Chapter 12: Obsession The room felt empty after she left. Too empty. Ethan stood where she had walked past him, his jaw tight, his mind anything but calm. Amara Daniels. The name echoed in his head like something unfinished. It didn’t make sense. None of it did. The woman he married— The woman he dismissed— The woman he accused— Was now sitting across from him as his equal. No. Not just equal. Dangerous. His grip tightened slightly at his side. “How did I miss this?” he muttered under his breath. Because he had. Completely. And that— That didn’t sit well with him. “Sir?” His assistant stepped in cautiously. “Yes.” “The meeting summary is ready.” Ethan didn’t look at him. “I want everything on Daniels Group.” A pause. “Everything?” “Everything,” he repeated, his voice colder now. “History. Ownership. Connections. I want to know who I’m dealing with.” The assistant hesitated. “Sir… Daniels Group is very private. Information isn’t easily accessible.” Ethan’s expression darkened. “Then dig deeper.” Across the city— Vanessa sat in front of her vanity mirror, her fingers gripping the edge tightly. Her reflection stared back at her. Perfect. Flawless. And yet— Not enough. “Daniels Group,” she whispered. The name tasted bitter. She had heard of it. Of course she had. Everyone in their circle had. Powerful. Untouchable. Elite. And now— Amara was connected to it. “No,” Vanessa said sharply, shaking her head. “That’s not possible.” But it was. She had seen it. Felt it. The way people reacted to her. The way she carried herself. The way Ethan looked at her. Her eyes narrowed slightly. Something dangerous flickered within them. “If she thinks she can come back and take what’s mine…” she murmured. Her lips curved slowly. “She’s wrong.” Back at the Daniels estate— I walked into the office, my heels clicking softly against the polished floor. “Miss Daniels.” I nodded slightly. “Update?” “The meeting went as expected,” the assistant replied. “Cole Group is already responding.” Of course they were. Ethan wasn’t the type to sit still. Good. “Prepare the next phase,” I said calmly. A brief pause. “And the internal audit?” “Completed.” “Any issues?” “None.” I nodded. Perfect. Everything was falling into place. Exactly as planned. “Miss Daniels…” I turned slightly. “Yes?” “There’s one more thing.” “What is it?” “The investigation into the document incident.” My expression didn’t change. But my eyes sharpened slightly. “And?” The assistant hesitated. “There’s evidence of interference.” My fingers stilled. “Explain.” “The document didn’t end up in your room by accident,” he said carefully. “It was placed there.” Silence. Cold. Expected. “And the source?” I asked. “We’re still confirming,” he replied. “But we have a strong lead.” I nodded slowly. “Good.” Because now— The game had changed. Meanwhile— Ethan sat alone in his office, the city lights glowing faintly through the windows. His phone buzzed. He picked it up immediately. “Yes.” “I found something,” the voice on the other end said. Ethan straightened slightly. “What?” A pause. “Daniels Group isn’t just powerful,” the voice continued. “It’s controlled by a single family.” His eyes narrowed. “Which family?” Another pause. Then— “The Daniels family.” Silence. Heavy. Obvious. And yet— Not enough. “I need more than that,” Ethan said. “You’ll want to hear this,” the voice added. His grip on the phone tightened. “Go on.” “The current acting head…” A pause. “…is Amara Daniels.” Everything stopped. Time. Thought. Breath. Ethan went still. Because that— That changed everything. “You’re sure?” he asked quietly. “Completely.” Silence stretched between them. Long. Heavy. Then— Ethan let out a slow breath. “…Interesting.” Because now— He wasn’t just dealing with his wife. Or his rival. He was dealing with someone far more dangerous. And for the first time— Ethan felt it. That unfamiliar pull. Not anger. Not irritation. Something else. Something deeper. Obsession.
