Chapter 8
Nick was one deck up from where Benning had caught Todd, close to where their stateroom was located. “Damn jerk, it’s just stupid letting him get you,” he muttered. He moved along the deck, staying close to the railing so he could hear what was going on. No matter how hard he strained to get the words, Nick only heard voices, not the individual words.
Todd was being snarky, and Benning was trying to sound dangerous. That was not a good combination in Nick’s opinion. When Todd copped that sort of attitude, he was either in trouble or about to beat on someone. From the way Benning’s voice sounded, Nick was betting the former.
The situation did not assuage Nick’s fears for Todd’s safety. What it really did was piss Nick off at Todd for being so reckless.
