Chapter One
Chloe's POV
The camera flashes blinded me the moment my heels hit the pavement outside the grand hotel. Brandon was already there, holding his hand out to me with a smile that could melt glaciers. He looked like a literal prince standing under the canopy of crystal lights.
"Ready to become Houston, beautiful?" he whispered, his voice smooth and dripping with affection.
I slid my hand into his, my heart doing a familiar, happy flip. My life had felt exactly like a movie these past few months, a fairytale I still could not believe was real. I was just an ordinary intern at Houston Logistics when Brandon, the CEO’s son, noticed me in the breakroom.
One coffee date turned into a whirlwind romance, and two weeks ago, he shocked the entire company by dropping to one knee in the lobby. He had asked me to be his forever right there in front of everyone. It was the easiest yes of my entire life.
Now, we walked hand-in-hand into the grand ballroom, the heavy gold doors swinging open to reveal hundreds of elite guests. Applause erupted instantly, filling the massive space with deafening noise. Prominent politicians, wealthy business moguls, and socialites smiled and waved at us as we made our way to the VIP table.
Brandon left my side briefly to take the microphone at the center of the stage. He cleared his throat, his posture radiating absolute confidence and charm.
"Thank you all for celebrating this milestone with us tonight," Brandon spoke into the mic, his eyes locking onto mine. "I used to think success was just about corporate power, but then Chloe walked into my life. She is my grounding force, my beautiful future wife, and the best thing that has ever happened to me."
The crowd let out a collective, soft sigh, and I felt a deep blush creep up my neck. I looked down at my lap, my fingers tracing the massive diamond ring on my left hand. I felt like the luckiest woman alive in that exact second.
Brandon stepped off the stage, walked straight to our table, and leaned down to press a sweet, lingering kiss onto my lips. The taste of champagne lingered on his breath as he pulled back with a grin.
Suddenly, a loud vibration rattled from his jacket pocket. He pulled out his phone, his eyes widening slightly as he stared at the screen for a split second. A flash of something cold passed over his face, but he quickly swiped the notification away.
"Everything okay?" I asked, noticing the tension in his jaw.
"Just a work emergency, nothing to worry about," he said, smoothing down his tuxedo jacket. "I need to hit the restroom and handle this quickly, okay? I’ll be right back, my love."
I nodded, watching him walk away toward the back exit with a hurried stride. I didn’t think much of it because the Houstons were always managing heavy business crises.
I stood up to mingle with the guests, but my eyes kept darting down to my own phone screen. Ava, my childhood best friend, was still completely missing in action. We had known each other since we were five years old, and she had promised to be here early.
I unlocked my phone and dialed her number for the fifth time tonight. It rang all the way to voicemail, her cheerful recorded voice telling me to leave a message. I sighed heavily, gripping the phone tightly against my side.
What could possibly be delaying her on the biggest night of my life? Ava knew how nervous I was about marrying into high society, yet she wasn't here to hold my hand. A small knot of anxiety began to form in the pit of my stomach.
After an hour of fake smiling and repeating the same thank-you phrases to strangers, my body was aching. The heavy, beaded designer gown I was wearing felt suffocatingly tight against my ribs. I needed to breathe, touch up my makeup, and change into the lighter silk dress I brought.
I politely excused myself from a group of Brandon’s aunts, slipping away toward the private elevators. The hotel had booked us the Royal Suite on the top floor for the night. The hallway was completely silent, a sharp and welcome contrast to the booming bass of the ballroom below.
I walked down the plush carpeted corridor, my mind drifting to my late father. He had passed away a year ago, leaving me nothing but a secure hard drive containing a highly complex, unfinished core tech project. He always told me it would change the world, but I never had the resources to develop it.
I reached the double doors of the Royal Suite and reached for the gold handle. Before I could insert the keycard, a muffled sound from inside made me freeze. It was a high-pitched, breathless laugh that sounded hauntingly familiar.
"Brandon, stop," Ava’s voice echoed through the thick wood, sounding frantic yet playful. "Tell me how it feels downstairs. How does it feel to make Chloe look like an absolute fool in front of the entire city?"
My breath hitched violently in my throat, my hand freezing on the handle. I felt the blood completely drain from my face as my mind scrambled to make sense of the words. Ava was inside the room with my fiancé.
"It’s hilarious, honestly," Brandon’s voice boomed from the other side, completely devoid of the warmth he used to use with me. "She actually thinks I fell for an ordinary little intern. She sits down there blushing like a pathetic i***t while I’m dying to get back up here to you."
A sharp, physical pain stabbed through my chest, making it hard to draw a single breath. My knees trembled so violently I had to lean against the doorframe for support.
"She’s going to find out eventually," Ava gasped out, followed by a wet, sickening sound. "What happens when she realizes I’m the one carrying the Houston heir in my stomach right now?"
My hands began to shake uncontrollably as tears blurred my vision, burning my eyes. Ava was pregnant with Brandon's child while he wore my ring downstairs.
"She won't find out until it’s too late," Brandon laughed, his voice laced with pure malice. "The only reason my father approved this farce is because of that core project her dad left behind. Ava, you were brilliant to find out about it before he died."
"I told you it was worth millions," Ava purred, her voice dripping with pride. "Once your tech team cracks his encryption, we will be richer than God."
"Exactly," Brandon growled out. "Once that project is fully developed and under my name, I will waste no time divorcing her. I'll throw her straight into the dump where she belongs, and then you and our baby will take her place."
The world seemed to tilt on its axis, spinning out of control. The people I loved most in the world hadn't just betrayed me; they were actively plotting to rob me of my father's final legacy.
A white-hot, suffocating fury completely replaced the agonizing pain in my chest. The tears dried on my cheeks as my hands clenched into tight fists, my fingernails digging into my palms.
I gripped the gold handle, pushed down hard, and slammed the heavy door open against the wall. The loud crash echoed through the luxurious suite like a gunshot.
The sight before me was a scene straight out of a nightmare. They were completely naked, their bodies tightly entwined on the silk sheets of the bed we were supposed to share. Brandon was hovering over Ava, his hands tangled in her hair, their mouths frozen open in shock.
Ava screamed, frantically pulling the white duvet up to cover her chest, her eyes wide with terror. Brandon scrambled backward, tumbling off the side of the bed onto the floor in his haste to get away.
"Chloe," Brandon stammered, his face turning a ghostly shade of white as he looked at me. "It’s not what it looks like. Let me explain, please."
I stood tall in the doorway, staring down at them with a cold, unyielding detachment that surprised even myself. I reached down to my finger, sliding the heavy diamond ring off without a second thought.
I threw the ring across the room, watching it bounce off Brandon’s forehead before landing on the hardwood floor.
"The wedding is off," I said, my voice dangerously calm and lethal. "And I will make sure the entire world knows exactly what kind of monsters you are."
Brandon's terrified expression suddenly shifted, hardening into a cold, arrogant sneer as he realized the secret was completely out. He stood up naked, not bothering to cover himself, and let out a sharp, mocking laugh that cut through the silence.
"Go ahead and tell them, Chloe," Brandon sneered, crossing his arms over his chest. "Who do you think the board will believe? You are a nobody intern with no money, no power, and now, no fiancé."
Ava let out a cruel, giggling laugh from the bed, her fear completely vanishing. "Did you really think a guy like Brandon could ever actually love a plain, boring nerd like you?"
"You're just a charity case we used to get the tech," Brandon mocked, stepping closer to me with a predatory smile. "You're a joke, Chloe. Look at you, standing there in your pretty dress, entirely alone."
The raw cruelty of their laughter felt like physical blows, suffocating me. I couldn't breathe, couldn't think, couldn't stand to look at their twisted faces for another second.
I turned on my heel and sprinted out of the suite, my heavy heels clicking frantically against the floor. I ran past the elevators, taking the emergency stairs instead, tears finally spilling over my eyelids in a blinding torrent.
I burst through the lobby doors, ignoring the shocked stares of the hotel staff. Gasps echoed through the grand ballroom the moment I pushed the heavy gold doors open. My hair was plastered to my neck, my expensive makeup was smeared and I was looking like a total walking disaster.
I didn't care about the whispers or the shocked stares of the high-society elite. I marched straight up the steps of the stage, grabbed the microphone from the podium, and tapped it loudly.
"Can I get everyone's attention, please?" my voice boomed through the massive sound system, silencing the entire room instantly.
The media cameras immediately pivoted toward me, their flashes exploding in a rapid, blinding sequence. I looked directly into the lenses, ensuring my voice would carry to every news outlet by morning.
"The wedding is officially over," I announced clearly, pointing a finger toward the back entrance where Brandon and Ava were running in.
"The groom, Brandon Houston, has been sleeping with my childhood best friend," I stated, my voice echoing off the high ceilings. "In fact, that b***h standing right over there is currently carrying the Houston heir. Ironic, right?"
The room erupted into absolute chaos, socialites gasping and reporters shouting questions as they turned their cameras directly onto the guilty couple. Brandon’s face turned an ugly, demonic shade of purple as his family's reputation crumbled in seconds.
“How Dare You Chloe?!!” Brandon roared angrily.
