Where are we going? What does he know that I do not? How will we get away?
Taisa is slower to return to the chamber than I am, but she still catches me with the small, creased paper clutched in my fingers.
“What is it, My Sovereign? Your face is colored.”
I cannot show this to anyone, not even Taisa.
Her stealth, while usually undervalued, will not get me out of the compound undetected. Not this time. I need blood from a Class III’s finger to unlock the bioreaders on the compound’s exterior doors. Taisa’s blood will not work—surely they’ll be watching her closely. But I have coins to spare, and underpaid allies who work in the compound. Surely one of them will help me.
