Shadows of the forge
The clang of metal rang through the small forge, sparks dancing like fireflies in the dim light. Aaron’s hands, rough and calloused from years of labor, moved with precision as he hammered glowing steel against the anvil. The rhythm was steady, practiced — the kind of work that made him invisible, just another poor blacksmith’s son in the Black Rock Pack.
But invisibility suited him. At least, that’s what his parents always said. Better to blend in. Better to be overlooked.
Aaron wiped sweat from his brow, his dark hair clinging to his forehead. The forge smelled of smoke and iron, but beneath it lingered the faint trace of soap — the special one his mother insisted he use every morning. It dulled something in him, something dangerous. Something he had only begun to understand when his wolf first stirred two years ago.
He could still remember the night vividly. The shift had come early, the pain tearing through his body, bones snapping and reforming until his wolf stood trembling under the moon. And with that first howl had come raw power — strength that terrified even him. His father’s face had been grave when he told him the truth: that their bloodline carried more than anyone in the Black Rock Pack could ever know.
“Never show your full strength,” his father had warned. “Never let them see what you are.”
So Aaron learned to lose. When Trent, the Alpha’s arrogant son, shoved him into the dirt during training or mocked him for being the son of nobodies, Aaron would take the hits, fight back just enough to keep his dignity, and then fall. It wasn’t weakness. It was survival.
Still, the fire of resentment smoldered deep inside him — not just for himself, but for all the omegas who suffered under Trent’s careless cruelty. Aaron had become a quiet protector, the one who would stand between bullies and those too beaten down to fight back. He didn’t win every battle, but he didn’t have to. Sometimes, just standing his ground was enough.
Tonight, though, the forge was his refuge. Each strike of the hammer bled frustration into the steel, each spark a reminder of the power he kept locked away. He thought of Trent’s sneer, the way he strutted through the packhouse halls like he already wore his father’s Alpha title. He thought of the whispers — the talk of a mating alliance, of a powerful Alpha’s daughter soon to arrive.
Aaron didn’t know her name. He didn’t care. Whatever deal the Black Rock Pack struck would have nothing to do with him. He was just the blacksmith’s son. The omega’s boy. The nobody.
Or so they believed.
Far above the forge, the moonlight spilled through the night sky, brushing over Aaron’s skin. His wolf stirred restlessly, pressing against the walls of his control, aching for something unknown. Something just beyond reach.
