CHAPTER 37 The next morning Joel has set his alarm for six o’clock. It amazes me how cheerful he is in the morning. He literally bounces out of the bed and to the window to peer round the heavy drapes. “Has the snow gone?” I croak. Half of me is longing for him to say no and that he’ll have to stay the last night with me. But it seems I’m going to be disappointed. “Yeah,” he says, “the rains washed it all away. It’s just slush now.” “Will you be okay to drive?” I ask, concerned for his safety. “I’ll take it really easy,” he promises, “and I’ll text you when I get back, so no need to worry.” “Okay,” I thump the pillow in disappointment. “I’ll come down with you and wave you off.” “Stay in bed,” Joel says softly. “Go back to sleep, no need for us both to be up.” I stretch la
