Ista
Ista awakens to a whistling breeze, breaking it's way through an opening in the birch bark sheet. A small pile of crisp autumn leafs pressed into the floor. Her fire smouldered, leaving the faint aroma of cedarwood that had nearly been chased away, by the night wind. She crawled over to the entrance sliding the bark sheet back into place. Then she tossed another piece of dried timber onto the glowing red embers. Laying back on to her bed. She could hear hollowing in the distance. Oh how she loved the call of the wolves. It softly whispered in her ears. She thought of how one day she would find love. Hoping that love would comfort her as the hollowing does. Tonight the hollowing seemed to last forever. She had never been more at peace. As she drifted off into the arms of her dreams. She found herself sitting on a green moss covered falling tree. Beneath her hands she could feel the fibers course through ever finger. Each bristol tickling more than the last. Soft plush bunches came lose in her grasp. Bringing them slowly to her nose smelling the earthly bundle. Pieces began to drop between her fingers. The softness became gritty and dry. Brushing her hands together she lifted herself from the falling giant. Her toes gently pressed into the floor of thin pine needles. Looking up and sheet of darkness cast over her, by giant red cedars. Their canvass soothing as the forrest was her play ground. Protecting her from the darkness. She could smell the fresh water from a near by lake. Drawn to the waters edge she walked, with each step her world became brighter. Reaching the edge of the forrest the lake came into view. Something was different about the water. As she got closer it lost it's familiar odor. Instead there was a thick metallic taste in the air. Her steps became slower and shorter. As fear rushed through her veins. The lake seemed to be folding up around her. The ground beneath her collapsing. She stood frozen unable to move. As the lake became vertical moving towards her. She could see the forrest behind her and she could see herself staring motionless in it's reflection. The wall of water nearly engulfing her, stopped. As it reached her face. Her reflection glared back at her. Her heart beat racing she reached out. The water scolded her, burning her fingertips. Immediately the sound of crashing trees woke her. Peering from her wigwam. The canopy above her ripped open by. The burnt night sky a trail of fire lite the canopy a blaze. Lake below her erupted with a plunge! Steaming molten water expelled flew across the valley high as the eyes could see. It eclipsed the moon drowning her light briefly creating total darkness. Hot metal pebbles landed everywhere. Many of the villagers had awoke before her. Their confusion was almost a frightening as the impact in the lake. Mother's clung to their children. Men turned away from the immense heat of the dense steam. As the wall spread throughout their village. It was distinguished by the giant cedars. Many of the trees boiled and bubbled under the impact the wave. Shielding the villagers from certain and complete devastation. As Ista dream had ended the real nightmare had began. Wolves came running from the deep forest. Many of them covered in boils being badly burned. Patches of their hair falling from their coats. Were caught on branches bushes limbs of the trees and large roots. Villagers fleas to their wigwams. In fear of the animals. Ista still peering from her doorway. Watched as wolves fell one after another in the flattened reeds their whimpers replaced the sounds of their hollows. Her heart bleed through her eyes as she imagined the pain of the helpless animals. As she approached the edge of the village. She saw a few men standing staring at the horrific scene before them. She could here them discussing what to do for or with the wolves or to the wolves. It was hard for her to keep her thoughts together. She was weary the air was thick with settling fog... Mishke, the one she knew as the slow hunter. Spoke his words were deep and slow. "We have to put them out of their misery." Many of them men agreed with Mishke. A few others gave supporting reasonings. They will poison the lake water with there corpses. Another suggested that they bury the the animals. Far from the tribe so scavenger's won't dig them up or be close to the village. Ista spoke up saying " We can try and help them" Mishke replied " We are they are wild and would attack us as soon as we got close enough". Then, three of the wolves began to rise and walk around limping walking towards the lake. Mishke drew back his bow. Ista closed her eyes. she could hear the ripping of the arrows quills as it tore through the dense fog. Then with a thud she heard. The first of the wolves tumble to the ground. Then with what seemed like only seconds. She heard no more whimpers or pain. Ista could feel her happiness fleeing from her soul. The only thing she could her was the cascading of tears as the fell from her cheeks. She know that the songs they had sang would never be heard with her ears. Her tears dropped to the ground. Collapsing to her knees her tears pinging off each other, she looked and they had became tiny silver pebbles. As she collapsed further to the ground she rolled to her side. Looking back to her wigwam. Only to see many of the tribes people folded over puking out piles of silver. Then her eyes closed.
