Chapter 24: Almost
Amara wasn’t supposed to think about it.
That brief moment.
Outside the restaurant.
That feeling—
Like she was being watched.
Like she knew who it was.
She had ignored it.
Gotten into the car.
Left without looking back.
That was the right thing to do.
So why—
Was it still on her mind?
The next morning, her office was quiet.
Too quiet.
The kind of silence that made thoughts louder than they should be.
Amara sat at her desk, a file open in front of her, but her eyes hadn’t moved from the same page in minutes.
Focus.
That was what mattered.
Not the past.
Not him.
A knock came at the door.
“Come in.”
Her assistant stepped inside.
“You have a visitor.”
Amara didn’t look up.
“Reschedule.”
A pause.
Then—
“He says it’s important.”
She exhaled softly.
“They always do.”
Another pause.
“Miss Daniels… it’s Mr. Cole.”
Silence.
Not long.
But enough.
Amara closed the file slowly.
For a moment—
She said nothing.
Then—
“Let him in.”
Ethan walked in like he had something to prove.
Not arrogance.
Not control.
Something else.
Something heavier.
Amara didn’t stand.
Didn’t greet him.
She simply looked at him.
Waiting.
“You keep showing up,” she said calmly.
Ethan stopped a few steps away.
“And you keep sending me away.”
Her brow lifted slightly.
“And yet you’re still here.”
Silence.
But this time—
It wasn’t sharp.
It wasn’t cold.
It was… something else.
“I saw you last night,” Ethan said.
Amara didn’t react.
“Then you should have kept driving.”
His jaw tightened.
“You looked at me.”
That made her pause.
Just slightly.
“Did I?”
Ethan took a step closer.
“You knew I was there.”
A beat passed.
Then—
Amara leaned back slightly in her chair.
“Even if I did…”
Her voice softened.
Just a little.
“What difference does it make?”
That question—
It hit deeper than she expected.
Ethan stared at her.
“Because it means you’re not as unaffected as you pretend to be.”
There it was.
The assumption.
Amara held his gaze.
Steady.
But something inside her shifted.
“I’m not pretending,” she said quietly.
“Then prove it.”
The words came too quickly.
Too directly.
And for a moment—
Everything stilled.
Amara stood.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
She walked toward him.
Step by step—
Until there was almost no space left between them.
Ethan didn’t move.
Didn’t step back.
He just watched her.
Close enough now—
To see every detail.
Every change.
Every difference.
“You want proof?” she asked softly.
His breath slowed.
“Yes.”
A pause.
A dangerous one.
Then—
Amara reached out.
Her fingers brushing lightly against his wrist.
Ethan stilled.
Because that—
That was new.
She stepped closer.
Even closer.
Close enough that he could feel her breath.
And for a second—
Just one—
Everything disappeared.
The anger.
The distance.
The past.
There was only this moment.
And then—
She leaned in.
Ethan’s breath caught.
But instead of closing the distance—
She stopped.
Just inches away.
Her voice dropped.
Barely above a whisper.
“This doesn’t change anything.”
And just like that—
She stepped back.
The moment shattered.
Gone.
Ethan’s chest tightened.
Because for a second—
He felt it.
What it used to be.
And now—
It was gone again.
“You’re still trying,” she said calmly, returning to her desk.
“But you’re chasing something that’s already over.”
Ethan let out a slow breath.
“Then why didn’t you stop me?”
She didn’t look at him.
“Because I don’t need to.”
Silence.
“You’ll stop on your own.”
That was the difference now.
She didn’t push him away.
She simply didn’t hold on.
Ethan stood there for a moment longer.
Then—
He nodded slightly.
Not in agreement.
But in understanding.
Because this wasn’t a fight he could win.
Not like this.
And as he turned to leave—
He realized something else.
The most dangerous part wasn’t that she had moved on.
It was that for a moment—
She almost hadn’t.
