You know that's not what I meant." Scarlett sighed, crossing her arms in a gesture of mild exasperation. "What?" He feigned innocence, but an imminent smirk lurked at the corners of his lips, a telltale sign of his mischief. Typical Zayn. Despite his antics, she considered him her equal, her closest friend for the past two decades, a bond formed since their earliest days on Earth. "Get back here," she commanded, rolling her eyes playfully. It was time for a bit of payback. "I wonder what my parents would've said if they were here..." She pretended to peruse a folder on her desk, feigning interest. "Terrifying thought..." Zayn drawled, widening his eyes in mock horror. "But they're not, right?" He bounced back onto the sofa, a mischievous grin adorning his face. "When did you become so brave?" Scarlett raised an eyebrow, chuckling softly. "Or should I say shameless? If only you had that bravery when my dad was around..." "Oh, spare me! I'm eating here!" Zayn grimaced, diving into his meal. "Perhaps I should give him a call. It's been ages since I heard from my parents anyway." She settled into her chair, eyeing the phone on her desk. It had been too long since she last spoke to them. Zayn shook his head, accidentally spewing bits of food as he spoke. "Don't disturb your parents while they're on vacation! If you're bored, why don't we scout the land for the hypermarket? Just to ensure it doesn't encroach upon our hunting grounds." "Please mind your manners." Scarlett tossed him a box of napkins from her desk. Zayn effortlessly caught them and delved back into his burger. "You were supposed to handle this alone," she chided, though Zayn simply shrugged, a mess of red sauce adorning his lips and cheeks, nearly prompting a chuckle from Scarlett. Feeling stifled within the confines of her office, Scarlett rose from her chair, craving fresh air. Zayn's presence always brought a touch of levity to her moments of tension. "So, is this one mine?" She pointed at the second burger on the table, and Zayn nodded vigorously. "Yes, I grabbed it think-" "No talking, please!" Scarlett interrupted, gesturing to halt any further explanation, reaching for the food. "I should capture this moment—Dad would get a kick out of it!" she teased, her hand hovering over her jeans' pocket where her phone was tucked away. Zayn's eyes widened, prompting him to hastily use napkins to wipe the food smudges from his face. Scarlett snorted and made her way to the door. Zayn, the lovable fool, felt like a brother, a comforting presence amidst her lingering loneliness. Ever since her parents entrusted her with leading the pack, she often grappled with a sense of solitude. This period of testing her leadership skills felt overwhelming, with unforeseen challenges emerging constantly. The pack members sought promotions in rank, aid with their family businesses, and assistance in maintaining a low profile in the human world, especially during their initial transformations as adolescents—an excruciatingly painful and vulnerable time. Her mind had been in disarray for the past couple of weeks, a persistent feeling gnawing at her gut, warning her of an impending event. Scarlett had never been one to believe in mystical abilities among werewolves beyond their inherent traits of shifting, heightened senses, and swift healing. However, she began to question if some latent ability resided within her. A heavy weight pressed upon her chest, an insistent presence that permeated every moment. Was she losing her mind, or was this an omen of her personal upheaval? There seemed no other plausible explanation. She was an adult now; her parents' temporary withdrawal from leadership shouldn't have affected her so profoundly. The responsibility seemed daunting, the burden of overseeing a pack's well-being and navigating their interactions with the human world weighed heavily on her shoulders. The impending decision about the hypermarket was just a fraction of the challenges she faced. The potential for chaos loomed with the human presence, threatening the secrecy and stability of their existence. Scarlett's pace quickened as she exited the office, Zayn trailing behind. The town awaited, as did the looming decisions that could dictate the fate of the pack. Yet, an inexplicable sense of foreboding lingered, casting an uncertain shadow over her thoughts
