Chapter 2
The Dying Alpha
Lena's POV
“Lena, I'm very sure you are going to walk through that gate and pretend that everything is fine.” Sofia said as she walked behind me.
“You do that all the time, like it's normal.” She added.
“And you've got a problem with that?”
“Yes I do, because it is what you've been doing for the past three years.” She said, adjusting her coat tighter.
“We are all allowed to look worried including you Lena.” She said and I didn't respond.
I kept on walking keeping my eyes on the environment, we were now in front of the storage building the doors were opened. I entered and Sofia followed suit also.
Half of the shelves were empty, the sacks containing grains were low too. The young Omega in charge of keeping the stock had a tight expression with her clipboard. I could remember three years ago sacks filled the whole storage so that we couldn't store some food produce again.
Sofia made a sigh as we turned around she was probably thinking the same thing, we got to the infirmary I slowed down a bit. There were warriors outside one of them had his arm wrapped with bandages and there was one very young one of his eyes was stitched up.
“How many were injured this week?” I asked.
"Seven from the northern border." Sofia said quietly.
"We lost two wolves pushing as we were trying to get Blue Moon scouts back." She said and I stopped walking.
From where we stood we could see the damaged fence, the post where the warriors did stay was spoiled. We had used ropes to tie them for temporary measure and it had been like that for four months, the seven years of war had broken us slowly bit by bit.
"Come on." I said to Sofia and we kept walking.
As we finally reached the pack house right in front of Alpha's room. Sofia nodded as I went in while she waited for me outside, the door creaked as I opened it slowly.
Alpha Silas Reed was sitting in the chair beside the window when I entered. A blanket was draped over his legs despite the fact that the room was hot, Alpha Reed was just sixty one years old but the sickness made him look like he was eighty years old.
"Lena." His voice was rougher than last time.
"Sit down." He said.
I sat down. "How are you feeling?"
"I'm feeling old." He said and almost smiled.
"The healers have been saying the same thing over and over again." He said.
"I am sorry."
“You don't have to be sorry for me, I just need you to be useful.” He said quietly and I nodded slowly.
“Can I ask you a question Lena?”
I looked up at him. “Yes you can Alpha.”
“If you discovered that Ethan's death wasn't entirely true..” He paused. “Like if you find out that what you believed about his death was not true would you be able to give up your revenge?”
I looked up at him, the question made me uncomfortable. “We all know that Ethan was killed by the Blue Moon warriors. It is not a rumor, it is what really happened.”
Alpha Reed stared at me for a while, he sighed, his mouth parted like he was about to say something. “You should prepare properly for your journey.” He said instead.
“Whatever happens in the summit, keep yourself in check, do not let your emotions cloud your judgement.” With that, he turned to face the window.
I stood up, gave a short bow, then went outside. Sofia was still waiting outside. She saw the expression on my face and frowned.
“The conversation was that bad?”
"He asked me strange questions about revenge."
"He almost said something then stopped himself." I said and Sofia remained quiet.
I stopped walking and turned to look at her because she never kept quiet unless something was wrong.
“Spill it.” I said.
She sighed. "I heard from a trader who came through the southern gate. He said Blue Moon is planning to use the Summit to publicly challenge Silver Moon's standing to humiliate us in front of all the thirty-two packs."
I gritted my teeth "It will not happen," I said.
"You do not know that Lena." She counted.
"I know I will not let it happen." We stared at each other and then she nodded slowly. She grabbed my arm before I walked away.
"Just be careful, promise me that you will be careful."
"I am always careful."
"You are always prepared and that is different."
I was in the courtyard spending time alone when I heard Damon calling my name, he got to where I was and sat beside me.
"Your brother was a strong warrior, a handsome man at that," he said.
“He was one of the best Silver Moon has ever produced. What Blue Moon Pack did to him was ruthless.” Damon paused, glanced at me.” And the so-called Alpha Zane Blackwood has never been held accountable for the innocent lives that were claimed.”
My jaw tightened at the sound of the name in my ears.
“Lena, I want you to know that whatever happens in the summit will determine Silver Moon's reputation and our position.” He paused, then looked at me again.
“Just like your brother you are the best thing the pack has produced right now, I want you to keep that in mind as you enter the estate.”
After letting the words sink in he stood up and walked away, my heart thumped loudly as I was alone.
I went back home immediately and then started packing my clothes, guns, necessary weapons, and some documents that my father had given to me earlier. I made sure everything was folded and placed in order.
As I was tying the bag my eyes caught something in the inner pocket I reached for it and slowly pulled it out.
It was a wolf wooden carving Ethan had given to me when we were twelve years old.
‘This is for when you miss me.’ He said smiling.
I had rolled my eyes at his words. 'You are always here.’
'I know but just in case you miss me.’ He pressed it further into my palm.
I sat on the edge of the bed slowly and let the tears fall down easily. My throat tightened, my whole eyes burned but the tears wouldn't stop coming.
I placed the carving inside my weakly, slumped to the ground and wrapped my hands around my legs shakily.
