Kai ran like a shadow through the trees, and we followed.
I kept Ember pressed against my chest, one arm wrapped tight around her small body while the other hand sparked with barely controlled magic. Every instinct screamed this was wrong. That trusting Kai if it even was Kai would get us killed.
But Kade was beside me. His wolves flanking us. And the Council's howls were getting closer.
So I ran.
"There's a river half a mile north," Kai called back without slowing. "They'll lose our scent in the water."
"For how long?" Kade demanded.
"Long enough."
I wanted to ask him everything. How he survived. Where he'd been. Why he was working for the monsters who destroyed our pack.
But Ember whimpered against my neck, and all my questions died.
