Chapter 1: The new girl
Absolutely 😂❤️ Let’s make it around 1,600 words. Long enough to feel like a proper chapter, but not the 5,000-word monster from before.
THE GIRL BEHIND THE SECRET
Chapter One: The New Girl
Amara Hayes stared through the car window as the unfamiliar city passed by.
She had been quiet for most of the journey.
Her mother noticed.
“You’re nervous.”
Amara looked away from the window. “I’m not.”
Her mother smiled. “You’ve been holding your backpack for two hours.”
Amara looked down at her hands.
She was gripping the straps tightly.
“Okay,” she admitted. “Maybe I’m a little nervous.”
“That’s normal. New school, new city, new people.”
“That’s exactly the problem.”
Her mother laughed softly.
“You’ll be fine.”
Amara wasn't convinced.
Three weeks ago, she had lived in another city, gone to another school, and had friends she had known for years.
Now everything was different.
The car finally stopped in front of a large school building.
A sign above the entrance read:
WESTBRIDGE HIGH SCHOOL
Students were everywhere.
Some were walking through the gates while others stood around talking.
Amara took a deep breath.
“Ready?”
“No.”
Her mother laughed.
“Go.”
Amara opened the door and stepped outside.
Almost immediately, she noticed people looking at her.
She hated being stared at.
She adjusted her backpack and walked toward the entrance.
“Are you new?”
Amara turned.
A girl with long braids and a bright smile stood beside her.
“Yes.”
“I knew it.” The girl smiled. “I’m Maya.”
“Amara.”
“Nice to meet you, Amara.”
“Nice to meet you too.”
Maya pointed toward the building.
“Come on. I’ll show you around before you get completely lost.”
Amara smiled.
“Thanks.”
They walked through the hallway.
Maya talked nonstop.
“That’s the science lab. That’s the library. The cafeteria is downstairs. And whatever you do, don't annoy Mr. Carter.”
“Why?”
“He gives surprise tests.”
Amara laughed.
“I already hate him.”
“You haven't even met him.”
“I trust you.”
Maya grinned.
They continued walking until they reached a staircase.
Maya suddenly stopped.
“Wait.”
“What?”
She pointed toward the hallway.
A group of students were walking toward them.
At the center was a boy Amara hadn't seen before.
He was tall, with dark hair and a calm expression. He wore the school uniform like everyone else, but somehow he stood out.
Students greeted him as he passed.
“Hey, Jayden.”
“What's up, Jayden?”
He nodded at them without saying much.
Amara looked at Maya.
“Who’s that?”
Maya stared at her.
“You seriously don't know?”
“No.”
“That’s Jayden.”
“Okay.”
Maya laughed.
“Okay? That's all?”
“What am I supposed to say?”
“Nothing. Just don't get involved with him.”
Amara raised an eyebrow.
“Why?”
Maya lowered her voice.
“Because nobody really knows what goes on with him.”
Before Amara could ask more, Jayden walked past them.
His eyes briefly met Amara’s.
He stopped.
For a second, neither of them said anything.
Then Jayden looked at the books in her arms.
“You're new.”
Amara nodded.
“Yeah.”
“Welcome to Westbridge.”
He walked away.
Amara watched him disappear down the hallway.
Maya smiled.
“Interesting.”
“What?”
“You two stared at each other.”
“We did not.”
“You definitely did.”
Amara rolled her eyes.
“I don't even know him.”
“Exactly.”
---
By lunchtime, Amara had already started feeling more comfortable.
Maya introduced her to a few classmates, although Amara quickly realized she would probably forget half their names.
They sat together in the cafeteria.
Maya was talking about their teachers when Amara noticed Jayden sitting across the room.
He was with three boys.
One of them was Ethan, whom Maya had introduced earlier.
Jayden wasn't talking much.
Then his phone buzzed.
He checked the screen.
His expression changed immediately.
Amara noticed.
He looked worried.
Ethan leaned toward him.
“What happened?”
Jayden shook his head.
“Nothing.”
He stood.
“Where are you going?” Ethan asked.
“I need to go.”
Jayden walked out of the cafeteria.
Maya watched him leave.
“That was strange.”
Amara looked at her.
“You noticed it too?”
“Yeah. Jayden never leaves lunch early.”
“Maybe he had something to do.”
“Maybe.”
But Amara could tell Maya didn't believe that.
---
After school, Amara packed her books.
Maya waved goodbye.
“See you tomorrow!”
“Bye.”
Amara walked toward the school gate.
As she passed the lockers, she noticed a folded piece of paper on the floor.
She picked it up.
There was no name on it.
Curious, she opened it.
Only one sentence was written inside.
Stay away from Jayden.
Amara stared at it.
She looked around.
Nobody seemed to be watching.
She folded the paper and put it into her notebook.
Maybe it was a joke.
Maybe someone had dropped it.
She tried to forget about it.
But she couldn't.
---
That evening, Amara sat at her desk doing homework.
Her phone buzzed.
She expected a message from Maya.
Instead, it was an unknown number.
UNKNOWN: You should not have come to Westbridge.
Amara froze.
She stared at the screen.
Another message arrived.
UNKNOWN: Stay away from Jayden.
Her heart began beating faster.
She typed:
Amara: Who are you?
The message was seen.
No reply.
Amara waited.
Nothing.
She looked toward her bedroom window.
Across the street, a black car was parked.
She couldn't see the person inside.
Amara stood slowly.
The car remained there for several seconds.
Then it drove away.
Her phone buzzed again.
UNKNOWN: He isn't who you think he is.
Amara swallowed.
She didn't know what to think.
She had known Jayden for less than a day.
Why was someone warning her about him?
---
The next morning, Amara arrived at school early.
She found Maya near the lockers.
“Morning.”
“Morning.”
Maya looked at her.
“You look tired.”
“I didn't sleep well.”
“Why?”
Amara hesitated.
She wasn't ready to tell Maya everything.
“Just thinking about the new school.”
Maya nodded.
“Understandable.”
Then she noticed something behind Amara.
“That's Jayden.”
Amara turned.
Jayden was standing near the opposite hallway.
He was talking quietly with Ethan.
Their conversation seemed serious.
Ethan suddenly looked toward Amara.
Jayden followed his gaze.
Their eyes met.
Jayden immediately stopped talking.
He walked toward her.
“Can I talk to you?”
Amara looked at Maya.
Maya gave her a suspicious look.
“Sure.”
Jayden led her a few steps away.
“You got a message last night?”
Amara's eyes widened.
“How do you know?”
“Because I got one too.”
He showed her his phone.
The same unknown number.
Amara stared at the screen.
“What did yours say?”
Jayden looked at her.
“Something about you.”
Her stomach dropped.
“About me?”
He nodded.
“What did it say?”
Jayden hesitated.
Then he locked his phone.
“I can't tell you.”
“Why?”
“Because the less you know, the safer you are.”
Amara frowned.
“That doesn't make sense.”
“I know.”
“Then explain.”
Jayden looked around.
“Not here.”
“Then where?”
“After school.”
Amara folded her arms.
“Why should I trust you?”
Jayden looked directly at her.
“You shouldn't.”
That answer surprised her.
He walked away.
---
After classes ended, Amara waited near the school gate.
Jayden eventually appeared.
“Come with me.”
“Where?”
“Somewhere quiet.”
They walked toward the empty sports field.
The afternoon sun was beginning to set.
Jayden stopped near the bleachers.
“I don't know how much I can tell you.”
“Then tell me what you can.”
Jayden took a deep breath.
“My family has a secret.”
Amara waited.
“What kind of secret?”
“My father disappeared three years ago.”
Amara's expression changed.
“Disappeared?”
“Yes.”
“Did the police look for him?”
“Of course.”
“And?”
“They found nothing.”
“Do you think he's alive?”
Jayden looked away.
“I don't know.”
Amara felt sorry for him.
“I'm sorry.”
Jayden nodded.
“Recently, I've been getting messages from someone who claims to know where he is.”
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
“What do they want?”
“That’s what I'm trying to find out.”
Amara remembered the anonymous messages.
“Is that why someone is warning me about you?”
Jayden looked at her.
“Yes.”
“Why would they care about me?”
“I don't know.”
“You're lying.”
Jayden's expression hardened.
“I’m not.”
“You know something.”
He stayed silent.
Amara stepped closer.
“You know something about me.”
Jayden looked at her for a long moment.
Finally, he said quietly:
“I think they chose you for a reason.”
Before Amara could respond, they heard footsteps.
Both of them turned.
Someone was standing near the school building.
A shadow.
The person immediately ran.
Jayden chased after them.
“Wait!”
Amara followed.
But by the time they reached the building, the person was gone.
Jayden looked around.
Something was lying on the ground.
A black envelope.
He picked it up.
Inside was a photograph.
Jayden stared at it.
His face went pale.
“What is it?” Amara asked.
He handed it to her.
Amara looked at the photograph.
It showed a man standing outside Westbridge High.
Jayden's father.
Amara looked at Jayden.
“That's your father.”
He nodded.
“But that's impossible.”
“Why?”
Jayden pointed at the date written on the back.
Yesterday.
Amara's eyes widened.
Someone had photographed Jayden's missing father outside their school just one day ago.
Then Amara noticed something else.
There was another photograph inside the envelope.
She pulled it out.
Her heart stopped.
It was a picture of her.
Standing outside Westbridge High.
Taken that morning.
Jayden looked at her.
Neither of them spoke.
Someone wasn't just watching Jayden.
They were watching Amara too.
And now she knew one thing for certain.
Her new school wasn't going to be the fresh start she had hoped for.
It was the beginning of a secret that could change everything.
