Return to the Beach House
Emily couldn't believe she was back at the beach house. It had been years since she'd last visited, but everything looked exactly the same. The white picket fence, the weathered shingles, and the old wooden deck that led to the beach - it was like stepping back in time.
She took a deep breath of salty sea air and closed her eyes, letting the memories flood back. She remembered the long lazy days of summer, the endless hours spent building sandcastles, and the late-night bonfires on the beach.
But this time, things were different. Emily wasn't here for a vacation. She was here because she had nowhere else to go. She had lost her job, her apartment, and her boyfriend all in the same week. It was like the universe was telling her it was time for a change.
Emily walked up the steps to the front door and fished the key out of her pocket. The door creaked as she pushed it open and stepped inside. The beach house was just as she remembered it, but it felt smaller somehow, more intimate.
She walked through the empty rooms, each one triggering a different memory. In the living room, she remembered watching movies with her family on rainy days. In the kitchen, she remembered baking cookies with her grandmother. And in the bedroom, she remembered curling up with a book and falling asleep to the sound of the waves crashing outside.
But as she stood in the middle of the empty house, Emily realized she was alone. She didn't have a job, a boyfriend, or any real direction in life. She had come here hoping to find answers, but now she wasn't so sure.
Suddenly, Emily heard a knock at the door. She hurried to answer it, wondering who could be visiting her so soon after arriving. When she opened the door, she was surprised to see a familiar face.
"Jack?" she said, staring at the tall, sun-kissed surfer standing on her doorstep. "What are you doing here?"
Jack grinned and pulled her into a tight hug. "Welcome back, Em," he said. "I heard you were in town and wanted to stop by and say hi."
Emily couldn't help but smile. Jack had been her best friend growing up, but they had lost touch over the years. Seeing him again felt like a lifeline.
"Thanks, Jack," she said, feeling grateful for the unexpected company. "Come on in. Want to catch up over some iced tea?"
As Emily led Jack into the kitchen, she couldn't help but wonder if this summer at the beach house might turn out to be exactly what she needed after all.
