Inheritance.
I never saw myself indulging in any of my parents line of work.
I don’t really have great plans for the future but I see myself writing books, owning libraries here and there, that’s it.
So you can imagine my horror when my mother mentioned it to Andrew and I during breakfast at the dining.
My father wasn’t in the country presently so it was just us three eating.
‘How about you guys visit the company one of these days’ she had said.
‘For what mother, father isn’t even around or anything’ Andrew had replied.
I just sat there munching on my sandwich in silence
‘Well you both will be running the companies one day, why not try to learn about the company before you burn our legacy before it even begins’ she said.
‘We’ve talked about this mother, you’re not about to put the pressure of holding a legacy on me at 17, you might not realize it but I’ve not even graduated high school and I haven’t been allowed to explore my youth’ he retaliated.
‘You’ll be 18 in a few months, Echo will be 18 in a year and so, we’ll soon start getting suitors wanting to form alliances, should your future fiancé come into your life and runs our family company because you wanted to explore your youth aka f**k girls here and there and spend money you’ve never worked for a day in your life’ she spat.
‘Hell if you think I’m getting a fiancé at 18, you might get to choose who I’ll marry but you’re not bounding to some rich brat at 18’
‘You’d better watch your language if you want to keep that credit card , cars and your little w****s’
‘You guys will pick a date convenient and go to your father’s company, survey through and start inputting yourselves in the different areas there, now finish your breakfast and head to school’ she continued.
He slammed his hands on the table getting up, taking his jacket and leaving.
As I was about getting up… ‘Echo’ she called.
‘Yes mother’
‘How’s it going with your therapist, he told me he noticed some signs of self harm’
I’m sure he didn’t tell her s**t, I hadn’t seen him in over a month.
I stared at her with narrowed eyes.
‘You know if there’s anything you want to share, anything at all, I’m here right?’ She continued after I didn’t reply.
‘Why would I want to share anything with you’ I finally said.
‘Because I’m your mother and no matter what and how bad you think it is, I’ll always forgive you’ she replied.
‘I didn’t kill him mother’ I said.
She was stunned for a while.
‘I didn’t say you did , I just -‘
I took my jacket and started leaving….
‘Echo-‘ I walked away.
To be honest I don’t think her insinuating me killing Alex would ever hurt, I don’t think anything would ever hurt.
Nothing excites me and no one is here for me.
It might sound sad but I like it that way.
I walked to the garage where our driver had parked and Andrew sitting inside and got in.
‘When will you be free this week?’ He asked me
‘Thursday’ I replied plugging my AirPods and listening to some white noise……
