Davina sat straight up in bed. Something was off. Something was wrong! Her skin burned. Was it fever? Did she have fever? She felt super anxious. Her stomach was in knots. Every hair on her body seemed to stand on end and the burning sensation only increased.
She stood up and pulled on her joggers and sneakers. Despite how hot she already was, she didn’t want to just walk around in underwear and a tee shirt just in case something was wrong. After all, if she passed out she didn’t want emergency personnel to see her like that. Her mind was so foggy and she was extremely disoriented. “I need to go find aunt Carly right now!” she thought.
She stumbled through the house until she found her aunt sitting quietly at the table sipping a glass of wine and watching one of her favorite television shows while writing something. “Aunt Carly would you see if I have a fever?” Davina said. Aunt Carly looked up and pushed her reading glasses up on her nose. “Come here young one.” Replied aunt Carly. Aunt Carly placed her hand on Davina’s forehead and smiled. “No, that’s no fever.” Said aunt Carly. Davina sat down and looked at her bewildered. Why was aunt Carly smiling like that?
Just then aunt Carly said, “I think what you need is a glass of water and some fresh air. Sometimes we just need to take a little walk to feel better again.” Davina wasn’t sure how a walk would help her but she replied, “Yes ma’am.” and proceeded to walk to the kitchen. Aunt Carly would never let her suffer if something was truly wrong, this much she was sure of. Maybe she was having a nightmare or overreacting about it all.. She poured herself a glass of water and gulped it down while looking out through the kitchen window.
Just then the feeling hit her again, but stronger this time. It nearly doubled her over. The burning increased and the water did little to soothe anything. Suddenly she got the extreme urge to be outside. She started walking towards the door in a daze. On her way to the door aunt Carly stopped her and said, “Be sure to stick to the path that is closest to Green River Pack territory. You will be safe there.” Davina walked out, forgetting to close the door behind her.
Aunt Carly watched her niece walk towards the path until she couldn’t see her anymore. “Finally, my little bird is learning to fly! She will return home a woman. Oh, to be young again. Those were the days.” aunt Carly said aloud to herself while reminiscing. Aunt Carly made sure to leave the door open, closing only the screen door. Davina made sure to walk on the path that bordered the Green River Pack. Every step she took became more and more of a struggle. “What is wrong with me???” she thought. Just then pain rippled up her spine and she heard a voice.
“I need you to try and listen to me now, can you hear me?” Davina froze. “Who’s there?” She called out nervously. The voice spoke again, “Davina, stop searching the woods. I am here with you. I am your wolf, Lexy.” Suddenly it registered in Davina’s mind what was happening. Davina smiled the brightest smile and exclaimed, “Finally! I have been waiting for you!!!” Lexy replied, “Likewise, I have been waiting for you also, Davina. We needed to wait for the right time and now it is upon us.
Tonight you will transform for the first time, and we will be one.” Davina felt the love her wolf had for her from deep within. “Lexy is a beautiful name.” Davina said. Another wave of pain hit Davina like a ton of bricks, this time bringing her to her knees. “We will surely become familiar with one another, but at this time I need you to do as I say. I am here to help you through this. The longer we wait the more it will hurt you.” What do I need to do?” Davina said. “You need to take off your clothes.” said Lexy.
“Wait what? Here?” said Devina. “Yes, because if you don’t, your clothes will be worthless tomorrow. I will shred them to pieces. If you like being naked though, that is something I have no objection to. Clothes are so restricting…” Davina cut her off, “OK, OK I’m taking them off now.” Davina placed her clothes in a neat folded pile on top of a fallen tree. “Now what?” said Davina. Lexy replied, “Brace yourself.” Before she knew what was happening, she felt like she had been struck in the back with a sledge hammer.
The burning increased under her skin simultaneously until she thought she couldn’t bare it any longer. Her skin felt like it was crawling. She writhed in pain. She felt a cold sensation in the back of her skull and her throat felt tight. Suddenly everything ceased and she laid still on the ground, afraid to move.
“Stand up.” her wolf commanded. She stood up, wobbly at first. When she looked down she saw two black paws. “I have paws! Davina exclaimed excitedly. “Oh you have so much more than that, Davina. Look around you. What do you see?” The dark of night suddenly didn’t seem so dark. She could see straight through the trees. “What do you smell? Can you hear it?” said Lexy. Davina lifted her head to sniff the air. “I smell the earth, and rain coming, and.. a squirrel?” Davina said while she listened intently. She could hear it’s little claws as it scurried to it’s nest. “The night is beautiful isn’t it? Now let’s have some real fun! Try to run!” said Lexy.
Davina took a few steps and then broke into a full run. The night air rushed through her beautiful onyx colored fur. She wasn’t sure how long she had ran. It felt like pure freedom. She was fast, darting through the trees like a shadow.
Rain started to fall as the sky opened up and released all that it had held back. Thunder rumbled in the background. It was blissful and the rain cooled her skin as if it was happy to have the company. She could hear the drops hitting the earth and the leaves in the trees, like a musical performance that was held just for her. Even the light wind carried all sorts of sounds and smells. Meanwhile, a few hundred meters away, an elite soldier on border patrol from the Green River Pack stopped in his tracks and crouched down slowly. He studied the dark shape in the distance, trying to see through the rain.
