Chapter 19

Call in the Big Guns Everlee It’s been 2 weeks since I found the threatening note. I’ve been assigned a personal guard who is to be within 10 feet of me at all times unless Lennox says otherwise. The day shift guards are Israel and Lathan. I’m told they are two of the best warriors in the pack. Israel appears to be mid forties, has salt and pepper hair and beard and kind eyes. He is very sweet and easy to talk to. Lathan is a bit younger maybe 37, his brown hair is cut short, no facial hair, and striking blue eyes. He is polite but clearly all business. His attitude toward me is more militant than friendly. I can appreciate him wanting to do a good job and have every confidence in his ability to protect me, but I wish he would speak to me, more than to inform me of the Alphas orders. I often find myself wondering if his wolf has a military hair cut as well. I much prefer the days when Israel is my guard, and today happens to be one of those days. I finish up in the bathroom and head to the closet. Lennox has long been gone this morning, even after coming to bed in the wee hours of the night. He is so filled with emotion about the note, anger, fear, and a strong taste for revenge for them threatening me in the first place. It’s hard to know how to help him, so I mostly stay out of his way. Though our s*x drive hasn’t slowed, our schedules make finding the time hard. I miss him fiercely, and I can feel through the mate bond he feels the same. I’ve been filling my days by planning the spring solstice with Sophia and studying supernatural history. There is so much to learn, some days I’m overwhelmed with the information, especially about the Fae as it existed before the Great War. I’m so happy Violet decided to help with party planning. And having the baby around is a welcome distraction. Though it’s brought up a lot of questions in me. Now is obviously not the right time to try for a baby, if children are even an option. No one knows if a werewolf and a fairy can procreate, or what the result will be if they can. All questions that must be pushed to the back of my kind for now. Especially since the Werewolf Elders haven’t gotten back to us about our requested appointment. Today Sophia has decided we need a girls day. A break from all the work and studying. So she has planned a surprise for me, which is exciting, but I’m now realizing I have no idea what to wear. Everlee “Sophia, what should I wear for this surprise you have planned?” Sophia “Slacks and a t-shirt will be Fine. Nothing fancy. Just be sure to wear the boots I had sent up to your room. I’ll meet you downstairs in 20 minutes for breakfast.” Slacks? Nothing fancy? Neither of those things sounded like Sophia. She is always decked out in the most fabulous pants suits money can buy. Red-bottoms line her closet like a shoe rainbow. A pair for every occasion. And her ability to accessorize is borderline witchcraft. This really is going to be a surprise. I find a pair of jeans and a t-shirt and throw my hair into a ponytail. When I go back out to the bedroom I notice a shoebox on the chair. Inside is a nice pair of leather boots. Not really my style with the pointed toe and snakeskin though. What on Earth could we be doing that I have to wear these? I slip them on and open the door. Israel is, of course, already waiting for me. “Good morning, Luna! Are we heading down for breakfast?” “Hi Israel, yes, I’m meeting Sophia downstairs. So, How was little Ari’s soccer game yesterday?” “It was great! He made his first goal! He was so proud of himself, we took him for ice cream after.” “Aww, yay! You must bring him and Eliza to visit soon. You’ve told me so much about them, they feel like family already.” “I’m sure Eliza would love that too. I’ll let her know.” We reach the dining room and Sophia and Violet are waiting. “Vi! I didn’t know you were coming today, where is the baby?” “Sophia invited me and Donavan’s mother gladly offered to keep her today. I’m grateful for a little time away.” We sit down for breakfast and my thoughts drift as we wait on Donna to bring our plates. The day Violette gave birth was such a happy day. We could use that kind of energy in the pack house again. It was the morning after the New Years ball. We had all waited outside the room at the pack hospital to hear about her arrival. Donavan could hardly contain his excitement as he erupted from the room. “It’s a girl!” We all cheered and hugs and handshakes were exchanged. Sophia and I went in to see Violette and were shocked to see a head full of light purple hair peeking out of the pale pink swaddle, and her fathers dark complexion and honey colored eyes were the perfect contrast. “She is perfect Vi.” Sophia placed a motherly kiss on Violets forehead. “Thank you. I can’t believe I have a daughter!” Sophia hugged Violettes mother, Beta Marissa. “Congratulations, Grandma!” “Thank you, Sophia, it’s the most amazing feeling! With any luck, that son of yours will have a whole litter of grandpups following you around.” I smile politely and direct my attention to Vi. “What’s her name?” I asked. “Lavender Claire. The closest I can get to naming her after myself.” “It’s perfect!” Lennox “What do you mean, you have no new leads?! It’s been 2 weeks and we are no closer to figuring out who this threat is than the day it happened! Someone entered my pack house with ill intent towards our Luna, my mate! How did they get in to pack territory undetected?! I didn’t feel a breach. That means they are either a witch, working with a witch, or worst of all, a pack member.” Donavan hangs his head. I know he is feeling the weight of his failure. “I’m sorry, Alpha. I really am. Do you really believe it may be a pack member? I have a hard time believing we have a traitor in Black River.” “Exactly, my point, it’s hard to believe therefore it’s the perfect cover. But no, I really don’t think so. Still, we would be naive to rule it out based on our feelings alone. Have we heard back from the Elders? I put in a request for an appearance weeks ago!” “No we have not, I’ll call this afternoon, and I’ll check again for witch activity in the area. As far as the pack member, I honestly wouldn’t even know where to begin.” “You handle the witch angle, if there is a traitor in my pack, I’ll find them myself.” A growl escapes as Drake tries to take over. I haven’t let him out since we found the note. I can’t risk not being in control if something happens. He is just as fiercely protective of Everlee and the pack as me though, and the thought of a traitor in Black River, gives him a taste for blood. I pick up the phone and dial the only person who can help me navigate this disaster. “Zeke, take the next flight home. Your Alpha requires your assistance.” “Yes Alpha. I’ll update you with my ETA asap.” Zeke After the brief but important call from Lennox I’m on high alert. He wouldn’t call me back unless it’s really bad. I’m betting it has something to do with the note Everlee found a couple weeks back. I wanted to go home when he first called me about it, but he insisted on me staying in Greenland to finalize the peace treaty with the Winter Eclipse pack. Ajax could tell something was off as well so I book the red eye home and head to say my farewell to Alpha Malik and Luna Asta. “Thank you so much for your hospitality. I’ve truly enjoyed my time in your territory. Please feel free to come visit Black River anytime.” “It’s our pleasure, Beta Zeke. Malik and I have enjoyed having you. We are very happy with the treaty. I hope all is well at home.” “I’m sure it’s nothing major, Luna. Alpha Lennox is still adjusting to having a mate, I’m sure he just needs my assistance with pack duties. I’ve been gone for a couple months now, I’m sure he is a mess without me. Haha” “Oh, yes. I remember that first year after we were mated. It is hard to concentrate on much else, even as an Alpha. Beta Augo, pretty much handled all pack business that he could for me during those first few months.” “Yes, I’ve heard.” There is an awkward silence as they remember I’m still unmated. Although I know these treaties and business trips need to be done, I’m sure that Lennox and Everlee have sent me on this worldwide mission on more than pack business. They are hoping I will find my mate in one of these packs. So am I. I appreciate that they care enough to let me go search for her. But that’s also how I know that whatever I’m being called home for, is in fact more than just day to day pack business. Lennox is a good Alpha, distracted by his new mate or not, he can manage without me for a while. The flight home is eventless aside from Ajax pacing around in my mind. Ajax “Alpha needs us. We should have been home already. We stayed gone too long.” Zeke “Ajax, calm down. You know that Lennox and Drake can protect the pack just fine on their own, and Donovan is home too. Our pack is strong. I’m sure everything is ok. Besides, you were just as excited as me to get the chance to go search for our mate. Whatever this problem is at home, we need to fix it and get back out there and find her.” Ajax “Grrrr. Fine.” He puts a mental wall up so that I can’t speak to him. He knows I’m right. We have put pack business ahead of ourselves for too long. Now that Black River has both it’s Alpha and Luna, its time to concentrate on finding our mate. Everlee “Horseback riding? We’re going horseback riding?!” “Yay! I haven’t been since Donavan and I were in Greece a couple summers ago.” “I’ve never been close enough to a horse to even think about getting on one. Maybe I’ll just watch.” “Oh, nonsense dear! It really is amazing. You’ll love it.” We get out of the car and walk toward the stable where a woman is waiting at the door. “Hi ladies! I’m Eva and I’ll be your guide today. Let me introduce you to your horses.” We follow her through the giant barn door and down a walkway covered in hay. The stalls each hold a different horse. They really are beautiful creatures. “This here is Maple, she is coming with us, next to her is Onyx, he can come, and the one on the end is Willow, she’s great for inexperienced riders, so she will be yours.” I don’t even bother asking how she knows I’m the inexperienced rider. I must look like a deer in headlights, I most definitely stand out from the crowd. We all go to get acquainted with our horses and as I approached Willow, I feel a strong sense of calm. Her dark eyes seem kind and curious. Her coat is white and she looks majestic. I may actually like this. I look over at Sophia and smile. How does she always know the right thing to know?
