Chapter1:The Errand Boy
The summer heat clung to Tony Russo's skin as he leaned against the brick wall of Sal's Pizzeria, his eyes scanning Flatbush Avenue. The smell of garlic and tomato sauce wafted from the kitchen, reminding him of his mother's cooking. But Tony wasn't here for a slice. He was waiting for a package. At twenty-three, Anthony "Tony" Russo was nothing more than a nobody in the grand scheme of things. A high school dropout with a chip on his shoulder and dreams bigger than his cramped Brooklyn apartment. But he had an in, a chance to be somebody. His uncle Frankie had pulled some strings, gotten him noticed by the right people. Now, Tony was an associate of the Gambino family, the lowest rung on a very tall ladder. A black Cadillac rolled to a stop in front of the pizzeria. Tony straightened up, his heart racing. The back window rolled down, revealing a face he recognized from hushed conversations and newspaper clippings: Sammy "The Bull" Gravano, one of John Gotti's top lieutenants. "You Frankie's nephew?" Gravano's voice was gruff, no-nonsense. Tony nodded, trying to keep his voice steady. "Yes, sir. Tony Russo." Gravano's eyes narrowed, sizing him up. After what felt like an eternity, he reached into his jacket and pulled out a brown paper package. "Take this to Big Paul's club on 86th. Don't open it, don't lose it, don't talk to nobody about it. You got me?" Tony took the package, feeling its weight. Money? Drugs? He didn't know, and he knew better than to ask. "Yes, sir. I understand." "Good," Gravano grunted. "Don't f**k this up, kid. It's your first test." The window rolled up, and the Cadillac peeled away, leaving Tony alone on the sidewalk with his heart pounding. He tucked the package inside his jacket and started walking, trying to look casual while his mind raced. This was it. His chance to prove himself. To show the family he could be trusted, that he was worth something. Tony had grown up hearing stories about the old neighborhood, about respect and honor and men who commanded both. He wanted that. Craved it. As he navigated the busy Brooklyn streets, Tony couldn't help but dream. One day, it would be him in the back of that Cadillac, giving orders instead of taking them. One day, people would whisper his name with a mix of fear and reverence. But for now, he was just an errand boy. A nobody with a package that felt like it weighed a thousand pounds. Tony arrived at Big Paul's club, a nondescript building with blacked-out windows. He took a deep breath, steeling himself, before pushing open the door. The interior was dark, smoky, filled with the murmur of conversations that stopped as he entered. A mountain of a man approached him, hands like ham hocks. "What do you want, kid?" Tony swallowed hard. "Package for Big Paul. From Mr. Gravano." The man's eyebrows shot up. He jerked his head towards a door in the back. "Through there. And kid? Watch yourself." Tony nodded, his mouth dry. He made his way through the club, feeling eyes on him from every shadow. This was a world he'd only glimpsed from the outside, a world of power and danger. And now, he was stepping into it. Big Paul Castellano, the boss of the Gambino family, sat behind a massive desk. His presence filled the room, making Tony feel small and insignificant. "Well?" Castellano's voice was quiet, but it carried the weight of command. Tony stepped forward, produced the package from his jacket. "From Mr. Gravano, sir." Castellano took the package, examined it briefly, then set it aside. His eyes bored into Tony. "You're Frankie's nephew?" "Yes, sir." A long moment of silence stretched between them. Tony fought the urge to fidget, to look away. Finally, Castellano nodded. "You did good, kid. Maybe there's a place for you after all." Relief flooded through Tony. He'd passed the test. Taken his first real step into this world of shadows and power. As he left the club and stepped back into the Brooklyn night, Tony Russo knew his life had changed. The path ahead was dangerous, uncertain, but it promised everything he'd ever wanted. Respect. Power. A chance to be somebody. He just had to be willing to do whatever it took to climb that ladder. Tony walked home, his steps light despite the weight of the choice he'd made. The errand boy was on his way to becoming something more. And God help anyone who got in his way.
