THE SOVEREIGN CAGE .
CHAPTER ONE:
The rain bled down the floor-to-ceiling glass of the Valenti Penthouse, blurring the glowing neon city seventy floors below.
Christy shivered, her soaked silk blouse clinging cold against her pale skin. Her hands trembled so violently she had to lace her fingers together just to hide the shaking. Every breath felt like inhaling glass.
She wasn't supposed to be here. She was just a quiet archivist, a nobody trying to clean up her father's toxic debts. But the ledger she had inherited carried names that didn't belong in polite society—and one name written in thick, terrifying black ink: ALEXANDER VALENTI.
The heavy, hand-carved doors behind her clicked shut with a sound like a vault closing.
"You're shaking, piccola."
The voice rolled across the room like low thunder.
Christy stiffened, shrinking back as a towering figure stepped out from the shadows of the private study. Alexander Valenti looked less like a human being and more like a dark god carved from black marble. Broad shoulders filled out an immaculate tailor-made suit. His jaw was sharp, his dark hair slicked back, and his storm-gray eyes locked onto her with an intensity that stripped the air right out of her lungs.
"P-please..." Christy’s voice cracked, fragile and barely audible above the storm outside. She clutched the damp velvet folder against her chest like a shield. "I brought the papers. The ledger... my father didn't mean to steal from your accounts. I'll work. I'll give you everything I own—just please don't hurt him."
Alexander slowly walked toward her, each heavy leather step rhythmic and deliberate. He didn't rush. Predators never rushed when the prey was already cornered.
When he stopped, he towered over her, casting a broad, suffocating shadow that completely swallowed her frail frame. The faint scent of expensive bourbon, tobacco, and cold rain drifted off him.
"Your father's life was forfeit the moment he put his hands in my pocket," Alexander said, his voice terrifyingly calm, devoid of all mercy. "And you, Christy... you think a few tearful pleas and a ruined folder can pay off a twenty-million-dollar debt?"
"I don't have anything else," she sobbed softly, a stray tear spilling down her pale cheek. She looked up at him with wide, terrified brown eyes, completely defenseless. "I have nothing left."
Alexander lifted a hand. His long, calloused fingers caught her chin, lifting her face firmly until she was forced to look directly into his merciless gray eyes. The touch was possessive, unyielding, and far too warm against her freezing skin.
"Wrong," he murmured, his thumb trace-stroking the delicate line of her lower lip. "You have yourself."
Christy’s breath hitched. "W-what?"
"You stumbled into my world trying to play the brave martyr," Alexander whispered, his dark gaze darkening with a dangerous, hungry light as he studied her trembling lips. "You looked at my ledger, saw my secrets, and thought you could walk back out into the light. But nobody leaves me, Christy."
He reached into his breast pocket and produced a sleek black fountain pen, along with a single sheet of heavy parchment, dropping them onto the marble coffee table beside them.
"Sign it," he commanded softly.
"What is it?" her voice whimpered.
"A transfer of custody," Alexander said, his grip on her chin tightening just enough to make her gasp. "Your father's debt is cleared. In exchange, you belong to Valenti Enterprises. You move into my estate tonight. You eat when I tell you to eat, you sleep where I tell you to sleep, and you never leave my sight."
"I... I can't do that!" Christy cried out, tears pouring down her cheeks as she tried to pull back. "That's—that's slavery!"
Alexander didn't budge. He leaned down, his lips brushing against the sensitive shell of her ear, his deep voice vibrating through her entire body.
"It’s survival, little bird," he purred coldly. "Because the men hunting your father know you have that ledger. Outside these glass walls, you are dead by morning. Inside... you are mine. And I protect what is mine."
He released her chin, leaving her skin tingling where his fingers had been. He held out the pen, his expression cold, dominant, and absolute.
"Sign, Christy. Before I change my mind and let the dark take you."
