Prologue
(Anna’s P.O.V) My paws were running on top of the soft wet ground. My white fur flowing in the wind as I ran against it. My mind racing. Alpha Kayden. I was mated to the Alpha of our pack! How could this possibly be? Had the moon goddess made a mistake? And poor James. The look on his face when he realized we weren’t a match. The way that they both argued tonight, both of them making themselves look a damn fool. I could not think about who I had to pick, decide who would become my soulmate and my family. James was my family. James Herbert, my boyfriend of two years. He and I become friends freshman year of high school. His dad had just passed away, during a rogue attack. His dad was one of our best warriors for the pack, it was a tragedy we all felt. James needed a friend, and I was there for him. James and I started dating when I turned 16. When you turn 16 years old in a pack, it’s kind of a big deal. That is the age you get your wolf. People are thrown huge parties, and at the end of the night, you shape shift into your wolf to show everyone in the pack what you look like. On my 16th birthday, I had a huge party. Most members of the pack were there, dancing and singing along to the music. At the end of the night, I did my first shift. I turned into a beautiful bright white wolf, blue eyes and a tiny black heart on my left hind leg. I like to think of it as a birth mark. I ran around in my new form, feeling free. I could finally mindlink with the others in my pack, who also had their wolf. James was 6 months older than me, so he had experienced this already. James was a grey wolf, with green eyes. That night, after I shifted back and got dressed, James told me that he thought I was the most beautiful wolf and woman he had ever seen. We knew we didn’t get our mates until we were 18, but we just thought we would reject them. We thought we could handle the mate bond tugging at our hearts. James kissed me that night, and he has been on my side ever since, we drove our first car together, graduated high school together and even picked the same local community college to attend next fall. James was my family, how could I leave him for someone I barely even know? I stopped running once I got to a nearby creek. I dropped my head to take a drink of water. After a minute or so, I trotted over to the tree to sit and think. The run had helped me to clear my mind a bit. As I got near to the tree, I felt like I was being watched. I couldn’t explain this feeling, but I could feel eyes staring into me. I suddenly heard a low growl but I couldn’t see where it was coming from. My eyes darted from tree to tree, and yet I couldn’t find anyone or anything in the wood next to me. Before I could move, a huge brown wolf came barreling out of the woods straight towards me. I didn’t have any time to think. I darted out of the way, just in the nick of time. I wondered who this wolf was, and why it was running towards me! Were we under attack? If so, I needed to warn the others. I ran as fast as I could towards the pack-house, even though it was 2 miles away from us. I realized just then how far I had ran before, away from the chaos. The brown wolf was gaining on me, it was fast. I felt my hind paws come out from under me as the brown wolf scratched my ankles. I tumbled down the hill that was before us. As I got to the bottom, before I could even get my balance, the brown wolf was over top of me, snarling it’s teeth and looking straight into my eyes. The brown wolf had black eyes, and they looked glossed over. I thought this was it, I thought this was when I died. I closed my eyes, scared to die at the bottom of this hill, without ever being able to say goodbye to loved ones.
