The First Test
Zane's POV
"You should be asleep," Kai said from the doorway of my office.
"So should you."
"I was asleep." He walked in and dropped into the chair across from my desk with the resigned expression of a man who had accepted that working for me meant irregular hours.
"The night patrol flagged something on the eastern wall I came to tell you directly."
I looked up from the border report I had been reading for the third time. "What kind of something?"
"Movement Internal someone on foot heading toward the residential wing." He paused. "Toward the guest room specifically."
I was on my feet before he finished the sentence.
I came around the corner of the eastern courtyard in time to see the figure halfway up the balcony wall.
