Prologue

Some say that money doesn't buy happiness, but that it's better to cry in a castle than to cry in a cave, if I could just find a nice cave to hide in though. I am currently wearing an expensive blue dress worth a lot of money and it actually feels like I rented it, no pun intended. I am also wearing a small diamond necklace along with it's diamond stud earrings, running away in expensive heels from the man who gifted me all of them. You may ask why I don't lose or get rid of them since I'm running away from the man who gifted me them, while my hands held on to the edges of my dress because it wasn't comfortable to run in? Nope, because I am much smarter than that and not in the way you think. Now the thing is, if I end of loosing any one of the things on my body no matter how small, then Edwin Vincent will use it track to me with his wolf senses in this wide never ending forest and although he already knows my scent, it's always good to be extra cautious right? So I keep running. The sky was getting dark as the sun slowly went down and I could barely see it's deep red orange hue as it settled west of the sky due to the tall trees that surrounded the forest. I ran and ran, never looking back till I fell out of breath and I stopped. I looked down at my feet taking deep pants and noticed how my shoes have caused a lot of bruises on my feet, they dug into my feet uncomfortably while I was running but I had to ignore the pain since my life was at risk. And for a moment I felt like removing them and at least hold them in my hands, but what if I step on something sharp and can't even run anymore? If only I could shift into a wolf right now to help me run faster, but the last time my wolf talked to me was about a month ago, coupled with the fact that I have never shifted before even though I am now twenty one years old. I bowed down grabbing my knees feeling exhausted and the huge mahogany tree to my right looked so inviting that for a moment I felt like loosing my guard and just sitting down under it's cool shade and leaning on the hard wood as I regained my energy but I can't risk having my scent on anything here or risk falling asleep and getting caught. Getting up, I looked around the forest, it was now getting darker that I could barely distinguish between the rocks, leaves and sharp broken branches on the ground, my blue dress was now soaked in sweat making it feel itchy and uncomfortable. I wiped the sweat on my forehead and looked left and right. For a second, I was confused as to where I should keep going but I remembered that I only needed to keep going forward, and I do just that, I kept running ahead as far as I could from Lord Edwin Vincent's villa. As far as I am concerned, nobody would look for me until it was time for dinner and according to the sky, that has already gotten dark I only have about one hour left before the maid goes to my room to get me ready for dinner with Edwin Vincent. Well good luck dressing up an empty room you devils! * I must have been running for an hour now and my legs felt too week to keep running, my hair was in disarray and it has gotten so dark I could barely see what's in front of me. My dress, now wet with my sweat didn't help me with the fact that the night was getting chilly with the trees blowing wind in every direction and I shivered, not just from the cold but for the fact that I was in a forest all by myself. I squatted on the ground, too exhausted to keep standing and I couldn't help but remember my life back at the villa. For the few weeks I lived there, there was nothing but luxury. The silk bed, the fine satin, chiffon and silky clothes, the warm fire, and oh the delicious food, just the thought of it made my stomach growl, I smiled at the memory of what I was now missing and for a second I actually looked behind me with a small smile on my face and just as I did turn, his face flashed in my eyes, and I quickly cringed. No! I cannot look back or think of going to that place again, that man is only after my life and all the privilege I had was in exchange for it. Getting up, I started walking, unable to run this time and I winced at the cramps I felt in my legs. The forest was now getting scarier, Edwin Vincent had told me that there were no animals in this forest and I actually believed him, just like everything that came out of his mouth. Shiny golden mane of hair, bright blue eyes and a smile all so innocent, who would have thought that a man like that is making deals with the devil. I hugged my arms to myself and kept walking and I could swear I kept hearing weird sounds and seeing movements out of the corners of my eye but I refused to let the fear get into me, I'd rather be in this situation than sit and wait till my killer decided when I was to die. Just then I heard a branch snapped behind me and I halted in my steps, my breathing halted and my heart beat so fast and so loud against my ribcage it felt like it would burst out open and I felt a cold sweat broke out from my forehead down to my face. What could possibly be behind me? I thought there was no one else in this forest. It was quiet after the sound but then, it could be my imagination but I heard footsteps slowly approaching me from behind and I wondered how I was able to hear it over the loud beating of my heart. My eyes, just like like the rest of my body were too scared to move and I felt as if I was no longer in control of my own body, that was until I felt something so soft but much harder than the wind slowly crawl on my back and without a second thought I sprinted. Until then I had no idea I had any energy left in me but apparently, fear brings out all the strength inside of you and I ran like an athlete never for once trying to look back until I felt myself hit something so hard with a loud thump, the pain on my forehead was the first thing that registered through my body before I fell on my butt. I didn't even know which pain I should deal with first, and I felt myself get angry of what ever kind of tree it is that got in my way and I looked up. Even though it was dark and I could barely see what was in front of me, I was very sure no tree was this wide and smooth, especially with no leaves. Maybe I hit my head too hard? Getting up and dusting my hands I put my hands on the wall in front of me and started following it to see were it would lead me. But what is a wall doing in the middle of a forest? Could this possibly be a house? I felt relieved at the possibility and kept following the wall and I could feel some parts of the wall had rough edges and after rounding a corner, I heaved a sigh of relief when I felt myself touching some wood and I ran my hands all over it, after making sure it was indeed a door from the shape of it, I searched for a handle or a knob or at least a door knocker but felt none of it I can remember neither feeling a window either. Now is this some kind of joke or something? A door without an opener? Maybe I should just leave and keep walking, but the growling of my stomach and the cramps in my leg protested highly against that so I raised my hand and knocked. At first my knocks were soft as if I was going easy on the door but the wind blowing so hard on me made me shiver so much I didn't know when I started knocking hareder. And just when I was starting to lose hope, I heard some movement from inside so I stopped knocking and hoped that whatever was inside isn't as bad as what I was running away from, it felt like hours before the movement finally stopped and the door slowly opened and there in front of was a short old woman in a black dress with her head covered in a scarf, some of her grey strands peeking out. The dim glow from the few candles lit inside the house helped me study the face of the old woman whom I felt was staring deeply at me, yet the pupils in her eyes were looking somewhere else. I just hope she is a human and not a werewolf, or worse a rogue!
