Chapter 1
The message was marked as read almost immediately.
After Ethan saw who he was holding, his face flushed all the way to his ears.
But his arms never loosened.
Sophie Cole leaned against him, waved her hand, and laughed happily.
"No, no, that doesn't count. Why are you holding me so tightly? Are you taking advantage of me?"
My face turned pale, while Ethan's friends across from us burst into laughter.
"Hey, that's not what you were saying just now."
Sophie covered the corner of her mouth, gave Ethan a playful glare, then turned to look at me.
"Who would've thought this guy couldn't even recognize his own wife? Besides, if I really walked onto the stage for the ceremony, what would Jenna Shaw do?"
The moment she finished speaking, the curious gazes around me landed on me like needles, piercing my skin.
My fingertips dug tightly into my palm. The pain kept me clear-headed. I took a deep breath, lifted my veil, and threw it aside.
Seeing my dark expression, Ethan finally realized something was wrong.
"You're angry?"
I looked at him, my voice trembling slightly.
"I never said I wanted to participate in this game. And my relatives are already here. Do you really plan to replace the bride and complete the wedding ceremony?"
Ethan pressed his lips together, his tone turning serious.
"Jenna, it's not that I want to replace you. Since you joined the game, whether you did it willingly or not, you have to follow the rules."
Sophie deliberately blinked beside him, her face full of innocence.
"Jenna, you're not a sore loser, are you?"
She clicked her tongue softly, wrapped an arm around Ethan's neck, and raised an eyebrow.
"Forget it, bro. It's not like this is the first time you've given up your friends because of her."
The guys who had been cheering moments ago joined in as well.
"Exactly. Sophie's birthday was a few days ago, but you ditched our guys' night just to go meet Jenna's family. We've known each other since we were kids. Don't tell me you've forgotten that the two of you even used to sleep in the same bed."
My heart sank.
I instinctively turned to look at Ethan.
He had explained it to me countless times before, saying that he and Sophie were nothing more than friends and that there had never been anything else between them.
I believed him.
"That was just because we were drunk. Don't twist things around!"
He turned around nervously to explain to me, then grabbed my wrist and lowered his voice.
"Everyone is watching. A bet is a bet. Let Sophie put on the wedding dress later and stand on stage to give everyone a surprise. She'll only show up for a moment and come down. I promise it won't take long."
But my relatives, my parents' business partners, and even my 80-year-old grandmother had traveled a long way to attend my wedding.
Doing this would only humiliate the entire Shaw family.
I looked at him silently, then slowly smiled.
"You're right."
His eyes lit up instantly, thinking I had agreed.
"I'm done playing this game. And I'm not getting married anymore."
