CHAPTER 1: The Night It Began
The forest should not have been silent.
Not like this.
Emilia stopped walking.
Something was wrong.
The air felt… heavy. Not cold. Not warm. Just wrong. Like the world had paused and forgotten how to move again.
She tightened her grip on the small bag in her hand, her heartbeat slowly rising for reasons she could not explain.
This path was familiar.
She had walked it a hundred times.
But tonight…
It did not feel like hers anymore.
A branch snapped behind her.
She turned instantly.
Nothing.
Just darkness stretching between the trees.
Her breath slowed.
“You are overthinking,” she whispered to herself.
But her body did not believe it.
Because something deep inside her…
Was already awake.
Watching.
Waiting.
Another sound.
Closer this time.
Not a branch.
A step.
Her chest tightened.
“Who is there?” she called out.
Silence answered.
Too fast.
Too clean.
Like whatever made that sound knew exactly when to stop.
Emilia took a slow step back.
Then another.
Her eyes scanned the shadows, searching for movement, for anything that could explain the feeling creeping under her skin.
Nothing.
And that was the problem.
Because the forest was never this quiet.
Never.
A low wind passed through the trees, but even that felt wrong. It did not move naturally. It slid past her, brushing against her skin like a warning.
Her pulse jumped.
Something was definitely here.
And it was not trying to hide.
It was watching.
The realization hit hard.
She was not alone.
“Enough,” she said under her breath, forcing herself to stay calm. “Just go home.”
She turned.
Took a step forward.
Then stopped.
Because the path ahead…
Was gone.
Her breath caught.
The trail she had just been walking on had disappeared. Not faded. Not shifted.
Gone.
Replaced by dense trees that had not been there before.
“That is not possible,” she whispered.
Her voice sounded smaller now.
The silence swallowed it instantly.
She turned again, faster this time.
The path behind her was still there.
But it looked… different.
Longer.
Darker.
As if it was pulling away from her.
A cold wave moved through her chest.
No.
This was not normal.
This was not confusion.
This was wrong.
Completely wrong.
“Okay…” she exhaled slowly. “Think.”
Her mind tried to find logic.
Tried to hold onto something real.
But the deeper she thought…
The less everything made sense.
And then she felt it.
A presence.
Close.
Too close.
Right behind her.
Her body froze.
She did not turn immediately.
Because something inside her warned her not to.
Her heartbeat pounded louder.
Slower.
Heavier.
As if it was syncing with something else.
Not hers.
Not human.
“Run.”
The voice came out of nowhere.
Not loud.
Not soft.
Clear.
Inside her head.
Emilia’s eyes widened.
“What—”
“Run.”
This time it was sharper.
Urgent.
And real.
Her body reacted before her mind could catch up.
She ran.
Fast.
Branches scraped against her arms as she pushed forward, ignoring the sting, ignoring the panic rising in her chest.
Her breath came uneven.
Her steps uneven.
But she did not stop.
Could not stop.
Because now…
She heard it.
Something moving behind her.
Not one.
More than one.
And they were not trying to be quiet anymore.
They were chasing her.
Her pulse spiked.
Faster.
Louder.
Her legs burned, but she pushed harder, forcing herself forward as the forest seemed to close in around her.
The trees felt tighter.
Closer.
Like they were watching too.
Guiding.
Or trapping.
A growl echoed behind her.
Low.
Deep.
Not human.
Her heart dropped.
“No…” she whispered.
This was not happening.
It could not be happening.
But it was.
Another growl.
Closer.
Too close.
She risked a glance back.
And immediately wished she had not.
Eyes.
Glowing.
Moving fast between the trees.
Multiple.
Tracking her.
Hunting.
Fear slammed into her chest.
Real.
Cold.
Unforgiving.
She stumbled slightly, catching herself just in time before falling.
“Keep running,” the voice inside her urged.
“I am trying!” she gasped.
The ground beneath her feet shifted slightly, uneven, unfamiliar.
This was not the same forest anymore.
It had changed.
Or she had.
Another growl.
Right behind her.
Her body reacted instinctively.
She turned sharply, her foot slipping on loose dirt as she fell hard to the ground.
Pain shot through her palms.
Her breath knocked out of her chest.
She tried to get up.
But it was too late.
They were already there.
Surrounding her.
Silent now.
Watching.
Emilia’s chest rose and fell rapidly as she looked around.
Shapes moved between the shadows.
Large.
Fast.
Not fully visible.
But enough.
She was trapped.
A low rumble filled the air.
Not from one.
From all of them.
Waiting.
Her mind raced.
Think.
Move.
Do something.
But her body…
Refused.
Because something deeper had taken over.
Something ancient.
Something she did not understand.
Her heartbeat slowed.
Not from calm.
From something else.
Something that did not belong to fear.
The creatures stepped closer.
One of them emerged fully from the shadows.
And for a moment…
Everything stopped.
It was not just an animal.
It was something more.
Its eyes locked onto hers.
Sharp.
Intelligent.
Aware.
Not hunting blindly.
Choosing.
The air between them tightened.
And then…
Something inside her responded.
Without permission.
Without control.
The ground beneath her hand trembled.
Slightly.
Then again.
Stronger.
The creature stopped.
Its gaze shifted.
Not to her face.
To her hand.
Emilia frowned.
Confused.
“What is happening…” she whispered.
The voice returned.
Calm now.
Not urgent.
“Do not be afraid.”
Her breath shook.
“I am surrounded by whatever these things are, I think I have the right to be afraid.”
“Not of them.”
The words landed differently.
Her pulse slowed slightly.
“Then what?” she asked.
A pause.
Then the answer came.
“Of yourself.”
The ground trembled again.
This time…
It did not stop.
The creatures reacted instantly.
Stepping back.
Not retreating.
Cautious.
Watching.
Waiting.
Emilia’s chest tightened.
“I am not doing this,” she said.
But even as she said it…
She knew that was not true.
Because the moment she placed her hand fully against the ground…
Everything changed.
A low vibration spread outward.
Through the soil.
Through the air.
Through her.
The forest responded.
The trees shifted slightly.
The air thickened.
The silence broke.
And the creatures…
Stepped back.
Not slowly.
Immediately.
As if something had just told them they no longer had control.
Emilia’s breath caught.
Her eyes widened.
“What… is this?”
No answer came.
Because she already knew.
Not clearly.
Not fully.
But enough.
This was not normal.
She was not normal.
The realization settled deep.
Heavy.
Unavoidable.
The creature in front of her lowered its head slightly.
Not in submission.
Not in defeat.
Recognition.
Her heart skipped.
“No…” she whispered.
But it was already happening.
Something had changed.
Something irreversible.
The ground pulsed one last time.
Then everything went still.
Completely still.
The creatures slowly retreated.
One by one.
Disappearing back into the darkness.
Not running.
Not fleeing.
Leaving.
Like they had seen enough.
Like they understood something she did not.
Emilia stayed where she was.
Her hand still pressed against the ground.
Her breathing uneven.
Her thoughts scattered.
“What just happened…” she whispered.
The voice answered one last time.
“This is only the beginning.”
Her chest tightened.
Beginning of what?
She pulled her hand away slowly.
The ground settled.
The forest returned.
But not completely.
Because something still lingered.
Inside her.
Awake.
Watching.
Waiting.
Emilia pushed herself to her feet, her legs unsteady as she looked around.
The path was back.
Clear.
Familiar.
Like nothing had happened.
But she knew better.
Because she could still feel it.
Under her skin.
In her chest.
Something new.
Something powerful.
Something dangerous.
She took a step forward.
Then stopped.
Because for the first time…
She noticed something else.
Someone else.
Standing at the edge of the trees.
Watching her.
A man.
Tall.
Still.
Unmoving.
His eyes locked onto hers.
Sharp.
Knowing.
Like he had been there the whole time.
Like he had seen everything.
Emilia’s breath slowed.
“Who are you?” she asked.
He did not answer.
Did not move.
Just watched.
Then finally…
He spoke.
“You were not supposed to survive that.”
The words sent a chill through her.
“What are you talking about?”
A pause.
Then he said quietly,
“We have a problem.”
Her chest tightened.
“What problem?”
His gaze did not leave hers.
“You.”
Silence fell.
Heavy.
Unavoidable.
And in that moment…
Emilia understood something terrifying.
This was not over.
It had not ended in the forest.
It had started there.
Because the moment she survived…
She became something others were already afraid of.
And someone…
Was already planning what to do about it.
