Chapter 4 The Mate Bond Lena's POV “Lena you are to stick close to me and don't say anything unless you're asked to.” My father had said as we were entering the Greymond estate. “Make sure your eyes are everywhere, watching everything and taking details “ He had mentioned. “I always watch everything.” I replied. “I know but today it has to be different and more intense.” The Greymond estate hall was very large, it was the largest hall I had ever seen. There were stone walls that reached up to the ceilings, long tables that were carefully arranged in a meticulous formation. The banners of each pack were stationed in different sections of the hall for each pack to locate where they were supposed to be. Inside the hall all thirty-two delegates were present and the noise was so many different dialects and accents. I remained standing rooted in place beside my father and made sure my face was unreadable but deep inside I was still battling with the politics that was going on. I noticed two Alphas around the east side of the hall were talking quietly but I could feel the tension and I could tell it was an unresolved matter between their packs. I caught sight of an elder also around the north side of the hall. He was with a group going around with them. There were some sets of scrolls and they were actively collecting something. I could strongly feel everything: the powers, the alliance, the threat, everything designed to look just like an ordinary ceremony. “I heard whispers that the Ironfield pack is sitting away from the Crestwood pack. I thought they were allies at the last summit.” Sofia murmured beside me. “Well things happen.” I said. I saw Damon walking around the hall. He was going smoothly like it was a natural thing. He stopped when he saw an Alpha they spoke, shook hands, smiled and departed. Damon was the efficient leader, Silver Moon wouldn't be standing if not for his leadership. My father walked us to where the Silver Moon delegates were supposed to be, Sofia and I sat down but my eyes were still around watching and then something suddenly happened. The noise and the chattering immediately stopped, everything became quiet, everywhere became tense and then I saw the panicked exchanged looks people were giving. I looked towards the entrance and then I saw Alpha Zane Blackwood of the Blue Moon Pack walking inside the hall. He was tall, his shoulders were broad, his hair was dark and he was wearing a black outfit and there was the Blue Moon insignia at his collar. He walked inside slowly like he owned the entire place, like a ruler. His Beta was walking behind him, his face was unreadable. I went still for a moment when I realized the mental picture I had of him was completely different from what I was seeing. I had spent three years thinking he looked like a monster with scars and someone disgusting but he did not look like that. “Stop looking at him Lena.” My father whispered beside me, pulling me away from my thoughts. I swallowed. “I was not looking at him.” “You were.” My father said but didn't drag the matter further. I pulled my eyes from him and adjusted in my seat to make sure my eyes went to the front of the hall where the council was. The junior and the senior elders were already taking their seats, the Summit was about to start. As the summit started I tried so hard not to look toward the Blue Moon section even though my heart, mind, body and soul were screaming for me to look there most especially towards Alpha Zane's side. I stood up slowly to reach for the jug of water that was placed at the centre of the table and turned slightly to put my cup down when my eyes accidentally went to the wrong side of the room and I saw that he was already looking at me. I blinked to see if I wasn't imagining things but he really was looking at me. I did not know why, I couldn't tell what would make him look in my direction. His dark eyes were locked in on me and my heart beat loudly. I couldn't hear anything. I could see the mouths of people moving but I couldn't hear anything. My chest started pulling aggressively, tightly it was like a cord that was drawn and my wolf too. She was pacing around violently, rearing her head forward. She pushed with such a strong force that I almost fell. I grabbed the edge of the table for support, Zane's eyes were still on me, the cup slipped from my hand shattering to the floor but I couldn't hear a thing. "Lena." My father's voice was far. "Lena, tell me what is wrong?" My mouth refused to open. I could not answer him. The waves kept moving around me strongly. It moved across the entire hall calling the attention of everyone, all eyes were now on me. People were now whispering, the conversations had started again, the sound of chairs shifting and people turning around. "What is that?" "The bond. "That is a mate bond." Every Alpha, every elder, every council member, all of them were now looking between me and the man standing frozen across the room and I felt sick. Zane didn't have that normal expression anymore, his fist was clenched and his eyes had changed colour he was furious. His Beta quickly stepped in and placed his arm on his shoulder trying to keep him still. One of the council elders, Elder Drest, started walking towards us. He was the oldest council member, his hair was white and his skin had aged. He stopped right in the middle of us, he looked at me for a while then at Zane then back at me he turned to look at where the council were nodded slowly. “Come forward both of you.” He said and I did not move. There was no way in this world this was happening to me, no way. "Lena Carter." He called again but this time with an authoritative tone. “Come forward.” He said again and this time I couldn't disobey. I walked to the centre of the floor, Zane was walking from the other side and we stopped a few feet away from each other. It was then I looked at him properly. He looked like a real person our eyes met and there was something cold there. Elder Drest raised his hand and everyone in the hall went silent. “The bond has been confirmed and it is witnessed by the council and the thirty two pack leaders present.” Elder Drest said then turned around to face the room. “Lena Carter of the Silver Moon Pack and Zane Blackwood of the Blue Moon Pack are fated mates.” He announced and everywhere erupted. I heard my father call my name, I could hear Sofia gasping and Damon shifting uncomfortably in his seat. I stared at Zane, he was staring back at me also, and I felt the three good years of my life I spent training and building, I felt my whole world crashing down. My fate mates was my enemy. “Rejection of this bond by either party will result in the death of both within thirty days; there are no exceptions.” Elder Drest announced and my eyes widened.
