The night I learned the truth

1236 Words

DRAVEN I heard them… I woke up because of a sound. At first, it was small. A shuffle. A whisper. Something brushing against wood. I turned on the mat I was lying on and covered my ears. I still hurt everywhere… my ribs, my legs, even my head. Whoever brought me here had tried to clean me up, but the pain was still inside my bones. I didn’t want to wake up. I didn’t want to feel anything. My body was tired, and so was my mind. But the sound came again. Louder this time. Voices. Someone was talking. Two people, maybe. Their voices were low, but something about their tone pricked my ears and pulled me awake. I didn’t pay attention at first. I told myself maybe they were just talking about something else. Maybe they were just two villagers, or two travellers, discussing their business.
