WHEN SILENCE SPEAKS LOUDER

826 Words
Cecilia’s heart pounded so loudly she was sure Wilton could hear it. “Now?” she whispered. Wilton didn’t look away. “Yes, Cecy. Now.” The weight of his words pressed heavily on her chest. “I… I can’t,” she said, shaking her head. His expression shifted hurt, controlled, but unmistakable. “You can’t… or you won’t?” Cecilia wrapped her arms around herself. “I’m not ready to lose either of you.” Wilton let out a quiet, bitter laugh. “That’s the problem. You’re not the only one in this.” “I know,” she said softly, her voice trembling. “No, you don’t,” he replied. “Because if you did, you’d understand what this feels like for me. I’m here giving you everything… and you’re still unsure.” “I’m not unsure about you,” Cecilia said quickly. “I love you.” “But?” he pressed. Her silence answered. Wilton turned away, running a hand through his hair. “There shouldn’t be a ‘but’ when it comes to love.” “There is when your heart is divided,” she whispered. He faced her again. “Love is a choice, Cecy. And right now… you’re choosing neither of us.” *** Across town, Rajab sat alone, staring at his phone. Cecilia’s words echoed in his mind. “You make me feel alive.” Yet it wasn’t enough. His phone lit up. Cecilia. He hesitated, then answered. “Hello?” “Rajab… I need to see you.” “Now?” “Yes.” He sighed. “Send me your location.” *** Back at Cecilia’s apartment, Wilton was already heading for the door. “So that’s it?” she asked. He paused. “No. This is me stepping back before I lose myself.” “Wilton, please ” “I love you,” he said quietly. “But I won’t beg for a place in your heart.” And then he left. The door closed, and the silence that followed felt heavier than any argument. Cecilia slid down to the floor, tears streaming freely. “Why is this so hard?” *** An hour later, Rajab found her sitting outside. “You look like you haven’t slept,” he said, sitting beside her. “I haven’t,” she replied. “What happened?” “Wilton came. He asked me to choose.” Rajab’s expression hardened slightly. “Did you?” She shook her head. “I couldn’t.” “Of course,” he muttered. She turned to him. “Don’t do that.” “Do what?” “Act like I don’t care,” she said. “This is hurting me too.” Rajab exhaled. “Then why not end it with one of us?” “Because I don’t know how,” she admitted. “Every time I lean toward one… I feel like I’m betraying the other.” Rajab looked at her seriously. “You’re not being fair, Cecilia.” Her eyes filled with tears. “I know.” “No,” he said gently but firmly. “You’re trying to protect your feelings, but you’re hurting both of us.” That hit her hard. “I never wanted this,” she whispered. “No one does,” he said. “But it’s happening. And avoiding the choice is still a choice.” *** They sat in silence for a moment. Then Cecilia asked softly, “If I choose him… what happens to us?” Rajab didn’t hesitate this time. “I walk away.” Her chest tightened. “Just like that?” “What do you expect?” he asked. “Stay and watch you love someone else?” Tears slipped down her cheeks. “And if I choose you?” she asked. His voice softened. “Then I give you everything. No doubts.” She looked down. “And if I choose no one?” Rajab studied her carefully. “Then maybe you finally find yourself.” The words lingered. For the first time, Cecilia felt something different not pressure, not fear… but clarity beginning to form. “Maybe that’s what I need,” she said slowly. Rajab nodded. “It won’t be easy.” “I know,” she whispered. *** Later that night, Cecilia sat alone in her room. But this time, the silence felt different. Not heavy. Not painful. Just… still. She picked up her phone. First, Wilton. “I’m sorry. I need time to find myself. I don’t want to love you halfway.” She hit send. Then Rajab. “You were right. I need to choose myself first.” Send. Cecilia placed her phone down and stared at the ceiling. For the first time in a long time… she wasn’t torn. She wasn’t choosing between two hearts anymore. She was choosing her own. And somehow, that felt like the hardest but right decision she had ever made.
