The Silver Lining

Camille's POV “Congratulations, you are pregnant with twins.” The female doctor smiled at me. “Twins?” Lying on the hospital bed, I looked at the doctor in shock. Was I hearing things? How could I be pregnant with twin twins? After leaving the pack, I had started feeling sick, overwhelmed with nausea and nonstop dizzy spells. I was emotionally drained which took a huge toll on my health. My wolf was also distant and unresponsive. I had come to the doctor for a check up, little did I know that I was in for a big surprise. “Yes, twins.” She affirmed, showing me the tiny lives growing on the scan screen. My eyes welled up with tears as I listened to the heartbeat of my healthy babies. The doctor prescribed me some vitamins and folic acid and I left the hospital feeling dazed and in a bit of a dilemma. I subconsciously rubbed my belly and whispered, “Don't worry my babies, if daddy doesn’t want you, mummy will protect and love you with all her heart.” With my luggage in my hand, I headed to the train station with no particular destination in my mind. The Ruby pack was home for as long as I could remember, and I had no family and relatives to rely on. I was all alone in this big, cold world. Once again thoughts of Gustavo crossed my mind, causing my heart to ache and tears to well in my eyes. Just as I was engrossed in my thoughts, I watched a middle aged man trip and fall and hit his head hard on the floor of the train station. Alarmed, I rushed to the man’s side, to see if I could be of assistance to him. He had a cut on the side of his face and was having a concussion. “Sir, are you alright?” I asked him, shocked by his current state. I pulled out my phone to call an ambulance but before I could do anything, the man held me tightly on the wrist, his grip too tight for someone who just hit his head. “You’re Camille Adriana James, right?” He asked, his voice heavy with shock. “How… Do you know my name?” My eyes widened with my name rolling off his tongue. A name that was originally given to me at birth and hidden from the world. ******** Three years later>>> The coffee on the table remained untouched and eventually turned cold once again. I carefully stroked my paint brush on my drawing, accentuating the lines and making the painting more pronounced. It was the finishing touch of my creation and I wanted it to be perfect. “You have done it again Miss. Camille.” Paige, who had just entered my drawing room, gasped while standing at the door. She stared at the painting of the Big Ben, also known as the Great clock of Westminster, the biggest clock in London with wide eyes and open mouth. “So this is the masterpiece you created in just three sleepless nights,” she marveled, stepping into the room like she was in a trance. “You are really gifted beyond words!” She exclaimed. I was the most renowned fashion designer in the country. My arts spoke for themselves, displayed in huge arts galleries around the world and sold for as high as a hundred million euros per painting. With my extraordinary ability to understand people’s emotions, the world around me and create new things from scratch when it came to painting , I had become the youngest painter to claim the top spot in the industry, amassing awards and accolades in my name. “I wish I could own one of your art works, but it will cost me an arm and two legs to purchase one. I am so jealous of how talented you are.” Paige cooed like a baby. I chuckled at her bubbly behavior. Paige was a human and my helper. “How can I help you this lovely morning?” I asked her as I wiped my tired face with the back of my hand. After staying up the entire night, my eyes were masked with eye bags and my feet needed a good massage. All I wanted was some ”me” time to rest. “Goodness! I almost forgot about it. The homeroom teacher at the kindergarten just called.” Her words were rushed as she informed me. I stopped what I was doing, my fatigue monetarily forgotten. “Don’t tell me Lauren and Laurent caused a new batch of trouble in the kindergarten again?” Lola gave me a nervous smile. “You should see for yourself. The school already sent them home.” I placed a hand on my forehead wearily. Those children would be the death of me. They had returned only after an hour? What had my little titans done this time? Three years ago, the moon goddess blessed me with twins, a son and a daughter, Lauren and Laurent. They were my bundle of joy, that made me complete and whole. With a two months belly, I left Canada and came to England with nothing but my suitcase and shattered dreams. But to raise them, providing them with a bright future, a privilege I did not always have, I began working and decided to pursue my dream of painting. During these years, I have been leaving among a large constituent of humans, with no ties to the werewolf world. I blended with ease with the population of humans and focused on raising my children. However, my children were werewolves, not just any breed of werewolves, they were offsprings of an alpha wolf which came with its own. Taking a deep breath, I left my painting room to find my children munching on pancakes at the dinning table. I watched them, my heart turning to mush just by watching them. “Mommy!” As soon as they saw me, they raced for me, hugging me by the legs. “Are you done with work? Finally, we can go get some ice cream.” They both said in unison. “Yes mommy is done with work and ready to go on an ice cream date with her little muffins.” I matched their energy, placing a kiss on their foreheads. “Yay!” Lauren exclaimed as she hugged me tightly on the neck as I lifted her up to nestle on my hips. “Mommy, you had also promised that if we behaved well at school with no complaints from our teachers, you would also take us to the movies right?” She reminded me excitedly. “I did make a promise to treat you two to a nice weekend if there were no complaints from your teachers. So tell me, what happened at kindergarten?” I looked at Laurent suspiciously specially, and Lauren crawled down my body and stood beside her brother, the two forming a united front. “We did nothing wrong, the sports teacher was being stupid.” My daughter blinks her big blue eyes which were an exact replica of mine while speaking. “Stupid?” Lauren explained the whole incident to me. “ Today some boys came to bully Laurent because he wanted to study and not participate in the sprint race. The gym teacher instead of scolding the boys, joined them to throw jabs at Laurent and also said some mean things about you as well. Laurent later agreed to the race on the condition that if he won, the gym teacher would apologize to him and you. In the end, he won, and the gym teacher instead of apologizing chose to resign.” I listened to Lauren’s explanation, with a mix of pride and concern. I had to change their school again for the fourth time in the span of five months. If this continued, I wondered how they would be able to socialize with their peers. “Are you angry with us mommy?” Laurent asked and bit his lips lightly as he looked like a cute bunny. “No mommy is not angry, she is instead very proud of you two for obeying her and not causing trouble at school.” I ruffled their hair and pulled them in for a hug. They giggled excitedly, their tiny figure, melding well into me. “I’ll find a new kindergarten for you two. Until then, let’s go get some ice cream.” I grinned trying to cheer them up. “Yay!” They both jumped up excitedly. “ I want chocolate and vanilla with wafer toppings.” Laurent said. He had forest green eyes just like Gustavo. He was like a mini version of Gustavo. “I want… strawberry ice cream!” Lauren chirped in her tiny voice. Thankfully she was my replica and inherited my blue eyes and long lashes. I could resist pulling them again for the nine hundredth and ninety ninth time for a hug. “Mommy is happy today, so you two can eat whatever you want.” Their excitement knew no bounds and they nodded eagerly. Just as we were preparing to leave, Paige came in and said. “Miss. Camille, someone is here to see you.” I turned to her slightly puzzled. I had no appointments for today and was not expecting anyone. “Who is it?” “It’s me.” A deep male voice echoed through the dining room, followed by footsteps. “Grandpa!” Lauren and Laurent exclaimed in unison and rushed over to Alpha Benjamin, the Alpha of the Rosewood pack. “I need your help Camille.” He said, “urgently.”
