Chapter 1
"No, you can't. I forbid it." Natalie Havana yelled through her daughter's bedroom door.
"Mom, it's not up for debate. I got the job, and I'm keeping it." Sugar yelled back, and Natalie banged on the door some more.
Natalie was so worried about her daughter becoming a detective that she couldn't sleep. At four-thirty, she arrived at her daughter's house and banged on Sugar's door until she remembered she had a key.
All the banging woke Sugar up, but she locked her bedroom door before her mother could make it up the stairs. So her mother continued banging, this time on Sugar's bedroom door. Sugar was slightly annoyed but not too bothered to ruin her mood. She decided to get dressed and brush her teeth while her mother was speaking.
"Sweetheart, please just reconsider. It's dangerous out there." Natalie said
"Mom, I love you, but I have wanted this for years and finally got in. I'm not turning back now." Sugar smiled at her mom through the door, knowing that she was just being worried that her only daughter was now a detective.
Sugar unlocked the door and hugged her mom.
"I'm sorry, sweetheart, but this is not what I wanted from my baby girl to follow after all your brothers and your father into the line of duty. Why couldn't you do what I do and become a baker?" Natalia asked her that every time Sugar got a career she thought she wanted, even in high school, she got a job at McDonald's, and her mom complained until she told her that she only wanted the job because she wanted to eat fries for dinner and lunch. Her mother also thought this was a phase. But this wasn't. She had wanted it since she was a little girl to be like her big brother Dante, who worked for the FBI.
"Mom, I need to prove that I can do this. I'm tough, and I know things. Just because I am nice doesn't mean I can't kick ass." I said, "Now, Mom, I have to go to work and meet my partner. Can you not cry when I leave? I can see the tears welling up in your eyes. Don't shed them, please."
"Oh, my darling, I love you so much. I promise I won't cry until you leave, and I can't see your car anymore." She sniffled and sighed
"Okay, Mom," Sugar said, walking around Natalie and down the stairs, grabbing her keys from the counter, and walking out the door. She hopped in the car, played music loudly, and sang along equally loudly. She wasn't a bad singer, but people objected to her yelling and singing early in the morning as they honked and shouted.

Victor was waiting in a long line to get a cup of coffee before meeting his new partner. There were two baristas, and one of the lines seemed to not be moving, and he was on that line. Victor looked around and saw a tall blonde talking with a chatty barista. He sighed in frustration and got on the other quick-moving line. He was now behind a short brunette. She smelled of strawberries, and he liked it. He realized he was too close to her when he heard her say.
"Are you okay, sir?" She asked
"I... um...uh-huh." That was all he said
"I'll take that as a yes. Oh, I'm next. Wish me luck." She said
"Huh?" He asked
"Because they always give me weird looks because I order hot chocolate. I don't like coffee, so what can you do? Like, what am I going to do? Order a smoothie, ew. Even in summer, I get hot ch-"
"Ma'am, you're next." The barista said
"Wish me luck." She said
"Good luck." Vic didn't even know when the words left his mouth but was shocked by the sudden occurrence.
He looked at the barista, who gave the woman a scrunched face and got the woman her drink.
"Thanks, " the woman said to the barista and then turned and looked at Vic. Good luck with her; she seems grumpy."
Victor nodded and sniffed her before she left.
Victor ordered his coffee and went back to his car.
"What the hell just happened?" Victor said out loud to himself when he shut the door to his car.

Captain Felds was waiting for Havana in his office with Victor.
"Captain, I don't need a partner. I'm good at doing things myself; Engoose was kinda a lazy partner," Victor said
"Well, the department says you need a partner whether you like it or not." Felds said
"I don't see why," Victor said
"It's protocol."
Felds saw the cheerful brunette walk their way towards the door, getting a few stares and smiles from the men.
"Suck it up because here she comes." Felds said
Petrov turned and saw the brunette from the coffee shop bounce on her heels into the Captain's office.
"Victor Petrov, I'd like you to meet your new partner, my sister Sugar Havana." Felds said
"Hey, you're the guy who stood behind me in the coffee shop. We shared a moment. He even wished me luck on my quest to get a hot chocolate in a coffee spot." Sugar said
"Mmm." That was all Victor said
"You wished her luck?" Felds asked eyebrows raised and mouth open.
"You're acting like he's never done anything like that before, Kevin." Sugar said
"He never does. He's kinda known around here for being mean to everyone." Felds said
"I'm sitting right here," Victor said
"Well, Havana, meet Victor Petrov, your new partner. I hope you get to see a different side of him than the rest of us," Felds said, smirking at a frowning Victor.
"I am so happy to be here finally and to meet you, Vic." Sugar said
"Victor." He said his full name.
"Excuse me?" Sugar asked with a head tilt.
"My name is Victor, not Vic or Detective Petrov." He explained to the small female.
"I'll call you Vicky." Sugar said
"Victor." He said again
"Victorrrrr." Sugar rolled her tongue.
"Victor. No extra tongue rolling."
"Vic, it is." Sugar said, walking out of the room to their shared desk.
"I can't work with her," Victor growled
"You're going to have to. Havana is one of the best." Felds said, "You're dismissed, Detective."
"But..."
"Dismissed," Fields said, pointing at his door.
Victor growled but left the office.
Kevin sighed. He knew that the little tiger would either make the bear more surly or he would become nice. Kevin was happy his father would be off his back about caring for his sister.

"You don't have the same last name as your brother," Victor said curiously.
"Nope." She said still so cheerily.
"Do you have the same parents?" He asked
"Yes. But all the boys have my dad's last name, and girls have my mom's. It was an agreement between my parents after my fourth brother was born. I have six brothers, and I'm the only girl. I was surprised since my brothers are twelve to sixteen years older than me. My mom had me at 45, so yeah, everyone was shocked that she could still have kids. Then, to make sure no mistakes were made, my mom got her tubes tied. She was just happy she finally got a girl. But she's devastated that I..."
"For the love of everything, be quiet!" Victor yelled, turning all the heads in their direction.
But that didn't even make Sugar flinch. She just smirked
"Oh, you'll warm up to me. I'm a talker. I think that you'll like me if you... Well, you'll see." Sugar said, cutting herself off at his growl.

As the month went on, no big cases came up, so they were doing paperwork. Victor watched as all the males in the precinct watched as she got up, stretched, and walked around. He didn't mind unless they were being obvious.
He growled, shaking his head. The other looked at him and went back to their work. He was so irritated because Sugar Havana had talked his damn ear off and had been nice to half the precinct. He couldn't wait to get home, crack open a cold beer, and watch some late-night shows.
"Calling it a night... Vic?" Sugar said sickeningly sweet
"Yes." He said in a curt tone.
"Wanna grab a drink?" She smiled
"No."
"Okay."
"You ready to go, Sugar?" Officer Judd asked
"Coming, Manny." She waited for him to walk away. "I'm going out with a group who's very friendly. They think they'll be able to drink me under the table, but I grew up with six brothers so I can drink them under the table." Sugar smiled
"Let's go then," Victor said, rising to the challenge.
"Go. Oh, you're coming? That's great. Let's go." She said
You can't out-drink me, and no way would I let you deal with those assholes alone.
