O’Grady/Agent Johnston POV
“When do I get to talk to my parents?” Chancey finally asked after a couple of hours of driving. She missed both of her parents deeply. She hadn’t quite understood why her daddy and Unka Mack showed up. She had a couple of bad days, first with daddy being taken away then what happened with her babysitter and now this.
“I will let you know when it is safe to contact them.” O’Grady was on cloud nine the whole drive. I can’t believe that he was able to deceive not only Xavier but Sierra and the rest of the cops as well! What an incredible feeling to have been right under their noses! I also knew that I couldn’t get too cocky either so I forced that feeling down so that I was more levelheaded. I had actually forgotten that I had a prisoner so I was a little startled when she spoke.
“Why are you smiling?” She asked with a hint of suspicion in her voice.
I just looked at her but said nothing, I didn’t owe her an explanation, after all she is a prisoner. Chancey rolled her eyes and looked out the window. I watched her wince in pain but she wasn’t touched. Chancey’s mind was slammed with all these voices and they were all yelling in her mind. Chancey was quickly getting a migraine when she subconsciously honed onto one particular voice. She couldn’t completely understand what the voice was saying, but the voice just kept rambling about deceiving people. There was something about the voice, it sounded eerily familiar.
“Are you hungry? We can go to a drive-thru.” I offered her, unaware what was happening to Chancey.
She froze, everything just clicked. The voice she was hearing now was the same voice that she heard in her mind. She realized that she might be in danger. “Yeah, sure, I’m starving. What do you have in mind?”
“Well, that depends on what you’re in the mood for. Cheeseburgers, Mexican, Italian, Thai?” I said as I looked at her, he body looked tensed up. “Are you alright?”
Chancey looked at me. I saw panic flash then her features relaxed. She appeared calm on the exterior. “I would like cheeseburgers.”
I kept eyeballing her. “Okay, cheeseburgers it is.”
She smiled. “Thanks, do you mind if I take a quick nap?”
I nodded. “Sure, I’ll wake you up when I get your food.” I watched her with suspicions in my eyes.
Chancey spent the rest of the way pretending to sleep. She kept wishing that her parents were with her and she was safe with them.
I knew that there was something different about Chancey, I just didn’t know what it was. I shrugged that annoyance off as not important. I took advantage of the silence while it lasted. I would have to put her somewhere while I called her parents. I pulled into a drive-thru and ordered 2 cheeseburgers, fries and sodas. I then drove to a park so that we could eat. I shook her shoulder. “Here you go Chancey, eat up.”
She thanked me and nibbled on her food. It was silent for a moment before she broke the silence. “Are you going to kill me?”
I had just taken a bite of my cheeseburger when she had asked me that question. I was a bit startled so I ended up choking on my food. I looked at her then . “Why would you ask that?”
She put her food down and looked me in the eye. “It’s just a feeling that I have.” She continued to stare at me. “You never answered my question.”
I decided to tell her the truth, she deserved that much at least. “That depends on what you parents have to say.” I pulled out of the parking lot and drove to a hotel for the night.
