The chaos in this hospital, if you can call it that...was never ending. A constant raging cycle of ever-lasting madness. Every new patient here seeming worst then the last.
But... no matter how bad it got, every rage fit, angry ravenous outburst, simply did not compare to the egotistical weight of the power hungry warden running this joint.
Warden Taika Aldous, even the thought of his name leaves me with a toxic taste in my mouth. The bloody beast is the worst bloke here, and he's in charge of it...isn't that just the frosting on the f*****g cake of life.
I stare mindlessly at the chains holding my wrists to the table, looped through a thick steel ring bolted into the center of its metal frame. My eyes drift casually to the cameras in the left and right corners of the small boxed room, knowing two matching eyes zoom and turn behind me. Four corners, four cameras.
Simple.
Security here was pretty tight, until Friday evenings. That's when it seemed to get a tad lazy is what I've collected my three long years here.
Guards tend to slack off a hint more, caring more about weekend plans, fine by me. These chains though, my thoughts drift back to my present situation and my frown manages to deepen. I lock my eyes on the camera perched on the upper right hand corner of the wall...inhaling dramatically.
...
" Come on Tai! come on, come on, come on! Let's get this over with, so I can get back to my cell please, there I said please...gotta count for somthing cooommee on!"
The words spilled forth from my lips like a rapid waterfall. Clicking my tongue in a 'tik-toc' fashion as the last word escapes my lips. In that moment, Taika burrowed in through the clear glass door slamming a heavy file down before me in a angry haste. His nostrils flaring on his wide bridged nose.
" Well, let's speed this along..."
I huff out, lifting my gaze to catch the anger seething in his hazel eyes, flecks of black, tangling upon the golden green hues made all the more amusingly obvious of the annoyance he had for me, for all the mad hatters here, but I seemed to be his favorite to agrovate. The feeling was mutual.
"...Joy! You're here, now let's move this along... I've been here three years. I still plead innocent. I didn't kill anyone..."
I heighten my tone to a near sqeak before I speak once again.
" Oh yes you did, We have evidence that says otherwise!"
I return my voice to its normal grit...
" Evidence of what?! " The words seething from my clentched teeth like scoldining lava...
"The word of a ex girlfriend that has it out for me...? That's all you have and that's all you'll ever get... all you had on me for three years so you can't hold m..."
I feel a heavy sting come around the left side of my face, causing my teeth to clack together. My vision blurs momentarily. I force myself to focused on the glossy sheen across the freshly polished concrete floor. I draw in a slow heaving breath, blinking a couple times before I exhale. Noticing a few fresh droplets of crimson have splattered upon the floor. Rising slowly, l press back deeply in the steel back of my chair locking my blurry dark eyes with Taikas. A wild uncontainable smile creeping across my bemused lips, screams whaling inside my head.
" ...Look, my DNA. Why don't you collect that, so you'll actually have a trace of "evidence." ...
and arrest yourself...for assault while you're at it...!"
"Do you ever shut up!"
Tai hisses out, heaving the folder up behind his shoulder once again, but before he can come down on me like a tantruming child, there's a small peck on the glass.
" S..Sir, times up s-sir. He needs to go b-back to hi-his c-cell s-sir."
Ah, saved by Kai.
I cast my blurry eyes towards the clear sheen separating us. I could make out the pity in Kais eyes...
How ill at ease this brutality made him feel, at times I wondered why he ever wanted to become a officer. Still...
I jerk my attention back to Tai, as I hear the overly irritated clearing of a dry throat.
Almost got caught using unnecessary force didn't you Tai...
My thoughts stir madly in my cranium, pondering over each possible blind spot this place contained. I still wasn't fully certain where they all lied.
" ... Very well..."
Was all Tai managed to spit out before cramming the file beneath his arm and striding forward like a man on fire. His tan over coat blows like a small wave behind him, adding to his dramatic exit.
What a poor excuse for a warden that man is...always in a rush. Without the mind to listen, what good could he do? Without the willingness to listen there is no truth. Course...it's not like people like him bothered to dig too deep for the truth anyhow.
Kais eyes board into the back of the wardens head a brief moment. He then shuffled swiftly on his feet as if he was catching up to his own thoughts, straightening up quickly. He made his way oven to me holding his key up hurriedly unlocking my wrists from the steel top table. He held up a new pair of steel silver cuffs apologetically. Kai was soft, a soft soul...
Don't know why he ended up here.
I rubbed my wrists a mere moment shrugging as I stood, turning to face the wall, knowing the drill all too well now....
I felt the chill of the icey rings clasping my warm aching flesh, clicking around my wrists. My eyes widening as I realize
how loosely they dangle on me. My mind begins to stir with every step we took, as Kai guided me back to my cell. Oh, the possibilities.
My thoughts drift continuously to every camera in every corner of these mad halls.
Every possible eye watching, on which day. I knew every police officers face in this joint. Knew who was good, bad, whom faces I wouldn't mind leaving unrecognizable.
I snap back to reality as I hear the familiar cry of my cell door being heaved aside. I step inside with a heaving sigh, but never a fuss. What would be the point? Besides, Kai was a kind guy anyhow. I wouldn't wish to give him grief when he never given me any reason to.
The last three years these four walls have been my home. I glance from the thin, worn cot...to the stainless steel sink, to the steel bowl beside it... These walls had my basic needs... I suppose... bed, tiolet, sink... but I missed so much... longed for so much more.
" Your mattress is looking abit th-thin...may help if you f-flip it..."
I raised my eyebrow quickly, mulling over his sudden vocalization... it was certainly out of character for him. He was a man of few words... though maybe...this would count as a few.
...what are you hinting at?
"I'll be b-back with your dinner shortly Ranji."
I cast my eyes over to study his features...
Watching as his eyes gestured over to the thin, poor excuse for a mattress ever so vaguely as he closed me in my clear glass box of a cell. I appreciate that though, how he would call me by my name instead of " Sicko " like all the others...
I was just Ranji...a simple gesture, but it almost made me feel human again. I shrug ignoring all my puzzled thoughts and lift the mattress...
My dark eyes widen in disbelief....
" Holy shit..."
I glance around discretely, to be certain there is no soul in sight, silence surrounded me, and all 'eyes' where not in my direction. I curl my fingers around the thin white box... questions spilling forth inside my mind like hot lava out of a volcano.
Kai, what did you do. Flopping back on my cot it creaks in dismay under my frame. Shoving my head deeply into the thin cotton fibers of my pillow. I popped open the box...and a phone, ear buds, and a small, tightly folded piece of paper fell against my chest. I jerked upwards and the items slipped downwards into my lap...
I couldn't believe my eyes, it's been so long since I've even seen a phone or made a call... The possibilities stirred up in my cranium once again chewing on my brain like starving wolves. The eagerness that quaked inside me now...
The taste of freedom never felt so close... Then I recall the paper, folded into a neat pristine triangle resting on my thigh. Ah, yes.
I pluck it up, unfolding with a careful fingers slowly revealing the quickly jotted down message inside.
' Ranji,
I'm giving you these things because I believe in your innocence.
So see what's happening in the world outside these walls. Please let me know when the phone dies and I'll charge it for you....
- Kai
p.s. flush the note, please.'
Even when he writes he's polite as all hell. Jumping up I toss the note into the metal tiolet bowl and flush swiftly, staring intently making certain the note washes down the pipe with ease. Smiling to myself...I pop in one ear bud so I can still listen to my surroundings
watching with antipation as the phone hums to life...
Oh, thankyou tender mercy on my sanity...
With trembling fingers I scroll over the apps until I find a social media app, logging into a old account I havnt gotten to use in years. I scrolled anxiously down until I see somthing that catches my eye. The frame was a young women in classic white clown make up, pink and purple lips, with a dramatically painted smile that lead from the edges of her mouth upwards and spiraled around in several loops to her cheeks, her nose was purple with what looked like rainbow sprinkles placed with in the hue. Her eyes where a rich walnut, lashes painted purple, the matching pink and purple shades circled those beautiful orbs of hers... a hot pink leather silver spiked collar rest around her neck...
My breath caught in my throat as I studied her further, the delicate side swoop of her hair, how the front gently looped like a crescent moon beneath her right eye. Do I dare hit play on this video....
...My thumb trembled over the arrow, until finally I hit the button and the image comes to life.
" Hello, Hello! My little sweets! "
The women's voice chimed, causing my heart to flutter...somthing I long forgotten the sensation. My breath caught in utter awe of her... The way she moved about with such confidence, in this moment... I didn't feel like I was in prision. Ifelt I was with-in the video with her...to be by her side ...what bliss.
" Come see me, Sugar Rush and the rest of the Hell Rails family in Houston Texas on March 20th! 8pm sharp!"
As the word 'sharp' passed those lovely painted lips of hers, she brings a black toothed blade to her sweet lips, kissing the side of the knife, causing the still damp makeup to leave a stained impression on the steel...
I envy that knife....
March 20th huh. The date latched onto my brain like a leech. I glance to the date the video was posted... only a hour ago....
The date on my phone shown Febuary 20th. A month. I have one month to escape this hell hole. Freedom had a face to me now, freedom had a name...and her name is Sugar Rush.
...
I jerk awake with a shuddering jolt. Images dance there way around my fluttering eye lids. I hate when I dream about that s**t show of a prison.
Drawing in a few deep breaths, pressing the back of my hand against my forehead feeling the beads of sweat that have formed from my nagging nightmares...silently hoping to dock soon. It's beem four long days on this vessel. I manged to stay low and quiet. I was hungry, thirsty, and exhausted... but I knew it couldn't be much longer now. If on cue I hear three blaring whistles from the boat. I've made it... I'm in Texas....
