Chapter 1
Sophie stood at the kitchen sink, staring out the window at the autumn leaves falling from the trees outside. She was lost in thought, her mind replaying the events of the past week over and over again. She couldn’t believe she had let it happen, couldn’t believe she had given in to her desires.
A soft knock at the door broke her out of her reverie. She turned to see Mark standing there, his piercing blue eyes locked on hers.
“Hey,” he said, his voice calm and even. “Can we talk?”
Sophie hesitated for a moment, unsure of what to say. She knew she had to be careful, knew she couldn’t let her feelings get the best of her again. But something about Mark made her want to let down her guard, to open up to him in a way she never had with anyone else.
“Sure,” she said, gesturing for him to come in. “What’s on your mind?”
Mark walked over to the counter and leaned against it, his broad shoulders towering over her. He looked down at her, his expression serious.
“I know things got a little out of hand between us,” he said, his voice low. “And I just want you to know that I understand if you need some space. I don’t want to push you into anything you’re not ready for.”
Sophie felt a pang of guilt as she looked up at him. Mark was so kind, so considerate, and she had let him down in a way she couldn’t even begin to explain.
Mark reached out and took her hand, his touch gentle and reassuring.
“I know it’s not easy,” he said. “But we’ll figure it out together. I’m not going anywhere.”
Sophie looked up at him, her heart aching with a mix of longing and fear. She knew she was playing with fire, knew she was risking everything she had for a chance at something she couldn’t even name.
But as Mark leaned in and pressed his lips to hers, all of her doubts and fears melted away, replaced by a burning desire, even with their seven year age difference Mark was 21 and Sophie was 28, she couldn’t ignore it.
Sophie pulled away from Mark, her mind racing with a thousand different thoughts. She couldn’t believe she had let things go this far, couldn’t believe she had risked everything she had for a chance at something she knew was wrong.
“I can’t do this,” she said, pulling away from him. “We can’t keep doing this.”
Mark looked at her, his expression pained.
“I know it’s complicated,” he said. “But we can’t just ignore how we feel about each other.”
Sophie shook her head, her eyes filling with tears.
“It’s not just complicated,” she said. “It’s wrong. I’m married to your brother, Mark. I have three children. I can’t just throw all of that away.”
Mark stepped closer to her, his hand reaching out to brush her hair away from her face.
“I’m not asking you to throw anything away,” he said. “I just want to be with you, Sophie. You know that you can't fight what you feel , when I touch you".
Sophie felt a lump rise in her throat at his words. She had never heard anyone say those words to her before, not even her husband. But she couldn’t let herself get carried away by his words, couldn’t let herself be blinded by her feelings for him.
“It’s not that simple,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “We have to be careful. We can’t let anyone find out about this.”
Mark nodded, his expression serious.
“I know,” he said. “And I’ll do whatever it takes to protect you and our secret.”
Sophie looked up at him, her eyes searching his face for any sign of doubt or hesitation. But all she saw was love and devotion, a deep and abiding love that made her heart ache with longing.
“Okay,” she said, her voice barely audible. “Okay, we’ll be careful. But we have to end this, Mark. We can’t keep doing this to each other.”
Mark sat alone in his apartment, lost in thought. He couldn’t stop thinking about Sophie, about the kiss they shared. He knew it was wrong, he knew he shouldn’t have kissed his brother’s wife, but the feelings he had for her were just too strong. He tried to push them away, to ignore them, but it was no use.
He remembered the look in her eyes when they kissed, the way her lips felt against his, the way her body pressed against his. It was like nothing he had ever felt before, and he couldn’t believe he had been foolish enough to let it go.
But Sophie was married to Aiden, his brother. He knew he had to respect that, no matter how much it hurt. And Aiden was his boss, the head of the company he worked for. He couldn’t risk everything for his own selfish desires.
As he sat there lost in thought, his phone buzzed on the table next to him. He picked it up to see a message from Sophie.
“Mark, I need you,” it read.
Mark’s heart raced as he read the message. Why would Sophie need him ? Was it about the kiss? He knew he had to meet with her, no matter how much it scared him.
He quickly replied, “Where are you?”
Sophie responded with an address and a time, and Mark knew what he had to do. He took a deep breath, grabbed his keys, and headed out the door.
As he made his way to Sophie’s, he couldn’t help but think about the kiss, and what it meant for his future. He knew it was a mistake, but he couldn’t help the way he felt. He just hoped that Sophie would be able to forgive him, and that they could move past it.
