Chapter 1
Clarissa questioned Hazel as they both looked at an old photograph, "Do you still remember him?"
The picture was taken six years prior and featured Axel, the Alpha's youngest son.
Hazel replied, "Of course, I remember him.
She would never be able to easily forget him. He had been by her side throughout her entire childhood and even through her adolescence, but she had never had a good experience with him. However, since bad memories were harder to get rid of, she never forgot him.
He must now be a man.
Yes, she said, "and a tease like he always was," to Clarissa's chuckle.
Clarissa, the best friend of Hazel and the daughter of the recently installed beta, was the late beta's daughter.
Clarissa surmised, "He would have grown out of it."
Hazel shook her head and turned the picture book, saying, "I don't think so.
She whispered, "I do not want to stare too much at his annoying face, it irritates me," and Clarissa laughed again.
He was polite to everyone, but with you, I think he really liked you, he was different.
He certainly despised me, always making things difficult for me, Hazel thought.
Hazel ended the conversation by saying, "No more talks about him," as memories of him began to flood her mind.
He had bullied her as a child. Others might have thought that he was just being playful with her rather than tormenting her, but Hazel saw it all as bullying.
About six years ago, he moved away, and she was still grateful to the heavens for that favor.
"The Alpha is getting old, and he would need someone to take over the position of the Alpha, so do you think there is a chance that he will return home soon?"
Rex is the first offspring of the Alpha, and he is sufficient; Axel doesn't need to return home ever.
Clarissa replied, "Well, well. That is what you say since you have a great crush on Rex.
Hazel had affections for Rex, the Alpha's eldest son, for years.
Rex was totally different from his brother Axel. With her, Rex was kind and composed. He never made hurtful remarks or relentlessly teased her, like Axel would constantly do.
Hazel could only hold out the utmost hope that she might prove to be Rex's undiscovered mate.
Clarissa murmured, "I heard rumors that Axel might be coming back soon."
What, really? Are you kidding me right now?
Clarissa made a shrug.
"I only heard about it from the others"
Hazel put down the picture book and turned to face her buddy, "It would better stay a rumor. But wait a minute... Why do you keep hearing about everything when I barely hear about anything?"
Sighing, Clarissa.
Clarissa was honest when she stated, "You know the reason behind it, Hazel. The others think it is weird that you are 24 and still haven't shape-shifted."
One thing about Clarissa was that she never bothered to lie, even if it would hurt.
She said, "They're isolating you, Hazel," and Hazel bit her lip.
She sprang up from the edge of the bed and made her way to the window, where she just stood there and stared.
She had been worried about it for a very long time because, unlike others, she had not experienced a shape shift until she was 24 years old.
Clarissa held her right hand and gave it a soft squeeze as she comforted her, "You do not have to feel too bad. You can always be assured that I will never isolate you."
Hazel spoke barely above a whisper, "The rumor that I might be a human is still out there, right?"
Clarissa gave a nod of agreement.
I at least know that you are a wolf, not simply a human.
Hazel sighed and turned to face the window once more.
Hazel murmured, "I mean... I doubt that myself as well. It is fine if they all doubt me being a wolf."
Hazel closed her eyes as Clarissa murmured, "Never doubt yourself."
"I might actually be driven into the world of humans,"
She recalled how everyone had been anticipating her to finally shift on her seventeenth birthday, but she had been unable to do so.
Everyone had been patiently waiting for her to change shifts up until this point, six years later.
I am sure you are going to turn out to be a powerful wolf. Powerful wolves take a long time before having their first shift, so don't think about it. Our world, Wolfbrim, is your world too. You do not belong to the human world. If you were human, how would you get into Wolfbrim in the first place? Clarissa rubbed her shoulder consolingly.
While keeping her eyes closed, Hazel nodded.
Hazel opened her eyes when Clarissa prodded her, saying, "Come on, don't let this ruin your mood, let's go out for some practice."
Hazel laughed, attempting to brighten her own mood. "You are going to beat me up anyway," she said.
With a wink, Clarissa said, "You might be lucky today," and she dragged Hazel out the door.
Even though everyone was leaving her, Clarissa remained loyal to her in every circumstance, which made Hazel smile a little.
Although Hazel wasn't as strong as Clarissa, she was unquestionably not the weakest member of the group.
While Hazel hoped for it, she was quickly losing hope as Clarissa was certain that Hazel's strength would manifest with her first shape shift.
Clarissa ran into a maid while dragging her along. Her smile quickly vanished, and she quickly developed a nasty expression.
She gave the maid a strong slap in less than a second, sending her falling to the floor.
The maid immediately fell to her knees and begged for compassion, saying, "I'm sorry. I'm really sorry. Please don't kill me."
Clarissa inhaled deeply and exhaled just as deeply.
She scoffed, "I will be merciful to you this once, disgusting wolf," and strode off while dragging Hazel behind her.
Hazel turned around and looked at the maid as she wiped away her tears.
The maid was a wolf as well, but she belonged to another pack. The maid came from a group of white wolves that they had subdued and captured for nearly 24 years.
The white wolf pack and the dark wolf pack had been at odds with one another for some time prior to 24 years ago. This hostility resulted in a conflict that the white wolf pack ultimately lost.
The black wolf members used the white wolf members as slaves, servants, and maids. They were even worse than the dark wolf pack's omegas.
They spent their entire lives being treated like slaves, but Hazel found it difficult to do so.
Even though she had attempted to treat people like trash in order to fit in, she had never been able to accomplish that, which she could not understand.
When Hazel and Clarissa at last arrived at the practice area, Clarissa immediately assumed a combat stance.
When her phone beeped to remind her that she still had it in her pockets, Hazel was about to do the same.
She murmured, "Just a minute," to Clarissa before taking the phone out of her pocket.
Even though it was a communication from an unknown contact, Hazel opened it nevertheless.
"Good morning, pretty head. How are you doing?"
She gasped, dividing her lips. She was only referred to as having a lovely head by one individual.
Axel.
Hazel's eyes were glued to the message she had just read; she was unable to take them off of it.
After six years, why did he suddenly message her?
She whispered "Gosh" as she recalled what Clarissa had just said regarding the rumor that he wanted to come back.
Clarissa inquired, observing the expression on Hazel's face, "What's wrong?"
Hazel answered with a simple "Nothing" and grinned at Clarissa.
She continued, "I'll just drop my phone," and moved a short distance away to do so.
Another message appeared just as she was ready to drop her phone. She opened the message once more with some hesitation.
The message stated, "How do I look now, pretty head?" and had a photo of him.
Hazel sighed and kept staring at the image of him. He was no longer the young adult she recalled; he had truly grown into a man.
He had undergone significant facial change, and the expression on his face in the photograph was not the tense one he had been flashing her for his entire life. It was a matured expression, and she hated to confess that it was not only mature but also hot.
Clarissa complained, "What are you still doing with your phone?"
Hazel was certain that she would have been fixated on that image of him for several minutes if Clarissa had not called out to her, "Nothing. Just a second."
She deactivated his contact and put her phone down, as she had vowed to do if he ever got in touch with her again.
Clarissa was curious about the message and said, "What was it about the message? You seemed quite surprised."
Hazel brushed off the matter by saying, "It's just some spam."
Days later
Hazel was now in her house, in her room, staring at his photo on her phone while holding it in her hands.
No, she was not smitten with him, but she was in awe of how much he had changed over the years and could not hide it.
She stood up from her bed, setting down the phone, and walked over to her mirror, recognizing that she had changed much as well, in addition to how much he had changed.
She had grown considerably since she was a young girl six years prior.
She was not going to allow him to mistreat her any longer, even if he returned, because she had also developed significantly.
Her thoughts immediately went back to their final exchange.
Flashback
Axel told Hazel, "I'm leaving this night.
In Hazel's room, he had his back against the wall and appeared to be completely at ease.
Though Hazel remained silent in reaction to his remarks, she was overjoyed that he was finally departing.
He looked at her and said, "Say something, pretty head. You do not want me to leave?"
Her voice was cautious as she said, "No, I want you to leave, and you know that.
Axel inquired and stepped away from the wall, approaching Hazel who was sitting on the sofa in the room. "You really want me to leave?"
She said, "Yes," allowing her sight to avert to the ground.
But do you realize how much you'll miss me, he questioned.
She vowed, "I... I won't miss you. In fact, I'll never want you back."
His right brow shot up, "Why?"
I don't want you around me anymore because you've always been controlling. When you leave, I will finally have the freedom I've always desired, be able to go on dates and put myself first, and then I'll change and meet my soul mate, and then.
Without warning, he abruptly put his hand around her neck, drew her close, and kissed her lips to silence her.
Hazel tensed up physically. His lips touched her own, and she instantly went cold.
The last thing she had anticipated happening in her life was what really did.
He drew nearer to her, easing them into a much more favorable and cozy posture.
He slowly sucked on her lips as his lips opened and he slipped her bottom lip between his own. His lips were all over hers as he gave her a gentle kiss, yet they matched hers in every way.
As his tongue caressed her lips, Hazel could feel her heart racing. Being given her first kiss by him was meant to be a nightmare, yet to her, this gentle kiss seemed anything but a nightmare.
Instead of the nightmare she had expected, she felt her body relaxing and melting.
While breaking the kiss and pulling away from her, Axel kept his eyes fixed on her moist lips.
He backed away from her and stood up straight, then his grin emerged.
Hazel jumped up from the sofa and yelled at him, "What did you just do?!".
He appeared to be perfectly content with himself as evidenced by the sneer that was still on his lips. "You were talking too much, pretty head. I had to shut you up."
She pointed at him with her index finger, expecting him to hit it away as usual when she did, but this time it was different.
He took hold of her wrist and covered one of her fingers with his mouth, sucking.
When Hazel realized this, her eyes widened. She attempted to push him away but was helpless against him.
He eventually released his hold on her finger as she wailed, "Stop, what are you doing?"
Her brows furrowed, "What is wrong with you today?"
