(HIS) Chapter 07
In the days that followed, he was still quiet. Even when I teased him, his face would show irritation, but he wouldn't say a word. He wouldn't argue.
During break, I saw them eating together. I usually sat with his other friends, but this time, I intentionally sat beside him. He glanced at me but didn't tell me to leave.
"These two, Lucas and Catelynn, are always at the top of the class! Don't you guys have a hard time with your studies?" Rome asked just as I sat down.
"Nope. It's fun to study cases and research." Lucas shrugged.
"As long as you review, you won't have a hard time answering," Catelynn said with a small smile.
Their conversation revolved around schoolwork. He talked with his friends, but he couldn't even glance at me. That's when I realized he was only like this with me—he only had a problem with me. Maybe he thought that if he didn't talk to me, I'd eventually stop? Well, his silent treatment was ineffective.
"You really eat a lot!" Ryder pointed out.
Rome was seated in front of me, and next to him was Ryder. Leela was beside Lucas's girlfriend, who was sitting next to Lucas.
Rome also looked at my plate and laughed. I had rice and a variety of canteen menus. Of course, a bread and a chocolate dessert.
"Good thing you don't get fat," Rome said.
They were all around the same age, about four or five years older than me. I wasn't sure if they all had the same course. I was only guessing Lucas and his girlfriend were in law because of what they were talking about. They were both graduating this year.
"Not really. No matter how much I eat, I'm still sexy." I turned to my side. "Right, Lucas?"
Lucas froze mid-bite. His friends and even his girlfriend turned to look at him. His jaw moved before he finally replied.
"I'm not judging people based on their bodies, so I don't know," he said, continuing to eat as if he didn't care.
I wanted to tease him further but held back. I just laughed and turned to Ryder.
"Still sexy though, right, Ryder?" I leaned back, arching my body a bit. Ryder and Rome laughed. Ryder nodded.
After eating, I excused myself. I was walking in front of the lockers on my way to my next class when someone grabbed my arm.
Lucas pulled me to a hidden corner by the lockers. He peeked around to check if anyone was coming or passing by. When he didn't see anyone, he faced me.
One of his arms was blocking my way out, preventing me from leaving. He was leaning down angrily while I tilted my head up, waiting to hear what he had to say and why he had to hide me here.
"Don't talk to me like that in front of my friends! Particularly in front of my girlfriend!" he snapped.
I was tempted to snap back, but instead, I just smirked. Slowly, I ran my index finger over his chest while he clenched his teeth in anger.
"But I'm really sexy. Aren't I?" I chuckled. "You've seen my naked body. You know it."
"I'm not joking, Lucienne! What if my girlfriend notices because of questions like that?"
"Notice what? Notices that something's going—"
"Nothing's going on!" He was even angrier now, and his glare was darker.
I laughed and placed both my palms on his chest, tilting my head up slightly.
"Then if nothing's going on, what are you so afraid of?"
He grabbed both my wrists in one hand so I couldn't touch his chest or trail my fingers lower. Roughly, he pulled me closer so he could blow his anger right into my face.
"I no longer want to play the game you wanted! Are you really like this? Do you really love flirting with men?"
"What? Men?" I narrowed my eyes. "I'm only flirting with you—"
"You're flirting with me and Ryder! I saw you!"
My lips parted, and a smile slowly formed.
"Ah..." I remembered the banter Ryder and I had under the tree. "So that's why you've been ignoring me-because you're jealous and think I'm flirting with Ryder?"
He looked stunned at my question. His grip on my wrists loosened, allowing me to pull them back. I leaned against the locker with my arms crossed, raising my brows at him. My grin was wide, almost laughing.
"Are you jealous of him, Lucas? Is that it?"
"Are you out of your mind?"
He looked at me with insulting disdain, scanning from my heeled school shoes to my short skirt to my fitted blouse. His eyes stopped at mine.
"Do you really think I'd go for you and leave my girlfriend? Look at yourself. You don't even know how to wear decent clothes."
I didn't speak, just kept my arms crossed and my brows raised.
"Maybe?" I smirked. "Who knows? One day, your taste will change."
He shook his head immediately.
"I will never choose you over her! I will never lower my standards and choose you! I would never want to marry a woman like you!" he shouted angrily.
I was a little embarrassed, but I didn't drop my grin. I kept my bold expression.
"Marriage? Did I say anything about marriage? Who said we were getting married?" I laughed off the embarrassment.
He grew more furious with each sarcastic answer I gave, as if every word I spoke offended him.
"We have plans. We're going to law school together. After we graduate, we're getting married. So don't go dreaming that I'm jealous, because I will never leave my girlfriend for someone like you!"
I didn't know why his words embarrassed and affected me, but I refused to let him see that. I laughed and rolled my eyes, leaning heavier against the locker. I stared at him. His beautiful eyes weren't so beautiful today, because their color was full of anger and irritation.
"Why are you explaining yourself? I just asked if you were jealous. If not, then fine." I laughed.
"Don't ever do that again! Don't ever talk to me like that again! I don't want us breaking up because of you!" he warned sharply before leaving me there.
My teasing grin faded as soon as he walked away. I took a deep breath and roughly combed my fingers through my hair. After a few more classes, we went home together. He was quiet in the car while I sang along to every song that played, sometimes headbanging.
"If you're not going to let me go home, then have my car brought here. We'll go to school separately starting tomorrow."
"Who are you to decide?" I said sarcastically and changed the song.
"I'll follow whatever you want me to do when we're in your house. But when we're outside, I don't want you controlling me." His voice was calm but cold.
I rolled my eyes. "I'm the one who decides, not you."
I screamed when the car suddenly stopped. I grabbed the seat belt he made me wear and looked at him. His face was tight with rage.
"You don't own me! My parents owe you, but you don't own me!"
I was shocked and almost recoiled at the force of his yell. His voice was trapped inside the car, making it impossible not to hear it. I stared at his face.
"I'll work while I'm staying at your place. I'll save up to pay you back. I already have my own money, and I'll use it to pay you. It's not enough yet, so for now, I have no choice but to follow what you want. But I won't follow everything because I have my limits. Do you understand?"
I stayed quiet because he was furious-veins in his neck were visible. He restarted the car. Neither of us spoke for the rest of the ride.
When we got home, he got out first after parking. I followed him upstairs. He walked straight ahead, stopping only when he reached his door.
"Do you need anything else?" he asked coldly, hand on the doorknob.
"Uhm, right now? Nothing." I forced a smile.
He stared at me for a moment, then went inside his room. I pursed my lips after he shut the door, then did the same—going into my own room.
While I was in the shower, I remembered the anger in his eyes. If I were a man, he probably would've punched or beaten me already because he wanted out of this house so badly.
The next day, I didn't see him. He had his car brought over, so now I was going to school alone.
My gaze was cold as I looked at the cars ahead. I wasn't in a good mood. I didn't know if it was a hangover from the embarrassment I felt from what he said yesterday.
I rolled down the windows, frowning at the cars in front of me. I wanted to ram into the slow drivers ahead. I exhaled in boredom, then grinned as I thought of something reckless.
"Yeah!" I laughed after my car reached maximum speed.
I overtook the cars ahead like I was in a race. I could barely hear their loud honking because of how fast I was going. I even heard someone call my name.
I bit my lip when I saw the stoplight. Just a few more seconds and the red light would come on. My lips parted, my chest pounding like crazy. The traffic light became my finish line.
Almost there!
I was screaming inside.
I floored the accelerator right as I passed the intersection, missing the cross traffic by milliseconds. I screamed, laughing as I slapped the steering wheel.
"I won! Woooh! I love my life!" I laughed and cranked the stereo to max.
I sang along, laughing, one hand out the window.
Lucas was right. I don't want to be reprimanded. I didn't care about anything else as long as I was having fun. My mindset was different from other girls'. I enjoyed the wild. I enjoyed the trouble. No man would want to marry me. No man would want to spend his life with me. I laughed loudly, shaking my head.
"I don't need you all!" I shouted out the open window. "All men are the same! You're all sons of bitches!"
I laughed because I could barely hear myself over the blaring music inside the car. I didn't actually have a problem with men; I just wanted to shout. Even if he was right, I just played with them. I didn't need men in my life anyway.
"No one wants your opinion!" I shouted along with the song. "f**k you! f**k you very, very much!"
I laughed at the lyrics, sticking my hand out the window, showing the world my middle finger.
"f**k you, Lucas! All women you know may be modest, but I'm kinder!" I shook my head and lowered the volume because I was nearing the school.
When I got out of my car, I spotted Lucas's car pulling in. He hadn't even fully parked when his door flew open. He got out, slamming it shut, furious.
"Are you trying to kill yourself?!" he yelled as he came toward me. "I saw how you were driving! What if you got into an accident or caused one?"
I laughed and raised my brow at him. His face was flushed red with anger. He was probably the one I heard calling my name earlier.
He kept walking toward me while I backed away, facing him but walking backward to keep my distance.
"Sorry, Daddy! It won't happen again!"
I grinned at him.
"Lucienne!"
"Don't wanna be called Daddy? Alright. Sorry, Attorney!" I saluted him with a wink, then turned my back on him.
