A Wrong Marriage, An Unexpected Baby

Chapter 9

~ Knock Knock ~

" Sir , may I come in ? " Aurora asked in her timid voice as she finally came to stand behind the closed door .

The nameplate , adorned with a radiant shine , taunted her at that very moment , igniting a deep sense of dread within her . Written upon it was the name she detested with such intensity , to the extent that it stirred a nauseating feeling within her being . 'Arthur Chevalier - CFO of C&B Enterprise ' , it boldly announced .

As she stood before her boss's door , a flood of memories rushed back , vividly replaying the day he attempted to physically assault her under the guise of work .

**** Flashback ****

" Miss Barrett . The board is quite impressed with your work . The way you professionally dealt with the last project , indeed proved your capability without any doubt . So , I was thinking that I should pass on your name for a promotion . " The head of the financial department of C&B Enterprise , Arthur Chevalier , spoke with a weird smile on his face , which definitely made Aurora a bit uncomfortable for some reason .

Though she could not realise what the thing was which Aurora did not like about him at all , she tried to stay as composed as possible while she was called into his office during her work hours . Aurora even forced a smile on her face just to be formal with her boss and replied ,

" Thank you sir . I am looking forward to it . "

Yes , even when she was a bit hesitant , Aurora was happy as well , as the news of her promotion definitely made her day . Because she felt like her hard work had finally started to show its results after years .

But what happened next turned her entire world upside down in no time as she could not believe what she had just heard .

" But , I have a condition , Miss Barrett .

If you want me to forward your name to the board for the promotion , I need you to do something for me first .

You know what , I have been watching you since the day you entered our company . You are quite skilled in your work , I must say . In fact , you are good at so many things , only if you try and acknowledge yourself a bit more than you usually do . " Arthur paused for a while and stood up from his chair with an ominous intention . Shoving his hands in the pockets of his trousers , he coldly approached Aurora in an imposing manner .

The girl , who was standing with her head down until now , slowly started to lift up her head to meet his eyes as she was startled by such a comment .

" I don't understand , sir . " The sudden confusion prompted her to part her lips finally , as she just could not understand how all this was related to her work .

" I know . Even when you are one of the best in your field , you are such a naive girl when it comes to other things . " Lifting the corner of his lips cunningly , Arthur said while he leaned against the edge of the desk relaxingly , only to glare at Aurora without any shame .

" Other things ? " Aurora asked right away , as she was still unaware of what Arthur was intending to convey .

But it seemed like her one single query caused Arthur to finally take the leap as he walked close to her side in no time and grabbed her by her shoulder without giving her any time to avoid . His treacherous hand did not just stop there and started to slip down along with his slender arm in the most disgusting way .

Aurora understood .

She finally understood what her boss was trying to say all this time .

He was asking her to use her body to get a promotion , wasn't he ?

Until now , Aurora could not understand what was making her uncomfortable , but now she did . It was his gaze . Arthur's gaze at her body was always somewhat inappropriate .

Just when Aurora guessed , her fears came true as Arther's words confirmed all her doubts in the very next second .

" If you really want the promotion , then look for me in the suit no. 1008 of the Paradise Royal , tonight . I will be waiting . " As soon as those vicious words skipped his lips , Aurora's body shivered in utter disgust to the point that she could not tolerate his hand on her skin for another second .

And as a result , she acted without thinking ahead and harshly shook Arthur's hand off her body in no time and stepped back with absolute hatred .

" I think there is a huge misunderstanding , sir . I did not join the C&B Enterprise to become a mistress . And certainly I do not want a promotion at the cost of my reputation here . So , I will pretend that we never had this conversation . " Those words came out of Aurora's mouth so sternly that it even startled Aurther Chavelier .

For him , it might be the first time that a girl had rejected his offer right on his face so boldly . Of course , it had to hurt his ego in some way .

" Did you just say ' reputation ' ? Are you trying to reject me , Aurora ? You b***h .

Okay , fine . If that is what you want , we are going to play according to your way . I will see what kind of reputation you are boasting about right now . Because , the moment you step out of my office , I will make sure to ruin your image that you will definitely have to come and beg me for my attention one day .

Mark my word . I will certainly make that happen . " Though Arther's words threatened Aurora , she believed that the situation would calm down one day if she stayed true to herself and devoted her passion only to the work .

But what she did not know was the fact that it was also the day since her miserable life was going to begin .

Though Aurora had made it clear that she wanted nothing beyond a professional relationship with a married man like Chevalier , he responded with a spiteful threat to tarnish her reputation if she resisted his advances . Initially , Aurora believed that she could navigate any situation with integrity and honesty . Unfortunately , the following day, the insidious tendrils of rumors coiled around her , disproving her hopeful optimism . The office gossip mill went into overdrive , spinning falsehoods about Aurora's character and intentions . Colleagues who had once treated her with respect now wore skeptical glances , questioning her every move . It seemed as though her refusal to submit to Chevalier's desires had placed her at the mercy of his vindictiveness .

Because , Arthur definitely did what he said .

Standing in front of the closed door of that vicious man , Aurora once again remembered her past and the very thought of him made her nauseous .

Despite the weight of injustice and humiliation on her shoulders , Aurora resolved to face the trials ahead , but being alone on the thorny path to justice , she could not go far . Even when she was determined that she would not allow Chevalier's poison to dictate her future , Aurora failed over and again until now . So , clutching onto her integrity , she pushed open the door at last , determined to confront the man once again in her life who had caused her so much pain and suffering .

And just when she was about to walk inside , the hand which grabbed her strongly by her shoulder reminded her that she was not alone this time .

Gabriel , who was standing behind her back just like a strong pillar of strength , matched his step with his wife and entered the office at last .

" It is so much fun to finally see you crawling inside my room ... " Arthur almost choked on his own words just when he finally realised that Aurora did not come alone , as the very familiar man who was standing by her side that day was no one but the CEO of this company , Gabriel Castellanos and also the younger brother of his wife , Patricia .

" What ... what are you doing here , Gabriel ? " Regaining his composure as quickly as possible from the sudden shock , Arthur finally stood up and rushed to greet Gabriel with an awkward smile plastered on his face . But , instead of shaking his hand , Gabriel glared at his brother-in-law for sometime , which caused Arthur to almost sweat even when the room was fully air conditioned .

" I just came to greet you but now I am curious about the fun you have just mentioned . May I know what it is , so that I can join you and laugh together ? " Gabriel's sudden friendly words scared Arthur to the point that he almost felt threatened by him and failed to decide how he was supposed to react at that moment .

" Ah !!! It was nothing . Anyway , how are you doing these days ?

You know , Patricia was insisting on visiting you for the past few days . So , we might go to your place at the end of this week if that is fine with you . " Arthur said , attempting to change the topic , but that did not at all help him to escape the furious gaze of Gabriel .

His gaze stayed the same , irrespective of the fact that Arthur tried his best to ease the moment for a little bit to save himself from getting caught by his brother - in -law . Because if that ever happens , Arthur would not only get stripped of his status and power in this society , but his relationship with his wife will also be ruined .

But what Gabriel said next , turned Arthur absolutely pale as an expression of horror soon filled his dark eyes in no time .

" Everything is fine , as long as my wife , Aurora , has no problem with it , right honey ? " The sudden news from the young master Castellanos not only shook Arthur but Aurora as well , as she was expecting the least to hear her husband disclosing the truth in such circumstances all of a sudden .
