Chapter 1: The Blood-Soaked Vow
[Aria's POV]
My name is Aria.
I'm an Omega. The lowest of the lows. An invisible orphan in the formidable Blackwood Shadow Pack.
I stood at the edge of the sacred altar, my body trembling, though I couldn't tell if it was from the biting cold or the crippling anxiety twisting in my gut.
That night. It was only a month ago, but the memory was seared into my soul. His scent—a sharp, clean fragrance of a forest after a storm—and the scorching heat of his skin as he lost control... It was a brand on my very being.
He'll remember, Aria, my wolf, Selene, whispered in my mind. Her own voice trembled with a fragile hope. I felt the spark of our bond that night. It wasn't fake.
But... I countered, the bitterness a familiar taste on my tongue. He's an Alpha, Selene. I'm just an Omega. That night... it was probably just an instinct he couldn't suppress. An accident.
I didn't dare look at him, at Damien, our Alpha, who stood like a king among wolves. I was terrified of seeing the disgust and forgetfulness in his eyes.
To be his mate? The thought was both honey and poison, a sweet fantasy that made the waking world a torment. All my hopes and all my fears hung suspended on the ray of moonlight that was about to seal my fate.
Just then, the Prophetess, Elara, raised the Moon Staff high in the center of the altar.
“Oh, great Moon Goddess!” her voice boomed, echoing in the silent night. “Guide our powerful Alpha, Damien, to his destined mate!”
Every wolf fell silent, their heads tilted towards the velvet sky. A full moon hung there, pristine and divine.
I lowered my head, my heart hammering so violently against my ribs I thought it would break free. My destiny was about to be declared.
Aria, look! The moonlight! Selene’s voice suddenly erupted with ecstatic joy.
My head snapped up.
A silver waterfall of light poured down from the heavens. It cut through the crowd, bypassed the noble-blooded Omegas, and landed, with unerring precision, directly on me.
It didn't feel cold. Instead, a strange warmth enveloped me, a gentle, soothing embrace. My trembling ceased, and a wave of unprecedented peace and power surged through my limbs.
I was stunned.
Pure, unadulterated ecstasy shot through me like a lightning bolt, stealing my breath. The wolves around me were equally frozen, their initial scorn morphed into pure, unadulterated shock.
It's us! Aria! The Moon Goddess chose us! Selene howled with glee in the depths of my soul.
My heart was a wild drum in my chest. I watched him, the man they called the "Shadow of Blackwood," the cold and ruthless Alpha, rise from his throne. He moved towards me, step by deliberate step.
He was immense, his tailored black suit accentuating his handsome, authoritative presence. His obsidian eyes were like the winter night sky, impossible to read. With every step, the very air seemed to crystallize around him.
Him.
My Mate.
My Alpha.
My wolf sang. My blood boiled. I clenched my fists, my knuckles white, waiting for him to take my hand and accept the Goddess's blessing.
But then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw the Prophetess Elara on the altar.
There was no joy on her face, no sign of a blessing. Only deep, profound terror and a grim resolve. She looked at Damien and gave a tiny, almost imperceptible shake of her head.
Her lips moved, forming two silent words.
I read them clear as day.
“For the pack.”
My heart plummeted. The soaring ecstasy of a moment ago was instantly replaced by an icy dread.
Damien stopped in front of me. His scent, that intoxicating aroma of a rain-washed forest, surrounded me completely. The scent that should have been my comfort now felt like a cage of ice.
He didn't take my hand.
He simply looked down at me, his gaze as cold and distant as if he were looking at an inanimate object.
And then, he spoke.
His voice, every single word, was a blade of ice, plunging deep into my heart.
“I, Damien, Alpha of the Blackwood Shadow Pack.”
“Before the Moon Goddess and all my pack members.”
“I reject you, Aria, as my mate, my Luna.”
Boom.
My mind went utterly blank.
“I refuse this bond and sever all connections between us.”
“From this moment on, you have nothing to do with me, or with the Blackwood Shadow Pack.”
A sharp crack, like shattering glass, exploded in the depths of my soul.
NO! Selene shrieked, a sound of pure agony.
Pain!
An indescribable agony tore through me. It felt as if an invisible hand had seized my heart and ripped it in two. The sensation of my soul being forcibly torn away made my vision go black, my lungs unable to draw air. The moonlight that had once felt so warm now burned my skin like a branding iron.
I could hear the whispers around me.
“By the Goddess, the Alpha rejected the Moon’s choice?”
“That poor Omega... How humiliating.”
“To be rejected in front of everyone. She’s finished.”
I looked at Damien, his handsome face still a mask of indifference. He had spoken his vow of rejection and turned to leave without a shred of hesitation, as if he had just completed some trivial chore.
My body could no longer support me. My knees buckled, and I collapsed heavily onto the ground.
My vision was blurred. Before darkness completely consumed me, I saw a flicker of relief—and a hint of pity—cross the Prophetess Elara's ancient face.
I woke to the brutal sensation of being dragged.
I was no longer at the altar. Two large Beta guards were hauling me across the cold stone path, heading towards the edge of the territory. My ceremonial dress was torn and caked with dirt.
“Let me go...” my voice was a raw, weak whisper.
“Shut it, reject Omega,” one of the guards spat in disgust. The Alpha has ordered your exile. You should be grateful he didn’t kill you on the spot”.
They threw me out like a piece of trash, just beyond the pack's boundary line.
This was the wilderness, the entrance to the forest, the dangerous domain of Rogues.
The guards turned and left, and the cold iron gate slowly swung shut in front of me.
“If you ever dare set foot in the Blackwood Shadow territory again, you will be killed on sight.”
I curled up on the cold ground, my body convulsing with the aftershocks of the broken bond. My wolf, Selene, had fallen into a deep slumber. No matter how I called her, there was no response.
I was rejected by my Alpha.
I was abandoned by my pack.
I had nothing left.
Despair, a cold tide, threatened to drown me. I closed my eyes, letting the chill seep into my bones. Perhaps dying here would be a kind of release.
Just as my consciousness began to fade again—
A flutter.
Deep within my abdomen, I felt a faint, yet impossibly clear, stirring.
The feeling... it was like the gentle beat of a tiny butterfly's wings.
My eyes shot open. I pressed a hand against my flat stomach, disbelief warring with a wild, burgeoning hope.
There… there was a life inside me.
It was Damien's… and it was mine.
My Moon Goddess!
I was pregnant.
