Chapter 4 - Bonny

2331 Words
Leaving Finn with a final kiss goodbye, Kara leaves to meet Laurie at her house. Although Laurie is a bit smaller than Kara, her clothes still mostly fit and Kara needed to change out of her old clothes. When Kara arrives she just walks in and heads straight to Laurie’s room. Laurie turns to her and makes a funny face, “sooo you decided to get with Finn, hmmm?!” Kara laughs a little, “We decided to get together, Laurie. We didn’t do anything.” Laurie just giggles and points to her closet. Kara goes through it and finds an outfit - basically just jeans and a t-shirt. Laurie looks up and her eyes go wide. “Oh honey, no no no,” she comes over and gently moves Kara away from the closet, “tonight is a big game for the boys! You need to be dressed in your very best Stallion pride attire!” Kara sighed. Laurie was the embodiment of school pride. As one of the co-head cheerleaders, she felt it was her duty to “put some sparkle in people’s lives”. As Laurie busied herself in the closet, Kara sat on her bed. “Plus, now you’re dating a team captain of senior varsity. You are practically required to show your pride every Friday.” She gasped and turned around, holding several options, “ohmigod we HAVE to go shopping now!!” She squealed and turned back around, continuing her search. Suddenly she dropped everything, grabbing a single item, then slowly turned, revealing the dress to Kara with a huge grin. “Okay, no. That’s basically a cheer uniform. I’m not wearing that.” Kara protests. “Oh yes you are!! Girl, it is perfect.” Laurie says. And she was right, their school colors were crimson red, gold, and white. She was holding a short, sleeveless, crimson lace dress, with sparkly white lining underneath, and a shiny gold belt that went around the waist and tied into a bow in the back. “Okay I’ll admit it would be a great pride outfit and it’s adorable but that’s not something you can just put on and go. I’d need to do hair and makeup and we just really don’t have the time.” Kara counters. “Leave it to me. I got you! I can’t tell you how many times one of the girls was late before a game and I had to do their hair in less than ten minutes and when we’re performing, you know we gotta be no less than a straight 10 out there.” Kara laughed, “okay fine.” “YES!” Laurie threw the dress at Kara and begins arranging her makeup and hair products. She quickly curls Kara’s long reddish brown locks, then does her makeup in what she called a “natural” look - although the look was something Kara would wear to a fancy event. Laurie finished Kara’s makeup and then jumped to her feet, “just a couple more things...” Kara looks at the clock, “Laurie, I know you live close to the school but if we don’t leave in the next five minutes-” As Kara turned to face Laurie she was met by what could only be defined as a glitter bomb. Laurie was holding a jar of glitter and had grabbed a handful, and just as Kara turned around she threw the glitter up, letting it rain down on Kara. “Oh...my...” “Wait! I’m not done!” Laurie ran back to her dresser and came back with a gold ribbon, then quickly tied it in Kara’s hair, fastening it into a high half-ponytail. Then she reached around and spritz perfume all over Kara. It actually smelled wonderful, like sandalwood and eucalyptus. “There. Now I’m done.” Laurie said smiling at her work. “I’m gonna have glitter in my Jeep forever.” Kara smiled and winked then turned, “come on, we gotta go, like right now!” Laurie gave her a pair of white ballet flats to wear and then trotted out after her and jumped in the passenger side of the Jeep. As they drive to the school, Laurie pulled some Clorox wipes out of her purse and started scrubbing some spots on her practically perfect white shoes. The cheerleaders at the school were like movie stars, they were highly esteemed and were held to even higher standards. They pulled into the parking lot and there he was - Finn, next to his sleek black, 1967 Chevy Impala. It had been his uncles but he died in a war, with Finn’s father next to him. Finn’s uncle left everything he had to him and his mom. Finn was wearing black slacks with a black belt and his jersey tucked into his pants. He was leaning against his car, talking to his friends with the cheerleaders all trying to be by their side. The only students who were higher regarded than the cheer team were the football players. As soon as Finn saw Kara’s Jeep he stood up straight and his smile doubled in size. She pulled into a parking spot a few down from his and she and Laurie got out. Laurie sashayed over to her cheer friends and Kara slowly walked up to Finn, who gawked at the sight of her. “I know...it’s a bit much, huh? Laurie said I had to-” then Finn cut her off. “Baby you look stunning!” He picked her up and spun her around, and when he did so she happened to notice several dirty looks from the direction of the cheerleaders. He kissed her deeply and when he pulled away he whispered, “are you feeling better from this morning?” “Oh! Yeah. I’m okay.” She smiled. “Okay. Cause I need my girl to feel twice as good as she looks.” He winked at her. Kara just shook her head and smiled as he grabbed her hand and pulled to over to his friends to introduce her. They all walked together into the school and finally went their separate ways. School went exceptionally well, since Kara was constantly getting complimented on her attire. She even had a sophomore ask if she was a new cheerleader. By the end of the day, Kara was pretty exhausted. She barely slept at all and then had a very stimulating day. Laurie was busy with a last minute rehearsal and the football team usually spent the whole afternoon getting ready for the game (whatever that actually meant). So she and Dani went and grabbed a bite to eat and then hung out in the grass near the football field. As they were lounging, Dani finally decided to question her about the previous night. Kara told her about how she and Finn made dinner and then fell asleep watching a movie but she woke up because of another crazy dream and it woke Finn too. Dani asked what it was about and Kara took a deep breath, then told her, and also about the Carl dream. “That’s super scary! Maybe they’re some kind of warning?” Dani said. “Warning?? Like what?” Kara replied. “Oh I have no idea. Maybe the blonde one could be a warning about getting too wrapped up in that,” she pointed to Kara’s outfit, “don’t get me wrong you look stunning, but you and I both know that scene can be crazy toxic. That’s why Laurie keeps a good long distance from all those girls.” “Well I mean, I’m not trying to be a cheerleader. I honestly don’t even see what everyone else sees, like...I just put on a dress and Laurie dolled me up, you know?” Kara took a breath and shook her head, “I just want be with Finn. That’s all.” “Well maybe that’s it!” Dani sat up straight and crossed her legs, “you did have that lovely blip of your future with Finn before you found the blonde girl. Maybe your subconscious is worried about your future with Finn?” Kara shook her head, “I dunno, Dani. Then what about the Carl dream?” Dani thought for a second, “well Carl’s always been pretty absent. Maybe somewhere deep down you compare him to...” she trails off. “My birth mother?” Kara finished her abandoned sentence. “I don’t know. Maybe. I’ve never thought about it, honestly. I try not to.” As the comfortable silence sets in, the sun starts to go down and cars start to arrive, marking Dani and Kara’s que to head to the bleachers for a good spot. As the crowd starts to pile in, Kara spots a familiar face jogging towards her. “Finn!” She runs to him, and he lifts her up and kisses her. Now in full football gear he puts something in her hand. “Here. It’s my good luck charm. I usually leave it on the bench while I play but I thought maybe my new good luck charm could hold onto it for me?” She opens her hand and sees a necklace with a Celtic eternity tree emblem, one of his most prized possessions and a family heirloom. She gave it to him and gathered her hair up, then turned around so he could put it on her. He carefully put it on her and then turned her around as she let her hair fall. He grins at her, “It suits you.” “We’ll be rooting for you. Now go on, make us proud.” She pulled him in for a kiss and he deepened it then gave her several short kisses and ran off. Kara smiled and walked back to Dani. As she sat down, the marching band started playing as walked out onto the field. They did a quick performance and then formed a tunnel. First, the cheer team ran out in a flurry of flips and cartwheels. They ran up right in front of the crowd and did a quick cheer, getting the crowd hyped up. Then they ran back to extend the tunnel from the band. The band starting playing and the cheer team put their arms in the air, shaking their pom-poms. Then came tonight’s main event- the football team. Finn ran out first, with the other three team captains, and the crowd cheered loudly. Once the boys were on the field, the cheer squad jogged to their position on the track and the marching band found their location on the bleachers. The first quarter went quite well, with their team leading by 14 points. The second quarter they gained another 3 points, while the opposition had secured 10 in the quarter. Then finally the quarter ended and it was halftime, beginning with a quick show from Star, the stallion- their mascot. “Come on, let’s run to the bathroom real quick.” Kara said to Dani. They took off and found the restroom, then as they were heading back, Kara ran into someone. “Oh! I’m sorry!” She looked up and saw a man, she thought probably in his early to mid twenties. He had black hair and green eyes, not short but not very tall either, maybe an inch taller than her...and strikingly handsome “Ahh, that would be my fault, lass. My apologies.” He had a strong Irish accent. Kara nods at him and then turned to walk away, then he spoke again, “pardon me, I’m new to town. Could you tell me where I might find my way back to the home side? This crowd is quite large and I seem to have gotten turned around.” Dani smiled and Kara looked at her, then back to the man, “well sure!” They walked together back towards the bleachers. “So you’re new to town, huh? What’s your name?” Kara said, to fill the time of the walk. “My name is Connor. And yours, my good lady?” He said smiling. “My name is Kara,” she gestured towards Dani, who waved at him, “and this is one of my best friends, Dani.” “Lovely to meet you, lassies.” Connor said. “What brings you to California?” Dani says. “Ahh, it’s a long story. My little sister and I moved here a little over a week ago.” “That doesn’t seem so long,” Kara says. “Aye, the reason isn’t, but the story is.” He looks at them with a smirk, then looks back forward as they reach the bleachers, “well, lassies, I guess this is the end of the road.” He bows his head and smiles, “been a pleasure! Thanks for the walk.” As he’s walking away something compels Kara to call out. “Wait! Connor!” He turns slowly and nods, “your sister...does she go to this school? If she needs some friends, we’re happy to show her around!” He smiles as Kara and Dani run up the bleachers to him. “Oh aye. You see over there,” he pointed to the band, “you see the bonny redhead with the...what d’ye call it...colorguard?” “Yeah, colorguard, the flag team.” Kara said. “Well that would be her. Shannon.” “Well uh, we’ll have to introduce ourselves to her!” Kara smiled and looked at Dani, who was nodding along but giving Kara a weird look. “That would be verra nice! You are kind. I think my sister would be smart to find friendship with you.” He smiled kindly, “well I best be going. See you around.” Then he walked off into the crowd of the bleachers. With halftime ending, people were beginning to find their seats, so Kara and Dani did the same. “So uh, are we gonna talk about you being all weird around Mr. Bonny Lad?” Dani says with a smirk. “No. No we are not.” Kara said, “I just...I dunno I felt drawn to him.” Dani laughed and shook her head. As the team ran back out, Finn found Kara and met her eyes, then blew a kiss to her. She grinned and acted like she caught it. Then she gently touched the necklace and thought to herself, come good luck charm. Give it all you’ve got! The rest of the game went amazing and the Stallions ended up winning by a long shot. Kara and Dani found Laurie and then Finn and some friends found them. “Hey!!” He hugged Kara and kissed her, making James wince and pretend to gag, “we’re going to go get a bite to eat and celebrate! You girls coming?” “Yeah!” All three of them said together. Then, Kara paused and looked around until she found her target, “just one thing before we go.” She found the bonny redheaded girl helping the band pack up, and went to introduce herself.
