Chapter 28

816 Words
Detective Mack POV I seemed to be floating above my own body at the hospital. I had no idea what was happening, the last thing I remembered was the car accident. I hadn’t felt any pain so I didn’t think that my injuries were that bad. I couldn’t’ believe that this was the way his life would end. I didn’t tell my lovely wife just how much he loved her. I regretted not telling Madison that he loved her each and every day. I would never be able to see his partner or his adorable niece. I had so many regrets, he was too young to die. I floated into the ER waiting room and was shocked to see Cheryl, Madison, Sierra and Xavier. Chief Lewis was even there, how weird. He would give anything to be able to hold his family in his arms again, to tell them that he loved them. He missed them so much. I felt electricity in the air around me, there were zapping sounds. I didn’t want to leave them but I was being drawn back to the room where my body lay. I couldn’t fight it, I tried my hardest to look upon my family at least once more before I left this world. Before I knew what was happening, I was being pulled back into my body. I settled back into my lifeless body. The electricity was powerful now he felt every nerve coming alive. The nurses were using the paddles and with every jolt his heart began to beat. Slowly he felt alive, it wasn’t long before his heart started beating on its own accord. He felt his lungs inflate and deflate with every breath he took. His brain slowly woke up. He could hear the buzz of movement. He began to cry when he heard a familiar voice. “Mack, honey, can you hear me? It’s me, Cheryl, I’ve brought Madison. I have missed you so very much.” Cheryl was openly weeping at this point. I was able to hear her but he still couldn’t open his eyes, I must have been sedated. I couldn’t wait to see her again. After she didn’t answer her phone I thought that she was still mad at me. He never thought that he would see her again. Before he drifted off to sleep he heard a couple more voices, nor he recognized. I couldn’t make out what they were saying but I had a feeling that they weren’t friendly people. I feared that they were the ones who had done this to him. I didn’t like feeling vulnerable and I was very, very vulnerable in my present condition. I prayed that someone showed up to chase these people away. Since I was stuck here I turned my hearing into what they were saying. “How did he not die in the crash or by the beating he endured? I thought you were good at this?!” There was a growl then another voice. “Don’t f*****g test me! I didn’t see you lifting a finger to help! Iceman isn’t going to like this one bit! We can’t dispatch of him here, there are too many witnesses and police monitoring the halls.” I felt a sense of relief that at least I was safe in this hospital. I would still feel better if Sierra or Xavier was here. The was a knock on the door that interrupted the voices. I was hoping that it was one of my fellow officers. “Damn, we need to leave!” there was silence that followed before the door opened. “Hello detective, my name is Dr. Michael Torez. You had us all worried but now that you are out of danger we are only going to keep you for observation for now. I know that you can’t reply but I’m hoping that by taking to you it will help with your recovery.” I heard him walking around the room. “This window should not be open, I’ll close it for you so that you stay warm and recover quickly. You, detective, have quite a few people waiting patiently, or impatiently in your partners case, for you to wake up and be back to yourself.” There was a silence as the doctor continued his work. “Well, everything looks good so I will get out of your hair and a nurse will check up on you in an hour.” I then heard him open the room door then exit the room. There was silence then a creaking of a door opening and shutting. “This is one loose end that we will not be able to take care of. We need to leave before we are caught.” I could only listen and not warn anyone as I heard them leave my hospital room. I f*****g hated feeling useless!
