Chapter 1 Rogue
The no-man’s land reeked of rot and rogue blood. Massive paws crushed dead leaves beneath him as Kade moved, his wolf form a shadow among the pines. Midnight-black fur bristled as his nose twitched, catching the faintest curl of blood on the breeze. His gold wolf eyes, sharp, calculating narrowed. Closer, Varric rumbled, prowling beneath Kade’s thoughts. The stench thickens. I smell it, Kade replied, his mental voice clipped. The link between man and beast was seamless now, but Varric was growing more restless with each breath. Behind him, two lighter wolves flanked his path. Ronan, his Beta ran smoothly on his right, his light brown coat blending into the underbrush. Darian, the Delta, heavier in build, kept to the left, his gait more aggressive, tail high. Both were silent through the external mind link shared with their Alpha, but their wolves hummed quietly in Kade’s periphery. An instinctual bond honed by hierarchy and respect. Rogues shouldn’t be this close to our lands, Ronan’s wolf muttered in a low growl. Not without cause. Darian’s wolf huffed. They’re pests. Desperate. Varric’s growl rumbled louder. This is no mere pest. Kade said nothing aloud. His focus sharpened as the scent of blood intensified. The weight of his Alpha aura spread through the forest, an invisible force that demanded submission. Even the trees seemed to bow beneath it. And then they found her. A crumpled figure lay beneath a gnarled oak, silver hair matted with dirt and blood. Her body was a canvas of torn flesh, broken bones, and stubborn breath. The air shifted. Mate. The word wasn’t spoken. It didn’t have to be. It slammed into Kade’s chest like a fist. Varric snarled triumphantly. Ours. The Moon’s gift. No. Kade’s denial was immediate, instinctive. Not here. Not now. But Varric was relentless. You scent her. You feel it. This is fate. Behind him, Ronan and Darian shifted their weight, sensing their Alpha’s sudden tension. “Kade?” Ronan’s question laced the mind link, formal, cautious. He didn’t respond. Instead, he stepped closer, towering over the broken female. With a sharp thought, his body responded. Bones cracked, fur receded, muscle shifted pain lanced through him, sharp but familiar. In moments, Kade stood on two legs, bare and unbothered by the forest’s chill. His ice-blue human eyes locked on the unconscious rogue. Behind him, Ronan and Darian shifted as well, their transformations fluid, practiced. “She’s rogue,” Darian sneered, voice human now. “Trash on the doorstep.” “She’s alive,” Ronan observed, tone neutral but watchful. Kade crouched beside her, his Alpha aura pressing heavy against the clearing. Any lesser wolf would cower. She did not. Perhaps she could not. Yet even in her broken state, her scent clung to him wildflowers crushed beneath a storm. It struck something primal. Varric prowled beneath his skin, restless. Weak now, but she is ours. You know it. “You feel it too,” Kade growled internally. As the Moon decrees. Stop fighting it. The thought made Kade’s jaw tighten. He had no time for this. The Werewolf Council watched his every move. Housing a rogue was already a risk. Claiming one? Suicidal. But his wolf didn’t care. Neither did the bond coiling around his bones. “Silver cuffs,” Kade commanded aloud, his voice laced with Alpha compulsion. It rippled through the mind link, hitting Ronan and Darian with the weight of absolute authority. Ronan responded immediately, producing diluted silver restraints from his gear. Darian muttered, “Should just end her now.” Varric snarled savagely. Try, and I’ll rip his throat. Kade’s lips curled. “She’s mine to decide.” That, at least, shut Darian up. Ronan secured the cuffs carefully, avoiding direct skin contact as the silver sapped what little strength remained in her. Yet even subdued, her scent was a brand on Kade’s senses. The mate bond whispered insidiously. Not yet claimed. But undeniably there. “Get her to the infirmary,” Kade ordered. “Yes, Alpha,” Ronan replied, lifting her with unexpected care. As they moved back toward Blackfang territory, Kade felt the pulse of his pack through the mind link. Whispers. Questions. Dissent veiled as curiosity. “Alpha returning with a rogue.” “Why bring her in?” “The Council will demand answers.” His aura surged through the link, silencing them. Back at the estate, the mansion loomed—modern, sleek, yet steeped in tradition. Built by the blood of their ancestors, sustained by Kade’s iron will. As they crossed the threshold, the invisible weight of pack hierarchy settled over them. Every wolf they passed dipped their heads, their spines instinctively bending beneath the force of Kade’s dominance. Yet still, the whispers followed. In the infirmary, sterile lights glared harshly. Machines beeped in rhythm with a life too stubborn to quit. Kade stood behind glass, watching her. Watching the rogue who had no right to stir his wolf, no right to bind him with a bond he had not chosen. Varric’s voice was softer now. You can feel it. Deny it all you like. She is ours. “Not now,” Kade ground out internally. But the bond thrummed on. Unrelenting. The sharp scent of antiseptic clashed with the wild earth still clinging to Kade’s skin. The infirmary was sterile, modern gleaming white tiles, chrome fixtures, machines humming soft mechanical heartbeats. It was everything the forest was not. Yet even here, the air tasted of her. Still breathing, Varric rumbled, prowling beneath Kade’s skin. Stubborn little thing. Good. She’ll need that fire. Kade stood at the glass, arms folded, his ice-blue gaze fixed on the rogue. Silver glinted from the cuffs at her wrists, anchoring her to the bed. Her silver hair now clean but tangled was spread like a halo around her bruised face. She was too small for a werewolf. Too delicate. Yet the bond snarled between them, coiled and alive. You feel it, Alpha, Varric pressed. Fighting it changes nothing. “I control this. Not you, let’s not forget our chosen mate Amara is still planning our wedding ” Kade growled, but even his mental voice lacked its usual bite. Behind him, Ronan and Darian flanked the doorway. Their presence was a silent reminder of pack hierarchy, their gazes trained on their Alpha, yet neither missed the tension in his stance. “She’s stabilized,” Merek, the pack’s healer, announced, his voice clipped. “But barely. Another hour out there and she’d be bones.” “She should’ve been bones,” Darian muttered under his breath. “Rogue filth shouldn’t be in our walls.” Varric’s growl sharpened. He tests us. Let me correct him. Kade shot Darian a look sharp enough to cut. “She’s here because I allowed it. That’s all you need to know.” Ronan, ever the diplomat, spoke through the mind link. “Alpha, the pack senses the shift. Whispers spread. The Council will hear of this.” “Let them.” Kade’s aura flared outward, heavy and oppressive, silencing any further dissent. Even Ronan’s wolf lowered its tail beneath the weight. But still, the unease was palpable. They’re right to fear, Varric murmured. She changes everything. As the Moon decreed. Before Kade could answer, the infirmary doors creaked open. Amara’s scent announced her before her footsteps did, jasmine and entitlement wrapped in silk. She entered with a smile that didn’t reach her eyes, her presence a calculated display of poise. “Kade.” The word purred from her lips, but it was a challenge beneath the sweetness. “Imagine my surprise.” “I doubt anything surprises you, Amara,” Kade replied coldly. Her gaze slid to the rogue behind the glass, disdain curling her lip. “A rogue, brought into our pack. Bold. Reckless. Dangerous.” “So am I,” Kade said. Varric snarled approval. She has no claim. She never will. But Amara wasn’t deterred. “Your father would’ve had her executed at the border.” “I am not my father.” “No. You’re more dangerous. Because you think with this—” she tapped her temple, “—but sometimes, you let the wolf speak louder.” Her implication hung heavy. Foolish female, Varric growled. She does not understand what stands before her. “Careful, Amara,” Kade said, voice soft but edged with steel. “This is still my territory.” She inclined her head, feigning submission. “Of course. I only wish to remind you that alliances are delicate things. The Council watches. Other packs wait for you to falter.” “I don’t recall asking for your counsel.” Amara’s smile thinned. “No. But you’ll feel the consequences if you’re not careful.” With a swish of her designer coat, she left, the click of her heels sharp in the sterile quiet. Darian huffed. “She never knows when to shut up.” “She knows exactly when,” Ronan corrected quietly. Kade remained silent, his gaze returning to the rogue. Her pulse fluttered weakly on the monitor, but her scent… her scent tangled with his wolf, wrapping tighter with every breath. We should be at her side, Varric whispered. Her wolf calls to us. Faint, but there. The thought struck like a blow. Because Kade could feel it too. A thread, thin but unbreakable, linking him to her. His instincts screamed to close the distance. To touch. To claim. But instinct was not law. He would not lose himself. “She remains under guard. No one approaches without my word,” Kade said, voice resonating with Alpha command. The order embedded itself into the pack’s collective mind, undeniable. “Yes, Alpha,” Ronan and Darian echoed. But as they left him alone with her, Kade’s reflection in the glass stared back ice-blue eyes rimmed with a molten gold glow. The bond would not be silenced. Not tonight. Not ever.
