TO BE AN ALPHA’S MATE

CHAPTER-FOUR

“It’s a full moon tonight. To celebrate the return of our Alpha, and make the Adonis pack feel more welcomed, there will be a small celebration this evening”, Azula declares and, bids us farewell.

We all bow our heads as the elders leave the arena, leaving the two packs and their Alphas standing alone. Hopefully, they know better than to fight to avoid trouble with Alaric.

Some males from our pack take the cue and approach Adonis's pack members, deliberately avoiding the females. The reception is warm, and the Adonis female approaches our pack, deliberately avoiding the males. No one wants to make an irreversible mistake in this heat period.

Kate leans towards me, and asks “Alex, would you be good?”

I sigh, then reply, “I will”.

With that, she strolls off to mingle with the other pack. Our friendship has always been filled with more actions than words, and sometimes I think we can read each other’s minds.

Sky… Louis, whatever his name is, takes two steps in my direction, and before he can take another, I storm off in the direction of the woods. When I notice he intends to follow me, I hasten my steps but take note of a pair of blue eyes trailing our movements.

It’s harder to walk in the woods without shoes, but I couldn't care less! Louis is the leader of my pack, and I had no idea! I never even knew he was a wolf! All my thoughts for the past three years in our relationship were that I was with a good-looking human who could be a douche-bag when he’s drunk, but not one of my kind, not a wolf, and not an Alpha! My Alpha.

“Alex, wait!” I heard Louis’ voice nearby and, instead of running further, I picked a log from the floor with the help of my wolf and threw it directly at him. My aim was his face, but of course, he’s an Alpha and can easily avoid that. I’m burning up with fury.

“Alex-” “No! Shut up, Louis!” I doubt I've felt this angry in a long time.

“Would you please let me explain?”

“And say what?! That your name is Sky, that you’re a wolf and an Alpha?”

“I never knew you were a wolf too. You lied to me as well”, Louis says, and I know he had a point, but I’ll be damned if he wins this argument that easily.

“Then what else do you have to explain?” I raised my voice higher at this point. “Care to explain why you’ve been a big jerk all these months, or why you flirt with other girls in front of me, or why I saw you with that cheerleader today?” I know I'm about to cry because my voice begins to break.

“Alex, please. You won’t understand now, but I did all that to protect you”. Of course, the perfect excuse.

“Let me guess, protect me from finding out you’re a wolf. Guess what, Einstein, I’m one too.”

Louis sighs, and I know that sigh only happens when the issue is deeper than I can imagine.

“Alex, yes. My name is Sky. Yes, I was doing it to protect you, but not just from finding out I'm a wolf. Also, because I don’t want you to be my Luna”.

At the sound of the last part of his statement, my heart breaks…again. Louis always found ways to hurt me when we were together as humans. Even as a wolf, he hasn’t changed that aspect. Being a Luna is every girl’s dream, and even if I did not expect it to happen, I still dreamed of it. But with the Alpha of my pack, and my supposed boyfriend rejecting me this outrightly, my life can’t seem any worse.

“We’ve broken up, right?” Louis' voice comes in again after some moments, and I don't think there’s another heart left for him to break.

“Yeah”, I say weekly.

“Good. Be careful Alex. I know you hate me but everything I'm doing is for your safety, I promise”. He turned to leave. “I’m sorry”. With that, he transforms into his wolf and runs in a direction that’s not the pack’s arena. I couldn’t care less where he went. I should wish him a brutal death, but without an Alpha, our pack would be over.

I’m listening to the sounds of the birds, and the stream nearby, the sound of insects and the wind, and of course, my broken heart. I have no strength to walk, move, speak, or even cry. I’ve never hated Louis… Sky, as I do right now, and I've never needed Kate like I do right now.

The atmosphere seems peaceful, and when I think about it, it seems too peaceful. My wolf senses subconsciously become heightened and I immediately know Sky and I were never in the woods alone. It’s a surprise he never figured it out either. What an Alpha!

My heart leaps to my throat when a strong arm goes straight for my throat, and hits my back, deliberately, gently against a tree trunk. My eyes are shut from fear, and noting the gentleness in this surprise attack, I can tell whoever it is, doesn’t want to hurt me.

I slowly flutter my eyes open, and staring into my soul are the most beautiful pair of blue eyes in the territory. Lucas looked good at the arena, but as close as he is now, I forget I'm heartbroken and could fall to my knees but for the hands-on my neck.

“Wow. For someone feisty at the arena, you sure are submissive. Alex, right?” I forced his hands away from my throat and, as an Alpha, he could overpower me, but he didn’t fight back. I thought of pushing him away, but I'm in heat and here’s a handsome man.

“We shouldn’t be here”. I intend to keep my reply as short as possible and leave soon before I make a mistake I won't regret.

“Oh right. The heating season”. His voice has a mockery and charm to it that I can’t help but chuckle. “I think you’re attractive”.

Lucas has a way with words, I noted to myself. “You’re saying that because you’re on heat too”, I blurted.

“Maybe, maybe not. But your wolf looks prettier than what I'm used to. Especially the eyes”. Everyone always compliments my wolf’s eyes. One silver and one black eye makes me stand out from the pack, but when I hear it from Lucas, it sounds different.

“Thank you,” I said and turned around to leave”.

Lucas appears in front of me, and before I can show surprise at his abnormal speed, his face is close to mine, my back is against a tree, and his hands are on either side of my frame.

I look like a child compared to this Alpha. He exhales roughly, and his breath reminds me of wildflowers and wet earthy soil-an intoxicating combination.

“We’re both in heat, so I'll skip straight to the point. I want you, and I know you want me. Can we…?”

If it were Louis who asked me this, I would readily accept. But coming from another guy, never! I’m no w***e but for Lucas…
