THE WEIGHT OF TWO HEARTS

715 Words
Cecilia stood by the window, her fingers gently tracing the edge of the curtain as the evening breeze slipped into her room. The sky was painted in soft shades of orange and purple, but her heart… her heart was anything but calm. Wilton had been distant. Not completely gone but different. His calls had become shorter. His laughter, less full. And the warmth she once felt so effortlessly from him now came in fragments… like a fading echo. Yet, every time she tried to question it, he would pull her back in with a soft voice, a sweet word, a memory of who they used to be. And that was what made it harder to let go. *** Earlier that day, Cecilia had met Rajab again. It wasn’t planned. It never was. But somehow, fate kept placing him in her path like a test she wasn’t ready to pass. They sat across from each other at a quiet café, neither of them speaking for a moment. Rajab watched her carefully, as if trying to read the story hidden behind her eyes. “You’re not happy,” he finally said. Cecilia forced a small smile. “You don’t know that.” “I do,” he replied softly. “Because when someone is truly happy… they don’t hesitate like you do before smiling.” His words hit deeper than she expected. For a moment, she looked away, afraid that if she met his eyes again, he would see everything she was trying to hide. “Wilton loves me,” she said quietly, almost as if she was reminding herself. Rajab nodded. “I’m sure he does.” There was a pause. “But the real question is… do you still feel loved the same way?” *** That question followed her the entire evening. Even now, standing by the window. Even now, holding her phone… staring at Wilton’s name. She wanted to call him. She needed to hear his voice. But something stopped her. Fear. Not of losing him but of confirming what her heart was beginning to understand. That maybe… love alone was no longer enough. *** Her phone buzzed suddenly. A message. From Wilton. “Hey… I’ve been thinking about you. Can we talk later?” Cecilia’s heart skipped. This was what she wanted… right? But instead of excitement, she felt something unfamiliar. Uncertainty. At that same moment, another message came in. From Rajab. “I hope you’re okay. Just know… you don’t have to pretend with me.” Cecilia closed her eyes tightly, gripping the phone in her hand. Two messages. Two hearts. Two different kinds of love. One that felt like home… but was slowly slipping away. And another that felt new… yet strangely safe. A single tear rolled down her cheek as she whispered to herself: “Why does love have to be this complicated? *** That night, Cecilia made a decision. Not about who to choose… But about something even harder. To finally face the truth she had been running from. Because deep down, she knew Soon, she wouldn’t be able to hold onto both. *** Cecilia didn’t wait long. Later that evening, she agreed to meet Wilton. They chose their usual spot a quiet place that once held laughter, shared dreams, and stolen glances. But tonight, it felt unfamiliar, like something sacred had shifted. Wilton arrived first. When Cecilia approached, he stood up, his eyes soft but searching. “You came,” he said gently. “I had to,” she replied. There was a silence before he spoke again. “I know I’ve been distant… life’s just been overwhelming.” Cecilia looked at him carefully. “Life… or us?” That question lingered between them. Wilton sighed, running his hand through his hair. “I don’t want to lose you, Cecy.” Her heart tightened at the nickname but this time, it didn’t bring the same comfort. “Then don’t,” she whispered. “But don’t love me halfway either.” For the first time, Wilton didn’t have an immediate answer. And in that silence, Cecilia felt something shift inside her not a break, not yet… but a quiet awakening. She was no longer just holding onto love. She was beginning to question it. And that… changed everything.
