"I still couldn't decide on what to wear, and it's just one hour away. She was tired of trying on different dresses, but she knew she didn't like any she had tried on earlier, and it was already too late to go get a new dress. She thought to herself as she grumbled.
"What do I do now" she said while worrying that she might not get to dinner on time if she couldn't decide on what to wear right now, just as Sarah was all and about her room and scattering her wardrobe as if she wanted to dig for gold in her wardrobe. Her sister Fiona walked in.
"What are you looking for? Did you lose your liver or kidney?" Fiona asked.
"Hahaha, funny" Sarah replied with a serious face,
"Well, if you must know, tiny, I can't decide on what to wear to dinner with the Colton family."
"I told you all to stop calling me tiny. There is nothing even tiny about me, and I have outgrown that name, Sarah." Fiona said with a gnarly smile.
"Don't take it too seriously; you know you got that name from Daddy because he always got you oversized shoes and clothes every time, and I always wonder why every time,l," Sarah said while laughing very hard.
"Stop laughing, sis, Fiona said; I miss him, though; I miss having a dress I will grow into," said Fiona as she was laughing as well;" Well, I will only allow you to call me that because I love you."
"Tiny," Sarah said, and they both started laughing and fell onto the bed; "I miss him too," Sarah said.
"I miss him three," said Henry as he walked into Sarah's room.
"How long have you been there?" Asked Sarah as she sat up to be able to see Henry.
"Well, let's say a few minutes, and by the way, what time is your dinner? Because it's 7:30 pm as it i....
Sarah quickly jumped out of bed even before Henry could finish his statement; "7:30 pm, you say? Asked Sarah.
"Well, it's 7:31 now, but who is counting?" Henry answered.
"Well, I am; I really can't find what to wear, said Sarah, as she sounded really worried.
"Where is the gown daddy got you last year for his birthday, Sarah? I haven't seen you wear that gown, and it was very pretty on you when you tried it on then," said Fiona.
Well... Sarah paused a bit before realizing she did have such a gown in her box," Oh that's true, I have not been opportune to wear that gown because you know daddy fell ill shortly after he got me that gown, it's in my box on top of my wardrobe, can you help me out Henry?" asked Sarah
"Yeah, sure, but I will need to stand on something," Henry said.
"Yeah, sure, use my bed stool" Sarah replied.
Henry climbed on the stool and helped Sarah bring her box down.
"I hope I have not outgrown the gown," Sarah said when Henry brought the box down.
Sarah hurriedly collected the box from Henry as he took it down, quickly placed it on the bed, and opened it.
She didn't need to search much as the gown was just the first thing she saw when she opened the box.
"Found it," Sarah said excitingly. She grabbed the dress and decided to try it on, and just as she was about to pull off the top she was wearing, Henry interrupted,
"Hey, no, don't do that in my presence," Henry said as he walked out, and just as he walked out, he said he would be back to check it out.
Sarah tried on the gown and it was her perfect size,
"Have you taken your bath earlier?" asked Fiona.
"You know me very well, tiny, yes I have" answered Sarah. She turned and faced the girl and asked her what she thought,
"It's perfect, Daddy always gets you the best, and he knows what suits you best, "Fiona said.
"I know right?" Sarah said as she chuckled like a child that has just found a box filled with lots of candy.
"Are you bragging right now?" Fiona asked while laughing as well.
"No, I am not" Sarah replied while still laughing.
"Okay sis, try those diamond set necklaces that Dad got you," Fiona said.
"Do I have to wear everything Daddy got me today?" Sarah said.
"Yes, if it makes you look good; you know that man has good taste," Fiona replied.
"Fine, I will please pass my heels beside you," Sarah said as she did a little touch-up on her face. She was about to pack her hair in a bun when Fiona stopped her.
"Bun? Please let your hair down. It makes you look pretty, and this necklace and earrings bring out the spark in your eyes. Sarah, you look stunning," Fiona said to her sister while admiring how she looked.
"Really?" Sarah asked
"Yes, I wouldn't lie about that," Fiona replied.
"Thanks, tiny," Sarah said as she drew closer to Fiona. She wanted to give her hugs for the compliment when Henry knocked and asked if they were done.
''Yes, I'm done, Henry. Come in,'' Sarah answered.
As Henry stepped into her room his eyes lit up and he smiled at her,
"You look pretty, sis, and it's been a long time since you looked this pretty, Sarah," Henry said.
"Thanks, but what do u mean it's been long, Henry?" Sarah said as she picked up her purse to head out.
''Well, you just put on corporate wear every time, and it's been a long time since I saw you in any dress,'' Henry said.
''Thanks dear" Sarah said.
"You have to hurry now, it's 8 pm, and your soon-to-be inlaws won't like it,'' Henry said as he looked at his Rolex wristwatch.
''oh damn, Mum is so going to kill me," Sarah said as she hurriedly left her room.
.........................
"Good evening, Mr. Colton; your parent is waiting for you at the VIP lounge, and one of our waitresses will escort you there." Said the restaurant manager to Bryan just as he walked into the restaurant.
Bryan got to the restaurant by 8:10 and he knew he was quite late and followed the waitress to where his parents were seated.
''Good evening Mom'' Bryan said as he walked towards his parents, ''Good evening sir'' Bryan said to his father as he got to where they were seated,
"What's your time Bryan? You don't just listen, why are late bryan''mrs Colton asked
Bryan was a bit quiet, thinking of what to say to cover the main reason for his late, "I'm sorry, mum, work has been very hectic, and Dad, I am sorry about coming late, sir, "Bryan said.
"It's okay, we will discuss this when we get home, our inlaw is coming back and Bryan remember you kept your inlaw waiting," said Mr Colton
"But even the said-to-be bride is still not here and she's keeping all of us waiting," said Bryan
"That is why she's not my daughter," said Mr Colton angrily.
"Ok" is all Bryan could murmur right there.
Mrs Backwood was back to where she was seated, and just when she was well seated, Mrs Colton introduced Bryan to her properly.
"Mrs backwood, this is our son, Bryan, your soon to be son in law," said Mr.s Colton
"Oh, we have seen each other a few times at your shoe brand launching earlier this year, but it's still nice meeting you now officially," Mrs Backwood said while stretching out her hand to shake him.
"I know you, crazy woman," Bryan said to himself while he stood up to shake Mrs backwood, "it's nice to finally meet you as well but where's your daughter it's wrong to keep us waiting" Bryan Said to Mrs backwood as he was done shaking her and sat back on his seat. But he could see the corner eye his dad used in looking at him.
"Oh well, apologies for her running late; it's how work has been lately, but she's already on her way coming," replied Mrs Backwood.
"No, I understand very well, it's just a few minutes past 8, so I'm sure she will be here soon enough," said Mr Colton.
Bryan looked at his dad and wondered if those words came out of his mouth because the father he knew would not accept such from anyone. I need to know what this man is planning this time around; well, time will tell; while Bryan was still lost in thought, Sarah walked into their VIP section.
"Here comes the bride," said Mrs backwood whole smiling when she saw her daughter walk towards them.
Mrs. Colton turned towards the direction of Sarah to get a glimpse of her before she got to their table but who she saw was even better looking than who they described for her, yes she was chubby but she had a cute face and a good-looking body regardless, to think I thought she was a fat sloth but she can move, hmmm Mrs. Colton thought to her self and smiled at Sarah.
The moment Sarah walked closer she became tensed, "why do I feel like just turning my back to them and running as far as I can but then who am I kidding, I need this just as much they do", Sarah thought herself just right before she got to their table and smiled back at Mrs. Colton.
"Good evening, Mr. Colton and Mrs. Colton, I'm so sorry for keeping you guys waiting, my apologies," Sarah said as she tried apologizing to them.
"No problem, Ms. Backwood, you dressed like this is worth forgiving; you look beautiful, by the way; please sit down," said Mr Colton.
"Oh, you flatter me said Sarah as she smiled, "thanks sir for the compliment"
"Mrs. Colton, it is nice meeting you, ma'am," said Sarah again as she sat opposite Mrs. Colton.
Beside her, by her right, is Bryan seated, and by her left is where her mother, is sitting and smiling as well. Sarah knows her mother's smile is fake and must be pissed she came late.
"Nice meeting you as well, my dear," said Mrs Colton just as she was smiling.
"Bryan, what are you thinking about? Bryan," Mrs Colton said as she called out to her son.
Bryan, being so stuck in thought, did not realize that his mother was talking to him or the fact that Sarah was already seated beside him, but the soft tap on his shoulder brought him back to reality. Bryan tilted his head to his left to see who just tapped him, and that was when he realized that Sarah was already there.
"Your mum was talking to you just now," Sarah said, but the girl they described to him was supposed to look very ugly and not this soft-spoken as well, Bryan thought to himself.
"Uhn mom? You say?" Bryan asked his mom
"I asked what's on your mind that u didn't realize that Sarah is here"Mrs Colton replied
"Oh yeah, I am sorry; I just realized that now," Bryan said as he stretched out his hand to shake her.
"It's nice meeting you, Ms. Sarah, and by the way, you look stunning," said Bryan as he complimented her.
Sarah was surprised and thought to herself that all that she had heard and investigated about him might just be wrong because he was polite and not in any way rude or arrogant like she had expected him to be.
Sarah stretched out her hand too to shake him,
"It's nice meeting you too, Mr Colton," Sarah said while smiling back.
"Oops, my dad is here. You can't call me Mr Colton in front of him. He doesn't like it," Bryan said while trying to sound sarcastic, and he was smiling as well.
Little did Sarah know it was all a front.
"Oh come on I don't mind" replied Mr Colton
"How were you able to locate where we are seated, Sarah?" Mrs Colton asked Sarah.
"Oh, I asked your receptionist at the entrance, and they redirected me here, ma," Sarah replied.
"Oh, okay, I was just curious. Oh please, let's order something to eat before we dive right into our discussion, right Mrs Backwood?" Mrs Colton said
"Yes, you're right, Mrs Colton," Mrs Backwood answered.
A waitress was already right around the corner to attend to them and so they called her to attend to them.
...........................................
"Okay, have a great night," said Mrs backwood to the Colton family as she and Sarah walked into Sarah's car.
The moment they entered the car, Sarah knew her mother was going to nag her ears off.
"Don't start the car yet, Larry," Mrs backwood said to Larry.
"You look stunning in those diamonds; your father sure knows how to spoil a woman," Mrs backwood said to Sarah.
Sarah was quite quiet because she didn't know what to reply, but all she could do was stare outside at the stars through her window.
"This mint color gown looks really good on you; I was not expecting anything lesser, thanks For not embarrassing me," Mrs backwood continued, "also, you are not wearing those body-fitted gowns that always make you look like you are 5 months pregnant."
"but you see, coming late was the wrong thing to do. I raised you better than that, and I don't want to hear any excuses anymore" okay?
"Okay, ma," Sarah replied with a little bit of murmur.
"What's that?" Mrs backwood asked
"No nothing ma" replies Sarah
"Now your wedding is just a month away; I already sent the planner details to your assistant, make sure you start working on them tomorrow, okay?"
"Yes, ma," Sarah answered.
"And also, I noticed the boy took your number before leaving. Make sure you don't bore him out, and also, you better not disappoint me, Sarah," said Mrs backwood.
"Does my happiness not even matter to you, Mum? I'm trying, and you know it, planning a wedding that is just a month away is crazy, we should have told them we want it in 3 months, not 1 month, well you always do what you like, and my opinions don't count," Sarah said angrily.
"You know your opinion won't count as far as it involves saving my husband's legacy and business, don't act like a saint now, I saw the way you were staring at the boy, his good looking I won't lie, at least I didn't match you with a cripple or an ugly person or rather a fat person like you," Mrs backwood said while smiling
*Mum, why say that to your child? Are you even not proud of the way I look?" Sarah asked disgustingly
"Oh dear are you proud of yourself? That should be your question rather than asking me a silly question; I'm not the one marrying you; you should be happy they accept you for who you are."
"Really? Who would want to marry a fat girl? Let's be honest, you did not get your body from me," Mrs Backwood said disgustingly as well.
*Larry, please, you can take her home now," said Mrs backwood as she came down from Sarah's car to enter hers even though they were both going home together.
Sarah couldn't say anything even though she had a lot to say to her mother but she was loss for words and couldn't believe her mother would use such harsh words on her, tears fell down her cheeks and she gently wiped them off her cheek with her hand and cleaned it with her handkerchief she removed from her purse.
"Are you okay ma?" Larry asked
"Yes, Larry, please take me home," Sarah replied.
Just as Larry drove out of the restaurant parking lot, she got a message notification and it's from Bryan;
"Hi Sarah it's me, Bryan Colton, please I would love us to meet personally tomorrow by 7 pm if you don't mind, so we could get to know each other a bit before getting hitched,"
"Have a great night Sarah."
"How is it possible that he's this polite? He does kind of sound sweet, definitely not what I expected, but okay, let's see how it goes." Sarah thought to herself as she read through the message.
" Okay, no problem," was what Sarah replied to Bryan's text message.
All Sarah could think of while on her way home was what her mother said to her, and she couldn't wait to prove her mother wrong.
