Darkness and Thorns tells the story of a young girl whose life is shaped by loss, poverty, and responsibility. After the death of her father, she is forced to leave school and step into adulthood far too early.

As her mother falls ill, the burden of caring for the family rests on her shoulders. As the eldest child, she becomes the foundation of the household, sacrificing her dreams to keep her family alive.

This story explores the harsh realities faced by many young girls, the weight of responsibility, and the quiet strength born from suffering. Darkness and Thorns is a moving reflection on resilience, sacrifice, and survival in the face of hardship.

CHAPTER: 1 The time was 6:30 Am on Saturday; I was standing beside the window facing the street watching students who were dressed up in elementary and middle school uniforms. They were beautiful. From the students who were passing by the street, nearly all of them were boys. I was waiting for Deeqa and Ubax when they would be pass by the road, when my mom, who was standing in the yard yelled, “Naayaa, is it, the time of statistics?” I tried to ignore her, but it did not work. She came to me “Your brother is late for school, and you are also standing there and watching other kids going to their schools. Go and prepare for his uniform while he is having his breakfast.” My mom, Xaawa, is in her 30s when I do my estimation, because most of our people do not know when they were born, just like her. However, my grandmother used to say that my mom was born in a rainy season, in a village called Frdo laguxidh. Today in the morning I could not see Deeqa and Ubax when they were passing by the school. Since, I have been busy preparing Ahmed for his school. A year ago, I was also a student in the same class as Deeqa and Ubax. We were in 4th grade. Often we used to do homework, though I did not like it due to the fact that I didn’t have time to do it. My mathematics teacher called saeid, and he used to say and motivate me, “If you spend enough time studying, you will be the first person in the class." Deeqa’s mother, Khadiija, every morning while she goes shopping in the market. She always passes by my mother's meat vendor to pick up our lunch groceries from her, like rice or pasta, meat and vegetables. I usually leave school at 12:00 noon, then I pass by Aunt Khadija’s house to grab the groceries. Her house is located between my house and the school. After that, I do a quick cooking. Personally, I don’t know when I learned how to cook, I still know myself in the kitchen. Even if Hussein is young, he is a wise boy. Now he is in grade one. His school starts at 1:30pm and the school is 15 minutes away on foot from our house. However, he had to have his lunch at 1 so he could prepare himself in 15 minutes. Earlier, whenever I get late from school, he goes to Aunt Khadija’s house to bring the groceries and start the charcoal for cooking. While doing that, he dirtied his white uniform. I told and stopped him not to prepare the charcoal for me, but at the same time not to dress up his uniform before lunch. We do our monthly exam at the end of the month and at the end of the day, we start it at.......
