On the eve of her wedding, Aisha receives a cryptic message:

"Meet me at the bridge at midnight if you still wonder 'what if'."

When she arrives, she is stunned to find herself transported back to the night that changed everything between her and Rayyan her childhood best friend and first love. Given a second chance to rewrite their story, Aisha must decide whether to follow her heart or accept that some love stories are meant to remain unfinished.

But fate has its own rules, and every change comes with a price. As past and present blur, Aisha and Rayyan find themselves caught in a delicate balance between longing and destiny. Will they risk everything for a love that was never meant to be, or will they let go before history repeats itself?

A heart-wrenching tale of love, regret, and the moments that define us, The Night We Almost Changed Fate explores the timeless question what if?

Chapter 1: The Eve of Forever
"The hardest part about letting go is realizing that you were never meant to hold on." Aisha stared at her phone, her fingers frozen over the screen. The message was simple, yet it carried a weight that felt too familiar. "Meet me at the bridge at midnight if you still wonder 'what if'." It had to be a mistake, she told herself. A prank. A cruel joke. She was about to marry Imran the man she had chosen, the one who had always been there. There was no place for Rayyan, her first love, in her life anymore. The past was buried, locked away with the pieces of her heart she had left behind. Yet, as the minutes ticked by, the words echoed in her mind, too loud to ignore. What if? What if everything could be different? The night was cold as Aisha slipped out of the house, her heart pounding with an emotion she hadn’t felt in years. Her wedding was just hours away, and yet, she found herself walking toward the bridge where it all began with Rayyan. At 11:57 p.m., she stood at the edge, breath clouding in the air, staring at the figure in the distance. It couldn’t be him. But it was. Aisha’s heart skipped a beat as she stepped closer, the bridge’s cold iron railing biting at her palms. The moonlight cast long shadows across the quiet street, the world seemingly holding its breath. The figure before her stood tall, cloaked in the darkness, yet there was no mistaking the outline of the person she’d spent years trying to forget. Rayyan. She blinked, certain that this was a dream, some strange twist of fate. But as he turned, their eyes met eyes that hadn’t changed a bit in ten years. There was no doubt now; it was him. Standing as though time had never touched him. “Rayyan?” Her voice cracked the silence like a fragile echo. He took a step forward, a soft smile tugging at his lips, but his eyes those familiar eyes told a different story. They were filled with something she couldn’t quite name: longing, confusion, and a hint of something deeper, something that mirrored her own feelings. “You finally came,” he said, his voice low, almost a whisper. “I was starting to think you wouldn’t.” Aisha’s breath hitched as everything she thought she knew about the world unraveled. Her heart raced, torn between what was and what could be. “Why am I here, Rayyan?” she whispered, feeling the weight of everything between them. He didn’t answer right away, only looked at her, as though trying to read her soul. And then he spoke, his words heavy with something unspoken. “Because it’s not over, Aisha. Not yet.” Aisha’s heart hammered in her chest as Rayyan's words hung in the air, impossible to ignore. It was as if time had never passed, and everything she had buried beneath layers of years and memories came rushing back in a wave. “I don’t understand,” she whispered, shaking her head. “This can’t be real. I’m getting married tomorrow. I have a life… with Imran.” The words felt foreign on her tongue, like a promise she had made to someone else, someone she didn’t recognize anymore. She had convinced herself that she was moving forward, that her future was with Imran the man who had loved her quietly, steadily, without the chaos Rayyan had always brought into her life. Rayyan took a step closer, his presence overwhelming, pulling at her in a way she couldn’t explain. “You don’t have to explain anything,” he said softly. “I just needed you to come here. To know… there’s still time.” His voice broke on the last word, a raw edge she hadn’t heard before. Aisha wanted to step back, to run, but she was frozen. The pull between them was stronger than she’d ever imagined, a magnetic force that made the world outside this moment seem irrelevant. “You’re not supposed to be here,” she said, almost pleading. “None of this is supposed to happen.” Rayyan smiled, but it was bittersweet. “Sometimes, Aisha, the universe gives us another chance, even when we don’t deserve it. This isn’t a mistake. You’re here for a reason.” Aisha’s breath caught in her throat. This isn’t a mistake. Was he talking about the text, or was he talking about them? About the love they had once shared, now tangled in the web of past regrets and what-ifs? She shook her head again, trying to clear her thoughts. "Rayyan... this isn't possible. My life... my future..." Rayyan reached out, gently taking her hand. “What if it’s all been leading up to this moment? What if we were never meant to let go?” His touch sent a shiver through her, and for a brief moment, she wondered if she had somehow fallen into a dream. Tears welled in her eyes, and her voice trembled. “I don’t know if I can do this again. I don’t know if I can go back to you.” Rayyan’s expression softened, his thumb brushing over her knuckles. “You don’t have to go back, Aisha. You’re already here. And that’s all that matters.” For a moment, everything else faded away the cold night air, the wedding waiting just hours away. It was just her and Rayyan, standing on the bridge where their story had started. But now, she wasn’t sure what story they were writing anymore. “What if…” Aisha started, her voice barely above a whisper. “What if we could fix everything? What if we could rewrite it?” Rayyan’s gaze darkened, a flicker of something painful crossing his face. “Maybe we can’t rewrite everything. Maybe we’re only meant to find peace with what happened.” Aisha swallowed hard, her heart torn between the love she still felt for him and the life she had built with Imran. But standing here, in the same place where everything had fallen apart, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something inside her was changing. Her heart ached as she looked into Rayyan’s eyes; the past still felt like home. “Rayyan…” she whispered again, the words leaving her lips before she could stop them. “What happens now?” Rayyan let out a slow breath, the tension between them thickening. He looked down at their hands, holding on to her for a moment longer. “I don’t know, Aisha. But maybe we’ll find out together.” And for the first time in years, Aisha wondered if the past wasn’t meant to be left behind after all. Aisha stood there, staring at Rayyan, the weight of his words sinking in. The world felt like it had paused, frozen in that one fleeting moment of what could be and what should have been. She knew she should walk away. She knew she had a life waiting for her, a life with Imran, who had been her anchor for so long. But here, with Rayyan, all those carefully constructed walls she’d built around her heart seemed to crumble away, piece by piece. She pulled her hand back, taking a step away from him. The cold air bit at her skin, but it wasn’t enough to numb the swirling emotions inside her. Her heart raced as her mind tried to catch up with the reality of the situation. What if they could have a future together? What if this wasn’t just a random twist of fate but a second chance to right the wrongs of their past? Rayyan’s voice broke through her thoughts. “You’re still thinking about it, aren’t you?” Aisha looked at him, her breath catching in her throat. He could always read her like an open book. “I don’t know what to think,” she admitted quietly. “I don’t know what’s real anymore.” Rayyan’s expression softened, his hand reaching out once more, but he didn’t touch her this time. He kept a respectful distance, as though giving her the space she needed to process everything. “I get it. I’ve been lost too, Aisha. The last ten years haven’t been easy for me either. But what we had… it wasn’t something we were supposed to let go of.” Aisha’s heart twisted. The pain of losing him had been unbearable. She had loved him with a depth she had never experienced with anyone else, but the circumstances had torn them apart. And now, here he was still standing before her, just as she remembered, only this time, everything felt different. “I made my choices,” Aisha whispered, her voice shaky. “I walked away from you. And I built a life, a future, with Imran. I’m getting married tomorrow, Rayyan. You can’t just... come back into my life like this.” Rayyan’s gaze hardened, his lips pressing into a tight line. “I never wanted you to walk away, Aisha. I never asked you to choose. But I’m not going to pretend like I’m okay with losing you either. Not now. Not when I still feel this way.” Her pulse quickened. The tension between them thickened. She had known he would say something like this; she had known the moment he appeared that it wouldn’t be easy to walk away. But hearing the pain in his voice, seeing the vulnerability in his eyes, made it harder to push him away. “I can’t undo what happened,” she murmured, her voice barely audible. “No,” he agreed, his tone soft but firm. “But maybe we can start again. Maybe we can find out if there’s something still worth fighting for.” Aisha took a shaky breath, her hands trembling at her sides. She wanted to believe him, wanted to believe that this was more than just a fleeting moment of nostalgia. But how could she? How could she risk everything for a love that had once slipped through her fingers? Her mind screamed at her to walk away to forget the past and embrace her future with Imran. But her heart, her aching, broken heart, whispered something else. Rayyan took a cautious step closer, closing the distance between them. “You don’t have to make a decision right now. I’m not asking you to choose. I just want you to know that I’m here. And if you ever want to find out what could have been, I’ll be waiting.” His words echoed in her ears as Aisha stood frozen in place. It felt like the world had narrowed down to just the two of them the past and the present colliding in a way she never expected. She glanced down at her phone, the clock ticking relentlessly, a reminder of the life waiting for her. The wedding, the promises she had made, the future she had planned. But none of that seemed as certain now, not when she was standing on the edge of something she never thought she would feel again the pull of a love that hadn’t been allowed to run its course. “I don’t know what to do,” she confessed, her voice barely above a whisper. “I don’t know if I can go back to the way things were.” Rayyan’s gaze softened, understanding written all over his face. “Maybe it’s not about going back. Maybe it’s about figuring out if there’s something here worth moving forward with.” Aisha closed her eyes for a moment, taking in his words. The cool breeze swept through her hair, and for the first time, she felt as though she was standing at a crossroads, not just in her life, but in her heart. When she opened her eyes again, Rayyan was still standing there, waiting for her to make a decision she wasn’t sure she could ever make. “I need time,” she said finally, the words escaping her lips like a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. Rayyan nodded slowly, a look of relief mixed with sadness in his eyes. “Take all the time you need. I’m not going anywhere.” As Aisha turned to leave, her heart heavy with uncertainty, she couldn’t shake the feeling that this was only the beginning of something that would change her life forever. Aisha’s heart raced as she stepped away from Rayyan, her thoughts tangled in a web of confusion. She didn’t know if she was running toward something or away from it. Every step felt like a battle between what was and what could be. The wedding was just hours away, but at this moment, everything seemed to blur together. As she walked toward the end of the bridge, the sound of Rayyan’s voice called out to her, sharp and urgent. “Aisha, wait!” She froze, her breath catching in her throat. The weight of his plea was undeniable, pulling her back toward him. But she couldn’t turn around. Not yet. Not when her heart was caught between two lives two versions of herself. “Rayyan, I ” “Aisha, please! There’s something you need to know. Something I should have told you before.” His voice was frantic now, almost desperate. Aisha’s stomach twisted. She turned around slowly, her eyes locking onto his. There was fear in his eyes, something she hadn’t seen before. “What is it?” she asked, her voice trembling. Rayyan swallowed hard, taking a step toward her, his face pale under the moonlight. He opened his mouth, but just as the words began to form, a loud, unmistakable sound echoed through the air the screech of tires, followed by a crash. Aisha’s heart lurched. She spun around instinctively, but in the split second it took for her to turn, a black SUV came speeding toward the bridge, swerving out of control. “Rayyan, look out!” she screamed. But before either of them could react, the vehicle hit the guardrail, sending it careening toward them. Everything went white.
